Thank you for everything Matt, drummer of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Pearl Jam, and of course, KISS. It's been an honor to listen to all your music and see you live 20 times.

I'll echo others that Pearl Jam may not have always been the best palate for Matt's art, but I believe that Dark Matter was the Pearl Jam/Matt Cameron masterpiece. And oh what an honor to see every song from the album played in the 7 DM Tour shows that I saw! If you're gonna go out, you might as well go out on top. And MFC sure as fuck all went out on top!

As for Pearl Jam, we have to have some expectations that this band is going to change as the gents get older. I don't know who will become the new drummer (there is no "replacing" Matt Cameron folks). Maybe it will take 2 people to do it. I would expect someone younger to come in and perform these incredible hours long athletic feats.

The best way to see every song from a particular album, is of course, the year or two after it gets released.

Unless you're just extremely lucky and hit up two particular shows in 2014 and three more particular shows in 2016. That's five shows for approximately half their catalog at the time.
Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"

Matt said in an interview that he would reach the point of physical exhaustion, look down and see that there were like 7-8 songs left in the set. I'm sure he said something about not wanting to play that long. Doing that 2-4 times per week has to take it's toll. Granted, this was back 10-15 years ago so they were all younger. But still.

Stone has said in a recent interview that nobody wants 3 hour shows. I assume he must've been talking about band members, because I'm sure fans would still be all for it. Except my wife. She would routinely ask "how many more songs?" during some of those marathon shows back in the day.

2:20-2:30 is not bad at all. Could probably squeeze another 2-3 songs in without all the chatter. But I know Ed needs to catch his breath every now and then lol

I think Eddie still likes a marathon show.  But who doesn't want to keep the party going when the second bottle of vino gets corked!

The 23-25 song shows are better anyway. Ed's voice holds up and they're tighter. Some of those 35+ song shows are "epic" but not great quality IMO. The bootlegs are borderline unlistenable.

No one can replace Matt. His power, speed and knowledge are impeccable. It will be a different pearl jam sound with a new drummer just like when Jack Irons played with PJ. When Matt joined, PJ was able to do 30-35 songs a night because of his power and speed. That's 27 years of knowledge gone.

That is just not true. There are a few sloppy ones (Penn State), but overall they were great. They kept playing. Longer than most of us could stand for.

How would you like to be 60+ with millions in the bank? Time to stop working perhaps? Go sit on a beach.

Maybe with every other job other than “Drummer for Pearl Jam”. That job offers enough down time where I could still try out all the beaches.

    Whole lot of assumptions there

Agreed. The percentage of "borderline unlistenable" shows is miniscule.  I've read a few times how sloppy those longer shows were and I'm just not seeing/hearing it.

I can't say I have looked for slop but I don't recall much of it. They definitely pushed songs through at insane tempos sometimes but that doesn't always mean sloppy.

I kind of got the feeling that they were focusing on quality since they reduced set times a few years back. Songs are played at recorded tempo and we get more repeats night to night.

I can’t believe news of Matt’s departure never leaked.
There was no chatter on here, or anywhere, that I saw. Not suggesting I’m the most diligent consumer of PJ info, but lots of people love to share rumors before they’re officially announced, and there wasn’t a peep

I wonder if the gap after tour to announcement was for Matt to confirm he really did want to leave and not change his mind.

But equally, I can see how tour dates leak if contacts at venues pass on rumours much harder in a small close knit group like the band deciding something major

Someone said in one of these threads that there were rumors in Nashville that someone in the band was leaving but that person never put much thought into it as it seemed quite unbelievable at that point.

That was this month... IIRC, I think someone might have said as much in the forum DURING the tour, but I can't recall which thread... or maybe I'm just imagining it.

Having experienced broken ribs, I can vouch for this.

After listening to Dark Matter, a lot of the lyrics are about fractured relationships, breaking up and wonder if they are about Matt? Wreckage, Scared of Fear, Setting Sun, upper hand, got to give. Makes sense if Matt made the decision before they started recording DM.

Agree. They could bring someone in but it would never be the same.
