Not trying to make generalizations, but from my perspective there just seem to be more male rock music fans in general.
If this is true, which is what a lot of people are saying, does anyone have an opinion or idea as to why this might be the case?
Going back to relating it to the women in math & sciences thing, there are a lot of theories as to why this is the case, mostly cultural, some claims that women and men think with different parts of the brain, etc. I would be extremely interested to hear the cultural reasons women might be the minority of rock fans.

I'd guess that it may have somethin to do with boys being less mature and holding onto their "childish" hobbies longer, and into adulthood, where it just becomes part of the "daily grind".

How can holding onto something that moves you be a bad thing? Or childish?

go to a Bon Jovi concert. lots of 30/40 year old women there. i think it's more about the individual band than the entire genre of rock n roll
haha I love how the women here are getting all defensive
most girls dont go to concerts alone
"thats not true i go alone!"
most girls arent fans of rock music
"thats not true me and my friends love rock!"
well duh, of course theres exceptions to every rule, you wouldnt be here if you didnt love rock music and pearl jam. But think about it this way: whats the ratio of men to women on this message board? 10 to 1?
Guys are much more simpler than girls, especially when it comes to music. You ask white guys (and 99% of pj fans are white, except for dennis rodman haha) what kinda music they like, and the vast majority are gonna say rock. You ask girls that same question and i guarantee you'll get a much broader answer (r&b, dance, pop, rock, etc)
How many girls you see going alone to sporting events? or girls going together to sporting events? Not many, simply because theres far more guys into sports than girls, similar to rock music (but probably to a lesser extent with the rock music)
And most girls are not gonna go to any kind of concert or major event by themselves, theres no denying that. My gf loves music but had been to like 2 concerts before we met (blink 182), since we've been together we've seen pj a couple times, bruce a couple times, black crowes, foo fighters, etc. She'd never think to go to a concert alone (like most girls), whereas i drove 4 hours to reading pa to see pj solo on the vote for change tour. Who knows whether its a safety thing or a "needy" thing, but its definitely the truth.
I am just stating what i know from what I like and what my friends like. I have many female friends who don't think twice about going to concerts alone if they want to. I just really don't like these comments like "Who knows whether its a safety thing or a "needy" thing, but its definitely the truth ." Maybe those are the type of women you know but not me.

Thats true, im sure most of those 80s hair bands get alot more chicks at their shows than pearl jam or any of the other 90s alternative bands. Its gotta be becuase those 80s bands were all about the hair and the sex appeal and looking good and it appealed more to women?? That sounds very shallow but i cant think of another reason, it cant be because the music is better! Lets see, would I rather hear Unskinny Bop or Present Tense, tough choice haha

But it is the truth because thats how this thread got started.....when you go to a concert or sporting event how many girls do you see there alone? Yes you go alone....yes some of your friends go alone...yes the women on here go alone cuz they are hardcore pearl jam fans.....but you are in the VAST minority of females who go to concerts alone. If you dont believe me just look around next time your at a pj concert and see how many girls are there alone, the # will be tiny

I totally disagree with that! I skipped the 80s all together. Went straight from classic rock to PJ and The Black Crowes in 1990.
To this day I don't listen to any from then...well, GnR was about the only, and Bon Jovi makes me want to gouge my eyes and hears out.
Thank God for local bands in the 80's...I had friends in The Rugburns. lol!

So of this 10% female population, how many would you consider physically attractive? I would like to see someone answer that honestly.
1) why on earth would this matter and/or be interesting
2) why don't we ask what percentage of the male fan base are "physically attractive"?
1) It's great message board fodder. Guys can be pug fugly and play the guitar and/or sing (or maybe it's just the rich and famous part) and that is enough. Girls have to be attractive to make up for their lack of taste in music. However Pearl Jam liking girls have great taste in music so they don't necessarily have to be attractive. I guess the question is really then, how many girls are at the PJ show only because they wanted to go shopping in Chicago (or New York or LA or Toronto or Thunder Bay).
2) We have already established that it doesn't matter if males are physically attractive -- as long as they can play guitar, they can get girls.

