The only line I may question is "not doing it for the fame."

I think most bands want to become famous at one point - or at every point in their career.

I think so too. I think the difference is that some bands don't know what to expect and then when they finally get it they are overwhelmed by it, while some other bands embrace it and enjoy it.
I think its a matter of personalities and what they believe in, nobody can really know what fame feels like until they are there.
I can only imagine, what it must feel like to go from a nobody to someone that everyone wants to meet, everyone wants your picture, your autograph, everyone wants to know where you live, what you do, what you eat, who you date, etc... I think there are people that are not prepared for that kind of attention.
So I guess what Im trying to say is that many bands might have wanted to become famous in the sense of having people listen to the music and buy your records, but not so happy about the invasion or privacy, and the stalker fans that fame can bring with it, people are sometimes harsh when judging celebrities, because they don't want their life intruded upon but they don't really stop for moment and think what its like, now that I have children I can see how horrible it must be to have people trying to find out stuff about your children and looking to snap a picture of them so that they can post it all over the internet.

In no way is it possible for Pearl Jam to make a new album that would really stand the test of time. They are, and always will be a product of the nineties. I mean look at it seriously: they haven't made a true classic rock song since 90s. If you ask anyone out there on the streets, they won't know anything post Jeremy.

This band has had its heyday and general public has forgotten about Pearl Jam already. That's the fact. They are not The Who of the modern age or any other band. But I won't say they don't make decent songs, yes they do, but everything reflects to their past. They are a band from the past and will always be remembered as a grunge band from the 90s.

I always hoped that they would progress like REM has. I guess the best albums by REM were made after they had been together for over 10 years. That didn't happen with PJ.

BUT I still like the band, I most likely won't by the new album but will go to see them if they play live somewhere near me. And I already had the greatest time with this band when they were at their peak: 1994-1996. ;)

well if thats the way you feel ... Will you switch 10c #s with me ?

I agree with you - while not being the biggest green day fan by any means...

When I was 13/14 back in 95/96 - while I had always been on the PJ boat - green day spoke to my generation back then - there wasn't a person in my school that didn't own dookie.

    Fast forward 15 years:

I have a friend who's younger brother is around 15/16 - he doesn't know anyone who doesn't own american idiot or the new album in some form. I asked if he felt green day spoke to his generation - he said of course.

so green day is still speaking for the same generation 15 years later - i find that amazing in some sense. in another i find it as a lack of having your fans grow with you.

that's something to think about when comparing apples to oranges here

and that speaks volumes bout a band in there 40's who all have kids and are married. I'm sure there are many fans of green day who have been along the whole ride just like pj fans have. not every person at a green day concert is either 15 or 16.

I know what your saying - but for a band like green day to constantly keep drawing in new 13-18 year olds is actually fascinating. Obviously PJ brings in younger fans as well each year, but not at the same volume, and I'd expect the elder green day fans to not be in the masses as PJ fans...

    but i could be wrong

they're also about 10 years younger than the members of pearl jam.

so? what does that have to do with anything? Pearl Jam spoke to the masses of the same age group at one point. Then a few years after PJ did it, Green Day did. Fast forward 15 years...Green Day still is speaking to the masses of that same age group. Age of a band clearly has no factor - I don't know what your point is?

    Eddie Vedder is turning 45
Billy Joe Armstrong will be turning 38.

PS: I am NO WAY stating that PJ is outdated. I just jumped in this conversation when I saw metsy talk about green day. I just find it odd that Green Day still reaches that same age group time and time again....irrelevant to whatever else was talked about on here.

    Anything post Jeremy, let's see:

    Daughter
    Better Man
    DTE

Pearl Jam isn't about the man on the street.

Like TV shows musical taste changes when the media wants it to change.

Us in the PJ community are happy they haven't been the success like U2 (REM is a horrible example).

They are a great live band, with a clear message, and a band that loves it's fans because the fans love them.

So take Ten and play it over and over then head off to a Journey show. Us real fans will soak up the beauty that is pearl jam.

Anyone else notice their join dates? Holy Shanizzle...coincidence? Or just 10C's default if you joined prior to a certain date?

geez, guy, relax. i was just pointing out that they are a bit younger and perhaps that has something to do with it. they also didnt turn their backs on the mass media for a solid 10 years at the height of their popularity like pj did. perhaps that played a pretty huge part of it as well.

Hehe - didn't realize that I came across a little harsh haha. I'd say the whole media outlet has something to do with it, but maybe let's take away the age factor and add in the merchandise available everywhere factor.
