I love it when the military gets applauded for "protecting our freedom" even though we invade the country they are fighting in

not to knock the military...it's just the nationalism that drives me nuts

why are you having such a hard time understanding what I'm saying?

why do I need to partake in your little experiment when there are MANY people who do not stand, sing along, or stay for the god bless america song? and nothing ever happens to these people despite your claims and obvious self proclaimed fear that you need to go along and stand up anyway. have some balls, if you want to sit in protest when this song is sung, do it. NOTHING is going to happen to you.

What a crock of shit IMO...

I have no problem with this...

While major sporting events are kinda cool, I don't see why tax money should pay for flyovers for random festivals (regardless of their "theme").

Yeah... I don't get the "God Bless America" during the 7th inning stretch either... what does it have to do with baseball anyway?

nothing. what does the national anthem have to do with baseball? nothing. its just a gesture to have a little American pride/patriotism during our national pastime.

and for some very strange reason people are upset with this.

I'm not upset with it, I just don't see the point in it. The national anthem is different, It's been used to start just about every sporting event for decades, but God Bless America was added by MLB after 9/11.

I'm for getting rid of Christmas for myself as a shopping excess excuse. In fact, in our family we've done so.

why? feels good to give gifts and bring a little happiness to someone.

It doesn't feel good in January when the bills come rolling around--for you or the other people who felt pressured into giving you something when you gave them something. We're not economically advantaged. We bring happiness to one another by actually spending the stuff that counts on one another--time. You can't buy it in any store, even if you wanted to. Our older relatives beg us not to buy them anything more--you can't buy them anything they can use. They have everything they need. We more or less do, too. But, the older folks beg us for our time. "Come by and visit me! That's the best thing you can give me," they say. And, you know, they're right. Having lost my parents, I can honestly say that I never regret not having bought them this or that as a gift for any occasion, but I do regret that I can't sit down with them any more. I think priorities change as you get older...when my kids were little, I can't imagine not giving gifts...it was part of the holiday magic. The holiday magic has changed, now that they're adults, to the things I do with them during the holidays--making goodies, watching movies, decorating. The only gift its about is time. A lot of families of, essentially, adults don't give gifts. They spend the money they would have spent on gifts on family time together, like a cheap cruise where they spend a few days talking and making memories, the only gifts that really keep on giving.

    It's a weird interjection

:? Americas National pastime Americas National Anthem. OMG how weird
  • jlew24asujlew24asu Posts: 10,118

Not upset, just bored by it. It's a weird interjection. It's equally strange that you think it is so awful of us to wonder why we bother playing it in the first place.

why is it strange? again, it is a baseball game. America's pastime. I dont see anything weird or wrong about it being sung during the 7th inning stretch. there is no penalty for ignoring it, sitting down, leaving, etc.

for me, I could give two shits. why should I care? I'm not forced to watch state run TV everyday. I'm not forced to hang a picture of Obama in my house, or keep a flag outside my home. I'm sorry, but I do not see how some silly little song, playing at a baseball game, is anything to get upset over or even talked about.

the point is that its just another small gesture to throw in some national pride at our national pastime, baseball.

ok so? what is your issue with it?

I've already said why I wish they'd stop. It's a waste of time, I want the game to be moving, the song sucks, it's a strange change in mood in the middle of the game... so I wonder why they do it. Why does this bother you so much? They may not be great reasons, but they're legit reasons to think it's a pointless waste of time, and you have yet to give any reason why you think they should do it. You just keep acting like we're all irrational for wishing they'd stop. I hate it when people pay with checks at the grocery store too, it's a waste of time and why can't they use credit or cash like everyone else? If you could give two shits about this, why have you made 15-20 posts in here telling us we're wrong to be bothered by it... clearly our thoughts on its necessity (or lack thereof) bothers you.

The point is they have been doing it for over 40 years and then they just stop. And sure is funny how Obama sits in Rev. Wrights church for over 20 years but on national prayer day he didn't attend any church.

its not a waste of time. it happens between innings and doesnt slow down the game one bit. at MOST a few mins. you make it sound like they stop the game and play a 40 minute tribute to America on the big screen

but I'm glad you admit that are not great reasons. they aren't at all. its fucking asinine to think this actually bothers someone.

and I meant I could give two shits if they play the song or not.

 it happens between innings! and believe it or not, there may be some Americans who actually enjoy taking a moment to sing a patriotic song.

What about all those people who would rather have gone to the movies? They might be offended by this. Furthermore, the whole "one, two, three, strikes you're out" thing might really piss off those who prefer football. Or the folks from out of town who don't want to "root, root, root for the home team"... Be careful.

why sing anything? what's the fascination with singing any song? why not just watch the fucking sport.

i know that its played by men in pyjamas... you've not really sold it to me though... for 8 innings nothing happens and during one innings people sing a patriotic song?!... sounds like Nuremberg 1937 to me. ;)

I left out the part where armed military henchmen walk up and down the aisles and club people over the head who are brave enough not to sing along.

Yes, you being bothered by me being annoyed is endlessly more rational than me being annoyed in the first place.
