If you need additional information or if you would like to sign up for the outing please post below or drop me a PM.

I have never asked the Tech Team but perhaps we can make this a sticky for he next month. If anyone thinks its worthly and knows how to go about doing that please see what you can do.

Thank You.

*********
Recently I was diagnosed with endstage renal failure.
( As a result of 38 years with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus )
I am going for dialysis 3 times / week.
I never realized the impact that a transplant could have in someones life, that is, until now .
I am on the list(s) for a kidney.

If I could make this golf outing, I would do it.
I know there are alot of benovolent Pitters near / from the great state of NJ who might like to enjoy this golf outting. Please help me and this cause by keeping this thread towards the top.

I just went through all of this with my Mom. Both of her kidneys failed and they're still not really sure why, besides her high blood pressure which she's had her whole life. She went to dialysis 3 times a week also, at 4 hours a visit.

In April, on just a normal night, my phone rang at 9pm from an unknown number. Thinking it had something to do with work I didn't answer it. About five minutes went by and my sister called all frantic, telling me that she had just got a call and that they had a kidney for my Mom, but we had to have her at Tulane hospital in two hours. For us that's at least an hour drive by itself, so we really didn't have much time to get everything ready, go pick her up, and then get down to New Orleans.

We made it though, and the next morning at 7am they did the transplant. So far it has gone perfect, no signs of rejection or anything. She's still got a ways to go, and will be on medicine for the rest of her life, but that's a small price to pay for how much she was blessed.

The main point of my story is just how quick the transplant happened. That was one of the last calls I ever expected to get, especially on a random Wednesday night. It just proves that you've got to keep up hope, and just keep gunning toward the future.

Good luck with everything, I know it was a nightmare for my whole family for three long years, but it can get better.

thanks so much for all the kind words / thoughts / prayers.

evenflow- all the best to your mom and her new kidney.
i have heard many stories regarding transplants,
phonecalls and the neccessary short abrupt and sudden trips.
In fact when i first contacted the first "area " center in my area
    ( * http://nyptransplant.org/ )
they told me i would need a cell phone, without a doubt.
Somehow i have managed to go 42 years without one of these,
but be it as it may i have recently made the plunge
into the 21st century with one of these new gadgets reminiscent of a Star Trek episode.
( i am learning to utilize my new LG enV3 with slow progress)

I hope to receive a similiar phonecall very soon with a match.

The reality is that sometimes 2 or 3 or even 4 people are called for the very same kidney,
and in those cases unfortunately 1 or 2 or even 3 people are going to go home very disappointed and without that kidney .

One of the biggest bitches of this sickness is to try to get a handle on your emotions.
They are tested everyday, in many phases of life.
This is the part i'm probably having the hardest time with.

I had to pull out suddenly of the 2 chicago PJ concerts,
guess I will have to settle for all 4 in Phillytown.

See you all in Philly !

What a great cause Bathgate. So sorry to hear of your condition and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

I am a regular blood donor, an organ donor at death and am also on the list for bone marrow donation. Those of us who are healthy have the ability to help those less forturnate than us every day. You can donate blood, which goes to accident victims, cancer victims, etc. - every 56 days. There is nothing like the feeling of knowing you helped save a life today.

I enourage you all to consider becoming blood and/or organ donors. I consider it an honor to donate knowing I've helped numerous strangers over the span of my life. It makes me a better person and a contributing member of society, and it's such an easy thing to do.

Please consider becoming a donor today.

Oh, and I look forward to meeting you in Philly Bathgate.

    Bump.

    Don't be selfish.

Please encourage others to donate as well.

I know a gal who has Cystic Fibrosis and is on her third set of lungs.

Yes, you read that correctly. THIRD.

The first was her own. The next two are from kindly donors.

She was not expected to live very long at all, but is now in her 36th year.

She has dedicated her life to patient advocacy and travels to give lectures and seminars about her experiences in dealing with the medical infrastructure we have in the States.

If anyone is interested this is her website: http://www.sickgirlspeaks.com/

    Tiffany absolutely rocks!

God Bless Tiffany. This is even more near and dear to my heart as I have a niece and nephew with Cystic Fibrosis and having learned so much about it since their diagnosis - knowing that they may one day need transplants, makes the issue of organ donation even more poignant.

    thanks for the website info.

Yeah they actually told my sister that when she talked to them on the phone. They called three people for two kidneys, so someone went home disappointed. It really really sucks for that person but lucky for us my Mom was one of the three that recieved one that night. I don't know how they make the decision as to who's going to recieve the organ and who doesn't. It's got to be a sucky job deciding that, and even worse to be the one who delivers the result to the person not chosen.

saw this last night in the news and had to drag it in here,....
this is from the more fucked up side of things in this situation:
of course, its illegal to trasfer monies and or gifts for any organ transplants,
they prefer us to donate our organs for sick people that need them,....

