Pearl Jam is outdated...just take a closer look

This band has had its heyday and general public has forgotten about Pearl Jam already. That's the fact. They are not The Who of the modern age or any other band. But I won't say they don't make decent songs, yes they do, but everything reflects to their past. They are a band from the past and will always be remembered as a grunge band from the 90s.

I always hoped that they would progress like REM has. I guess the best albums by REM were made after they had been together for over 10 years. That didn't happen with PJ.

BUT I still like the band, I most likely won't by the new album but will go to see them if they play live somewhere near me. And I already had the greatest time with this band when they were at their peak: 1994-1996.

Indeed. The general public does not know many songs. I think the general public more or less understands that Pearl Jam is a live concert attraction.

By the way, this is all good, isn't it? Pearl Jam flies below the radar. Why do we want our band to compete for attention with pop stars, or commercially driven bands, or god forbid hip-hop? Pearl Jam is outside that realm, its on the fringe of Pop culture, it doesn't have to compete with that crap. PJ is its own entity and scene. The Greatful Dead did this for 30 years and sold out every concert, and I think they were a bit more outdated than our beloved band.

So, is there something wrong with this? Obviously, we as fans think of PJ as being relevant to today, and I believe the rock press does as well. This is not a band that basks in the spotlight, nor do we want it to be . . .

P.S. If the media gave more attention to PJ, would it make you feel better? and P.P.S. After the 1st ten years, REM sucked.

I might be wrong, and please correct me if I am, but weren't 1994-1996 trying times for Pearl Jam? You had the suicide of Cobain, the fight with Ticketmaster, they almost breaking up, Ed getting sick and having Neil Young take over in June 1995 up at Golden Gate Park, the whole canceling of the 1995 tour because of Ticketmaster, etc. Even though I stuck by the band, I was happy they got over that hump. So, for that reason(s), 94-96 weren't their best years. I think these last few years have been their best years. Backspacer will prove that.

has anyone suggested that perhaps the OP is outdated?

I was with the band since the first time I heard Jeremy on the radio, and I still think their music is amazing. They are the only band I give a crap about live - I have tons of bootlegs and live albums and never get tired of them.

Well I think the thing is though that everybody knows who Pearl Jam is though. They are like Metallica and U2 in that the public know their sound in a conscious way if not their new songs.

As for new fans I was at my first festival with Pearl Jam a few weeks ago and while I will admit there was many older fans, I also saw many young teenage fans wearing T-Shirts and singing songs. I think they are the heir apparent in the rock scene without a doubt.

Sorry for keeping this thread alive, but not having ESPN (or the other sports shows) here in the UK I was wondering what other bands tend to get played?

Also, have PJ ever covered anything current at their shows, I think the only thing that comes close to my admittedly limited knowledge is the recording of an 80s tune on a Strokes b-side?

Would people freak out if they were to collaborate with a Hip Hop artist (Rap/R&B being what the kids are into last time I looked)? There was that Cypress Hill track way back...

I played those albums a million times back when they were released. I didn't miss anything. They just don't hold as well with me, although they do have a few of my favorite songs. To be honest with you, I haven't listened to anything before Avocado in years.. besides the Ten rerelease. I usually listen to the new album to death, the current boots for a few years and then move on. Looking back '94 to '96 is probably my least favorite period.

Before you say I'm missing a lot, I'm willing to wager I've listened to Vitalogy and No Code more than you. I stood in line to get Vitalogy on release day.. well I actually couldn't call off for high school, so I had my mom do it. Same with No Code. lol :P

I believe you are huge fan, like everyone who post here.

However, I do believe you are missing something by passing up No Code and Vitalogy.

I was recently at a party with another PJ head and I expressed my displeasure with hearing Corduroy live. He told me to give the album another try for it was his favorite.

I did and now listen to it regularly and love Corduroy. Not for You, Tremor Christ, Satan' Bed, Immortality all gems.

No Code is border line my favorite album. The drums are what really bring this one alive for.

But I never passed them up. At one point, No Code was my favorite album. In My Tree is still my favorite song. I never missed anything. I'm just saying that with my state of mind now, I prefer the newer stuff.

Drums definitly. Driving flatout outback with that up full bore is second to none.
It was actually Yield that I thought was a bit "Hollier than thou", not 'No Code'. It was YIELD that I had to force myself to listen to. I waited and waited and when it finaly came out.......I thought they had gone on the biggest "Find myself, Spriritual guided, "I'm going to do a Cat Stevens" and forget I'm HUMAN, type trip." but hey, it grew on me.
