6 former Mississippi law officers to be sentenced for torture of 2 Black men

Two Black men who were tortured by six Mississippi law enforcement officers called on a federal judge Monday to impose the harshest possible penalties against the disgraced former lawmen. (19 March 2024)

    Updated 10:00 AM EDT, March 19, 2024

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Six former Mississippi law enforcement officers who pleaded guilty to a long list of state and federal charges for torturing two Black men will be sentenced by a federal judge starting Tuesday.

U.S. District Judge Tom Lee will sentence two defendants each day on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday after twice delaying the proceedings. Each faces the potential of decades behind bars.

The former law officers admitted in August to subjecting Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker to numerous acts of racially motivated, violent torture. In a January 2023 episode, the group of six burst into a Rankin County home without a warrant and assaulted Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Parker with stun guns, a sex toy and other objects.

The terror began on Jan. 24, 2023, with a racist call for extrajudicial violence.

A white person phoned Rankin County Deputy Brett McAlpin and complained that two Black men were staying with a white woman at a house in Braxton, Mississippi. McAlpin told Deputy Christian Dedmon, who texted a group of white deputies so willing to use excessive force they called themselves “The Goon Squad.”

Once inside, they handcuffed Jenkins and his friend Eddie Terrell Parker and poured milk, alcohol and chocolate syrup over their faces. They forced them to strip naked and shower together to conceal the mess. They mocked the victims with racial slurs and shocked them with stun guns.

This is like the 6th article I've see about Miss cops now in the past few years.  Not just run of the mill stuff but full blown lunacy.

Why did more than 1,000 people die after police subdued them with force that isn't meant to kill?
By REESE DUNKLIN, RYAN J. FOLEY, JEFF MARTIN, JENNIFER McDERMOTT, HOLBROOK MOHR and JOHN SEEWER
    Today

Carl Grant, a Vietnam veteran with dementia, wandered out of a hospital room to charge a cellphone he imagined he had. When he wouldn’t sit still, the police officer escorting Grant body-slammed him, ricocheting the patient’s head off the floor.

Taylor Ware, a former Marine and aspiring college student, walked the grassy grounds of an interstate rest stop trying to shake the voices in his head. After Ware ran from an officer, he was attacked by a police dog, jolted by a stun gun, pinned on the ground and injected with a sedative.

And Donald Ivy Jr., a former three-sport athlete, left an ATM alone one night when officers sized him up as suspicious and tried to detain him. Ivy took off, and police tackled and shocked him with a stun gun, belted him with batons and held him facedown.

Each man was unarmed. Each was not a threat to public safety. And despite that, each died after police used a kind of force that is not supposed to be deadly — and can be much easier to hide than the blast of an officer’s gun.

Every day, police rely on common tactics that, unlike guns, are meant to stop people without killing them, such as physical holds, Tasers and body blows. But when misused, these tactics can still end in death — as happened with George Floyd in 2020, sparking a national reckoning over policing. And while that encounter was caught on video, capturing Floyd’s last words of “I can’t breathe,” many others throughout the United States have escaped notice.

Over a decade, more than 1,000 people died after police subdued them through means not intended to be lethal, an investigation led by The Associated Press found. In hundreds of cases, officers weren’t taught or didn’t follow best safety practices for physical force and weapons, creating a recipe for death.

These sorts of deadly encounters happened just about everywhere, according to an analysis of a database AP created. Big cities, suburbs and rural America. Red states and blue states. Restaurants, assisted-living centers and, most commonly, in or near the homes of those who died. The deceased came from all walks of life — a poet, a nurse, a saxophone player in a mariachi band, a truck driver, a sales director, a rodeo clown and even a few off-duty law enforcement officers.

Surely, Linda, you don't really believe Democrats do not care about the loss of a police officer?  I am very sorry to hear about this loss of life of one who served his community, but to imply that as a whole, Democrats don't care about something like this is reaching a new low.  I would strongly reconsidering your unnecessary disparagement.
Excuse me, but when you heap unjust criticism like that, my reaction is, "Thoughts and prayers" my ass.

when your side has a majority in the house and refuses to try to solve any problem, guns, police violence, etc, thoughts and prayers is all you can offer.

I surely do Brian, for the most part….and definitely believe the many rotten brains on here don’t care who shit of the police often, and never thank them for the heroic things they do day in and day out that never get reported.
I would strongly reconsider mocking someone who gives thoughts and prayers to an Officer who lost his life protecting such an ungrateful public.

when law enforcement in general are held to the same standards as the general public, I think most anywhere would hold a different view than they seem to hold now. Further , those elements in law enforcement who literally get away with murder, damage the reputation of the whole. And are protected by those worthy of more respect than the shit heels allow for them.

you have issue with the seeming  lack of respect? take it up with the abusers within law enforcement.

Well some people actually have a life and activity participate in it.  Not to find some sort of purpose or acceptance in a Rock bands forum.  I check in maybe once or twice a week for a laugh, but have noticed over the years how pathetic and sad some people’s lives really are by how much time they waste on here by commenting on every topic all day long.. Perhaps I will just sum it up that misery loves company, I guess that’s why I will never get it…

You pay to be a member of this community that you attack with every chance you get. If that’s not pathetic, I don’t know what is. You bring nothing but vitriol to this forum.

"definitely believe the many rotten brains on here don’t care who shit of the police"
That's simply not true and, besides, is a gross generalization.  It is true that many of us here have a great disrespect for bad cops, but if you read through the following thread, you will see your generalization about law enforcement officers is grossly off base and uncalled for:
    https://community.pearljam.com/discussion/233853/good-cop-thread

As for "thoughts and prayers", I'm not mocking you.  I'm just not impressed by those words when they are couched within statements that are utterly false and uncalled for, so I call bullshit.
But look, I'm not going to argue with you any more.  I'm also done with coming to your defense as I have done in the past.  It's plain to see what your motives are here.  Besides which, all talking about each other instead of the topic will do is get the thread locked.  We would do well to revisited this sticky thread:

And bringing the “reality.” In 2021, way more cops were killed in the South (44) and Midwest states (12) by those rotten brains in those rotten brain infested towns and cities of the red states, while the Northeast states had zero and the western states had one more than the midwestern states (13). Gotta love the alternative reality of the island life. Mahalo.

    Oops.
