I think there alot more younger fans then people think, there are plenty of teenagers like me who love pearl jam, I don't really think Green Day has more younger fans because they are an old band too and they have older fans, Seems like Pearl Jam sorta speaks to all generations with the diversity of ages of their fans.
geez, guy, relax. i was just pointing out that they are a bit younger and perhaps that has something to do with it. they also didnt turn their backs on the mass media for a solid 10 years at the height of their popularity like pj did. perhaps that played a pretty huge part of it as well.
Hehe - didn't realize that I came across a little harsh haha. I'd say the whole media outlet has something to do with it, but maybe let's take away the age factor and add in the merchandise available everywhere factor.
its cool. honestly, if pj didnt pull away at the height of their popularity, they'd be fucking u2 right now. i like u2, but i'm glad they chose this path
Can't say i'm a fan of U2 either...but you're right on that point
and also - metsy - I actually bought Insomniac - never owned dookie - it was just everywhere that I didn't have to, I also never owned Nevermind. I'm PROUD to have never owned Nevermind.
To the OP I dont agree with your view but fair enough, can I ask how you can to this opion as I am interestd in how you came to this conclusion. As to the others who cares what the masses think of PJ, I know I love them and to me that is all that maters. I can not wait for the new album.
As for their best album I would have to go with vitolagy, as this is the first album I listened to from start to end. Loved it from the moment I first heard last exit. I know i might have known songs like alive, jeremy,go,daughter, etc before this but my love of PJ did not begin to vitolagy.
As for greenday I think they suck and I dont like them, not sure why as I love the song warning and time of you life. But I dont like none of their other work.

Absolutely Right: Pearl Jam is outdated! But I don't really want to see Eddie & Stone appear on stage tryin' to make their Radiohead kind of thing and go all Electro on us with Computers (don't get me wrong I love Radiohead!) I just don't see them "evolve" like certain other bands do and have an ambient techno influenced phase!?
Guess sometimes I love outdated stuff and Pearl Jam is my favourite outdated band then ...
If you ask anyone out there on the streets, they won't know anything post Jeremy.
They are not The Who of the modern age or any other band.
Just to clear this up, your post is nonsense... if you ask Joe Public to name some Who songs they won't be able to tell you anything other than My Generation and "that one off CSI".
My dad grew up with the Who and has a greatest hits and that, I took him to see Pearl Jam and he didn't know The Real Me or Love Reign O'er Me. Do you really think people hum Squeeze Box and Magic Bus as they walk down the street? The Who are great because they did what they wanted and didn't whore themselves to success and Pearl Jam are the same.
Kind of missing the larger point. Rock music is outdated. Its a pale shadow of itself, somewhat of a joke in mainstream culture.
Yet people who were fans of rock music when it was still badass, still go to see their favorite classic rock artists in droves, allowing them to sell out arenas/tours.
When I see what modern rock has become, I understand why rock lost its edge. It's like modern artists lost the sould of rock n' roll. Watered down, pro tooled, heartless, crap.
It's no wonder its bands like pearl jam, metallica, u2, acdc that sell out arenas, and have the biggest grossing tours.
Pearl Jam went into hiding on purpose years ago, stopped making music videos, limited press, etc... They got that they wanted. A loyal fanbase without all the bs.
I don't think pearl jam itself is outdate, but rock music has gone passe. I think this is why pearl jam sells out shows. Because if you want to go to a real rock concert, or listen to real rock music, you have to go into the past
O.K., can anyone tell me a band thats been around for 18 years that is not "outdated"?? Why the hell would a 15 year old jump on a band of 40 yr olds. We wouldn't have. The fact that we still listen and go to the live shows is more a testiment to us, than the band!! During the "hayday"(94-96), I could buy front row tix for 500 bucks. Aside from the lucky ones, try buying those tix now for under 3000. Paul Mcartney, Paul Frigan Mcaartney just played two shows in Boston.. at Fenway Park!!! Couldn't sell out. Has he stood the test of time?? Maybe he's just another washed up Beatle... Ha Ha!! We all know the difference between perception and reality right?? Well the perception on the "streets" is that PJ is not relevant anymore. Fair statement, I guess. THE REALITY IS, PJ WALKS INTO ANY TOWN IN THE WORLD TO PLAY A SHOW, AND STEPS UP LIKE NO OTHER BAND TODAY.....
have a wonderful Labor Day, drink the frosty bevs!!!

I must be pshyic then cause I heard some stuff before then.
I got 20'odd year old nephews and Nieces who ROCK OUT with Aunty Jo and her Old Fashioned Music.
4 of them are coming to the show!
Show me a band that has such captivating and socially-questioning lyrics, with the ability to make you breakdown into tears with 20,000 other people, with members that want to do what they love and know but never wanted the fame, that still has the ability to dish out amazing live shows, that actually care about and respect their fan-base... Then maybe I could back them as well but I have yet to find one that could have as big of an impact on my life.
You gonna make me cry here! (because its all so true)

