I've never been to a festival/outdoor type concert. What does it take to get somewhere near the stage? Getting there early? Pushing your way up? Both? I'm big and tall so that's not an issue but my wife isn't as sturdy if that makes any sense.
You're set.....use your wife as a battering ram. No one will get rough with her for pushing thru....when people give you dirty looks for barging by, give them a little 'sorry shrug' and make it look like she's dragging you to the front....you will go thru a little slam dance pit....don't worry...these people are always total pussies with no interest in the music, and their timing is off.....wait for a lull in the song and plow thru.....now you're into the large mass of people that are trying awkwardly not to feel like they're humping each other as they jump up and down with their privates touching......this is when you learn to use your elbows. you may want to take the lead from your wife at this point. get your elbow between the two people in front of you...then a kneee.....use them like pry bars, in opposite directions...when a space opens up, slip in there, pulling your wife behind you...watch for crowd surfers!!! easiest way to deal is to just duck and let those around you deal with them ...if you're too tall for this option, make sure your wife is protected, then give the surfer a good push to get him off of you...and a kidney shot for crowd surfing in the first place....now......
you're almost at the front....keep using the elbow/knee can opener move up to the front row. when it's in reach, grab the rail....nothing can stop you now....put your elbow between a fairly equal sized-guys shoulderblades until they submit and give up their front row spot......then give it to your wife. Grab the rail on either side of her; this stops anyone from using yoru elbow tactic against her, and should keep crowdsurfers from crashing down on her head (beware: they will all be crashing down on YOUR head once you get this close)... she will also cushion you from the crushing masses behind you. with any luck, you will have enough strength to keep her from bein squished, and you will see right over her head...ie: you both have front row. if anyone uses this plan against you, those elbows work well in self-defense too
edit: also, be prepared to be completely SOAKED in the sweat of strangers...it's sick. Don't make any plans for after the show if you plan to be at the front.
disclaimer: many PJ fans have outgrown 'the pit'; this is why there is so much hate for festival shows.....fuck 'em. have fun, be kind but competitive, ALWAYS pick up anyone who falls, protect women and children, don't take any shit...typical pit rules apply
stb: can we protect your wrist long enough for you to become my cushion? How tall are you? :P

I prefer to tell people I fell off of a cowboy
If I get the rail, I will be your cushion There is no place like being on the rail.
I hate people who dig their elbows into your back and don't know what the hell they're doing. I went to NIN in Vancouver about 4 years ago, and some prick kept jamming is elbow into my back.. when I got home my gf discovered some pretty dark bruises (the worst I think I've ever had coming out of a mosh pit), that was the last show I ever went into the pit at, decided I got to old.
For all you rookies out there, use for frakking forearms when you're trying to keep your distance from the person in front of you, trying to squeeze between people. The forearm is a fairly flat surface and is alot less painful to the people around you I had concert noobs that use their elbows in your nerve clusters.. frak.
LOL great reply Drowned Out, thanks for that. It seems that the battle to get up close would detract from the concert experience, but I suppose that depends on the person and how bad you want to be that close to the band.
Hey drowned-out, Nice post. I guess I'm one of those fans who have outgrown the pit, also with the short wife to boot (fuck me). But hey, I've been there done that,..now I'm hoping that the nice slope at COP will provide an amphitheater affect so we can lay down our blanket and enjoy the sweet tunes.

there's a slope? I have no idea what the venue looks like?
I'm curious aboot the setup as well..has there ever been a show there before, or has a plan been announced?
best pic I could find... http://www.viewcalgary.com/panorama/xBVinNW38.jpg
No matter where the stage goes...I'm sure we'll get some smartass Eddie comments about it. Has PJ ever played in front of a ski jump? A bobsled run?
and frak....the reason for using your elbows in the pit is that people don't like it! If you're my size and you're not giving up your spot....;) nah...I only do that to people that are being total dicks....the shin-scraper, foot-stomper types...there was a time that I loved the whole pit experience...now it annoys me to no end...and the sweat thing really does gross me out lol...Maybe it does detract from the musical enjoyment a bit....but what the hell? ..it makes it a more intense experience, usually everyone up there is rockin out and singin along....AND you get to actually WATCH the band play...it's pretty cool to watch a great musician do their thing...even if you're getting kicked in the head every few minutes
stb - teamwork! I'll yell at people to be careful of your wrist, maybe it will give us an advantage ah, stampede...I have to get down there for it again one of these years...sounds like I'll have to bust out my chaps n stetson if'n I do cowboys? c'mon!
edit:....hmmmm I just checked the site, looks like he'll be at the Ontario festival...not seeing anything about Calgary . Thanks for gettin my hopes up B  :P

There is a slope, see link to get perspective from the parking lot. This probably looks a little more severe than it actually is when you get back there, there is much more gentle sloping space back there. I predict the stage to look up the hill, with people at the back getting the benefit of the slope. But I could be totally wrong,.. I guess we'll see.

Any one got any idea what time they'll hit the stage? Im thinkin like 9. I got a wedding which I am obligated to go to in K country, but Ive got an out now so I should be able to make the show the ceremony is at 4:30 so I should be able to make it to COP at 7:30 ish. Think I'd be missing anything??

Apparently they are supposed to be done by 10pm,... so I'm hoping they are on a8pm, latest
i think that expecting them to play for 2 hours isn't realistic, more like 1-1.5 hours, it's going to be great, check out mother mother they are good too

1 hour would be huge dissappointment,... I think they'll stretch the rules
Pearl Jam will get upwards of two hours. Both of last year's headliners did, and they're nowhere near the same pedigree; I'd be shocked if Pearl Jam was on any later than 8pm.
Oh--and for people who are parking, try doing some reconaissance beforehand and check out Cougar Ridge. It's right behind the venue and, as far as I can tell, there's walking paths leading right to it. I don't know if we'll be able to get in through the back door, but it's certainly worth a shot!