Ahh, I've noticed something in your post, Mister 'Pink:' You go on and on about how wimpy girls are. I did not bother to count the number of times you used the term girls. But twice, you used the word women. "The women here are getting all defensive." What's the ratio of men to women on this board?"
Girls are female children. Of course they are afraid to be alone. Perhaps if you had women in your life instead of girls, you would not find much to complain about. I'm over 18, I prefer the company of adults.

Travisthesky, excellent point about girls vs. women! I actually think Mr. Pink would be statistically wrong in his claim that women go places alone less than men. I've read that women are more comfortable going to places alone because they are more comfortable talking to people they don't know, and this seems to fit my personal observations. When I have traveled to PJ shows and met other fans, I have definitely noticed that the women are much more out going than the men and willing to chat with strangers, even so much as saying to the person next to you, "hey, this show is gonna be awesome!"
The vast majority of women I know are extremely independent. Most aren't rock fans, no, but the going places alone explanation as to why women aren't at PJ shows really isn't making sense to me. Most women I know have traveled all over the world alone at some point. Most men I know wouldn't go to movies or restaurants alone, but most women I know would. Most single women I know live alone, while most single men I know live with roommates.
I think the women who are rock fans are going to be quite used to going places alone. When I was in high school and college, I relied on male friends to go to shows with. After I graduated from college, it seemed I didn't have many male friends around, and none of my female friends liked rock music. I started going to a lot of shows with my brother, but at that time he was still too young to go to a lot of shows, and he didn't always want to go to the same shows as me. I quickly learned that if I was ever going to see bands I liked, I was going to have to go alone. I have to say, while it can be kind of boring at times, like between sets and stuff, it's really fun to show up at a show maybe without a ticket, and just have no one else to worry about. Once I got used to going to shows alone, a lot of other stuff followed. Now I pretty much do whatever I want, whenever I want, and rarely ever even think of asking other people to come!
with respect to the men having simpler taste in music than women...I find this an interesting take, but I think you're just rephrasing the idea that women like crap music. I think the answer is something cultural that happens around puberty- but I don't know what it is. It seems that people form their lasting musical tastes somewhere around junior high, and there's something that determines how much you care about music that happens around that time too.
My current theory is as follows (I've been thinking about this all day): As for tastes, maybe since girls mature faster than boys, they get into popular music at a younger age (when you think about it, little boys are rarely interested in pop music, but girls often are). But because they are still young the music available and/or that appeals to them is poppy stuff. Some women, like myself, cut their teeth on this stuff but then move on...but something must happen to the others.
And that might be the cultural aspect - what makes people really care about something like popular music. If you think back to music and high school- especially for those of us who were teenagers in the 80s and 90s- it really plays a huge role in giving you an identity. Half the people in my high school were identified based on what kind of music they listened to. Maybe girls have more options of things to base their identities on at this age, so rock music falls to the back burner.
The other thing that can't be ignored is the lack of female role models in rock music. Most of the most influential bands in history are all male. I think in the 90s there was an influx of female rock musicians, but they were never that huge and that trend seems to have faded pretty quickly. Less girls become fans because there's less for them to relate to, and it becomes a cycle.
In my opinion, many women are turned off by some rock bands because the music and the culture can have misogynist undertones. How can women relate to something that excludes them? Yes, there are many amazing female musicians, but there really is no female equivalent to a band like Pearl Jam. So, unless a real powerhouse group of female musicians come along, women who happen to like rock music will look to bands like Pearl Jam whose members have a feminist outlook--feminist as in "men and women are equal."
I agree with an earlier poster who pointed out that a man can be average by all accounts, but once he straps on a guitar and plays it well, his hotness factor goes through the roof. If a woman is average-looking and straps on a guitar and plays it well, she is still just an average-looking woman playing a guitar. What's with that?
As one of the 5% of women die-hard fans, I've met some of the coolest women at PJ and EV shows. I'd almost rather go with a girlfriend who's really into them, or just meet up with people there, than go with my husband, just because things can get very interesting when you're flying solo, wandering aimlessly threw a crowd and being free. And although I've gone solo to some shows that weren't PJ shows, it certainly wouldn't stop me if I had to go solo to PJ. You always meet up with like-minded great people on the same wave-length. It's one of the great reasons I'm addicted to seeing live music in the first place.
