While major sporting events are kinda cool, I don't see why tax money should pay for flyovers for random festivals (regardless of their "theme").

why? feels good to give gifts and bring a little happiness to someone.
It doesn't feel good in January when the bills come rolling around--for you or the other people who felt pressured into giving you something when you gave them something. We're not economically advantaged. We bring happiness to one another by actually spending the stuff that counts on one another--time. You can't buy it in any store, even if you wanted to. Our older relatives beg us not to buy them anything more--you can't buy them anything they can use. They have everything they need. We more or less do, too. But, the older folks beg us for our time. "Come by and visit me! That's the best thing you can give me," they say. And, you know, they're right. Having lost my parents, I can honestly say that I never regret not having bought them this or that as a gift for any occasion, but I do regret that I can't sit down with them any more. I think priorities change as you get older...when my kids were little, I can't imagine not giving gifts...it was part of the holiday magic. The holiday magic has changed, now that they're adults, to the things I do with them during the holidays--making goodies, watching movies, decorating. The only gift its about is time. A lot of families of, essentially, adults don't give gifts. They spend the money they would have spent on gifts on family time together, like a cheap cruise where they spend a few days talking and making memories, the only gifts that really keep on giving.