    Buying a Kidney ?

    Long Island Man Denies
    Buying Kidney
Updated: Wednesday, 19 Aug 2009, 11:00 PM EDT
    Published : Wednesday, 19 Aug 2009, 10:50 PM EDT

    MYFOX NEW YORK STAFF
MYFOXNY.COM - An Israeli man's online video has sparked controversy raised questions about a kidney transplant that took place in New York.

Nick Rosen, of Tel Aviv, claims he was paid $20,000 to give his kidney to a Long Island businessman. The video chronicles Rosen's journey from Israel to the Unites States for the transplant.

In the video, Rosen said he has already spent all the money for the 2005 transplant. He said the money was left for him in an envelope when he woke up in the hospital after the operation.

Brad Gursky, of Woodbury, said he owes his life to Rosen. He said he forgives Rosen for claiming that he participated in what would be an illegal organ purchase.

"I have to give the man a pass on the video," Gursky said. "He saved my life."

Gursky says that he didn't give Rosen one cent, but also acknowledged that Rosen might have been paid by someone else -- someone connected to the production of Rosen's 11-minute video.

Mount Sinai, the hospital that performed the transplant, issued this statement: "Mount Sinai's transplant screening process is rigorous and comprehensive, and assesses each donor's motivation. All donors are clearly advised that it is against the law to receive money or gifts for being an organ donor. Organs from deceased donors are equally subjected to high scrutiny. The pretransplant evaluation may not detect premeditated and skillful attempts to subvert and defraud the evaluation process."

This just blows my mind. The fact that there's even a law that states that an individual can't sell their organs is such a double standard. Even for families of deceased people whose organs go to someone else should be entitled to receive some compensation if both parties agree to it. Because here's the really f'd up part - those organs that are being "donated" by someone isn't free. The recipient pays for the organ, and it isn't cheap. But who gets the money you ask? There are actually people whose job it is to harvest the organs from a body and then decide what hospital or doctor gets to receive it. So both the harvester and the doctor decide the price of the organ and how much each will make from it (this doesn't include the doctors fee for performing the operation - that's a totally separate, and totally outrageous fee).

If the person (or their surviving family members) whose organ is getting donated isn't legally allowed to be compensated monetarily then how is it even feasible that anyone else is entitled to getting paid for it? The whole situation gives me a big 'ol case of the redass!

    i can understand the bewilderment.
unfortuantely, i believe much of this has to fall under the general headliner of " US Healthcare " .
I am lucky enough to have a very very good insurance, ( they pick up all of my medical expenses and any medicine that may be needed ) but we all know the dire cicumstances facing many US residents who are either out of work or out of health insurance or even worse out of both.
This is a hot topic lately, wheather or not Obama fumbled ( or is fumbling ) the ball or not ,
we will have to see what comes of the issue in the next few months , after the Congress and the House all re- convene in Washington after summer holidays .

The third annual "Transplants Save Lives" golf outing is taking place on Wednesday September 16th at the River Vale Country Club, in River Vale New Jersey. A shot gun start will be at 1:00pm The cost for the outing is $180 and includes Golf; Cart; Dinner; unlimited Beer and Soda for the first hour. The Cost is $50 for Dinner Only. There are also many Raffles and other Prizes.

My best friend Rick is running this outing as he has for the past two years. This is a great cause and many of the transplant donors will be on hand at the outing and dinner. It was pretty amazing last year when a 23 year old man attended the outing only 3 weeks after getting a heart transplant. And there are many other stories like his.

The River Vale Country Club is a very nice course and the outing is a foursome scramble. You can sign up as a single or foursome or anything in between.

This is a great cause to highten the awareness of Organ Donors and Organ Transplants. You can find more information about this organization at http://www.transplantssavelives.com/

If you need additional information or if you would like to sign up for the outing please post below or drop me a PM.

I have never asked the Tech Team but perhaps we can make this a sticky for he next month. If anyone thinks its worthly and knows how to go about doing that please see what you can do.

    Thank You

I'm very sorry to hear what you are going through. Good luck, I'm cheering for you over here behind my computer.

I not able to give blood (previous heart condition.) However, I am an organ donor upon death. My oldest sister even said to me something along the lines:

If I ever needed an organ I would want one of yours because you don't do anything.

See, see, living a prudish, puritan lifestyle does have it's advantages.