green day are not outdated by any means. they are still making music that matters and are still doing it there way.
I agree with you - while not being the biggest green day fan by any means...
When I was 13/14 back in 95/96 - while I had always been on the PJ boat - green day spoke to my generation back then - there wasn't a person in my school that didn't own dookie.
Fast forward 15 years:
I have a friend who's younger brother is around 15/16 - he doesn't know anyone who doesn't own american idiot or the new album in some form. I asked if he felt green day spoke to his generation - he said of course.
so green day is still speaking for the same generation 15 years later - i find that amazing in some sense. in another i find it as a lack of having your fans grow with you.
that's something to think about when comparing apples to oranges here
Now this thread really took a life on its own Ok, maybe I had one two many beers when posting and was a bit too one-eyed BUT at least I raised some discussion. The above written quote deals with exactly what I'm thinking. I guess somehow Green Day really re-invented themselves with "American Idiot". That is fantastic album and they were able to touch the masses again with great songwriting and new sound.
That is what I always hoped Pearl Jam would do. Progress.
Maybe I'm just sad that they make the same songs again and again. Sometimes literally (Rival - 1/2 full, WWS - The Fixer, Speed Of Sound - Thumbing My Way) and sometimes they just sound SO Pearl Jam. I guess somehow they got to the point where they really didn't try at all to be anything more than just what they'd always been. Riot Act was a huge dissapointment as well as S/T.
BUT actually (after 10 years of waiting this to happen again with PJ) I'm a bit excited about "Amongst The Waves". That clip sounds SO great.
And to each and everyone who started insulting me on a personal level: shame on you. Get a life.

I'm confused. A band puts out a album that sounds and feels a little different than their previous work, and they have "reinvented themselves."
Another band puts out an album that sounds and feels a little different than their previous work, and get little but grief from all but the diehards (until years later, when many people give the release from years back another go, and find they like it). And if this same band does this routinely, challenge the paradigm, mature and share that maturation through their music, how is that not progress?
One thing about Green Day is that the meaning behind their songs is accessible. There is little to no depth, no thought required. Which is fine! They are punk-inspired rock. The world does not need Billie Joe Armstrong's leadership.
the OP is exactly right. PJ isn't the modern era The Who. They are to the 90's what Whitesnake and Poison were to the 80's. Ask anybody born after 1985 or so, they probably don't even know PJ as well as they know poison. If only Ed would get a reality show like Bret Michaels.
I would say Pearl Jam is just a TAD ahead of Whitesnake and Poison on the count that they still tour and release albums.
This is the worst one, comparing PJ to Whitesnake and Poison.
When's the lat time Neil Young or Bruce joined these 2 bands on stage?
I must say I got into slayer with their god hates us all album, which was an awesome album. Which I think if i have the dates right they would have been arround for about 18 years when I first discovered them. Going to see the live in october with megadeath, which will be an awesome lineup.
How can you compare the sound of PJ to that of cock rock bands like poison who had a shelf live of a couple of years?
Anyone ever listen to early pantera? They started as a glam rock band in the 80's before they changed frontman and become the an awesome heavy metal band, producing great albums such as cowboys from hell and vulgar display of power.
Why has rock lost its edge? Is it because the new and up and coming bands of today are more geared towards making money then actualy making music?

In no way is it possible for Pearl Jam to make a new album that would really stand the test of time. They are, and always will be a product of the nineties. I mean look at it seriously: they haven't made a true classic rock song since 90s. If you ask anyone out there on the streets, they won't know anything post Jeremy.
This band has had its heyday and general public has forgotten about Pearl Jam already. That's the fact. They are not The Who of the modern age or any other band. But I won't say they don't make decent songs, yes they do, but everything reflects to their past. They are a band from the past and will always be remembered as a grunge band from the 90s.
I always hoped that they would progress like REM has. I guess the best albums by REM were made after they had been together for over 10 years. That didn't happen with PJ.
BUT I still like the band, I most likely won't by the new album but will go to see them if they play live somewhere near me. And I already had the greatest time with this band when they were at their peak: 1994-1996.
seriously R.E.M.'s around the sun and up were garbage! I LOVE R.E.M. but Riot Act which was released after 10 years was a really great album. I'm fine with PJ being outdated as are the who, neil young and the beatles. EVERY band from the 1990's are ourtdated to a point. Go and listen to something that isn't 'outdated' in your eyes are leave PJ alone. I'm fine with PJ not being cool and not being as popular as they used to be. From what I have heard from Backsapcer it's going to be sensational.

Good points. And has everyone forgotten that music still is a very corporate BIZ that wants SO badly to sell you something? Bands like Green Day still play what is generally the flavor of the target audience...pop/punk (though I don't mean to lump them in with so much crap that is mass-produced today). The music labels want to market their "product" to a target audience, which the current flavor of pop/punk does. Pearl Jam consists of guys a little older than their target audience/market who don't project the marketability that a band like Green Day can. I think they probably confuse the shit out of marketing guys and quite frankly, the band doesn't need to pander to being marketable. And that's fine. Pearl Jam doesn't need to worry about all that. They've earned the following and credibility. They can make the music they want to make without worrying keeping up with or setting new trends. With their loyal following and strings of sellouts, how can you argue with their success? I'm by no means saying Green Day has sold out, but merely that their music style is more mainstream and in tune with the "target audience". Pearl Jam is just happy to make great music and if they gain new fans...great. Their relevance to the flavors of the day makes no difference.
then could we compare the wiggles to greenday as they both target a specific audience and dont evolve or grow
