US buying 3M barrels of oil to start replenishing reserves
    By MATTHEW DALY
    16 Dec 2022

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration said Friday it is buying 3 million barrels of oil to begin to replenish U.S. strategic reserves that officials drained earlier this year in a bid to stop gasoline prices from rising amid production cuts by OPEC and a ban on Russian oil imports.

President Joe Biden withdrew 180 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve starting in March, bringing the stockpile to its lowest level since the 1980s. The purchase, to begin in January, will start to replenish the reserve and is likely to be followed by additional purchases, officials said.

The Energy Department called the purchase "a good deal for American taxpayers'' since the price will be lower than the $96 per barrel average the U.S. oil was sold for. The replenishment also will strengthen U.S. energy security, the department said in a statement.

The purchase price was not announced, but benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil was selling at $74.50 per barrel late Friday.

Gasoline prices, meanwhile, averaged about $3.18 per gallon on Friday, down from $3.74 a month ago and just over $5 per gallon at their peak in June, according to the AAA auto club.

Tapping the reserve is among the few things a president can do by himself to try to control the inflation that makes Americans poorer and often creates a political liability for the party in control of the White House.

Global oil prices were rising even before Russia invaded Ukraine last February. When Biden announced a ban on Russian oil imports in early March, he acknowledged it would come at a cost to American consumers.

The administration completed the release of 180 million barrels in October. The reserve now contains roughly 400 million barrels of oil, down from more than 600 million in late 2021, according to the Energy Department.

The reserve was created after the 1970s Arab oil embargo to give the United States a supply that could be used in an emergency.

Contracts for the purchase will be awarded by Jan. 13, with deliveries to an SPR site in Texas expected in February.

Damn you Brandon! Now, hurry up and turn these into NFTs! Christmas is coming you know! Even though it’s canceled.

I wish he wouldn't use gas prices and inflation as something to brag about because I think many agreed he has almost zero control over those things, but yet no one is criticizing him for listing it as some sort of accomplishment. Can't have it both ways.
    It's a hopeless situation...

Brandon has been roundly criticized for gas prices and inflation though. It’s the repub mantra. And he did those things a POTUS can do, releasing oil from the strategic reserve, for example, which, again, he was roundly criticized for.

Damn Brandon, might as well toot your horn now because you’ll be testifying and impeached for Hunter’s laptop soon enough!

The US made $4 billion selling oil this year on Biden's SPR releases

The US government has pocketed almost $4 billion from selling oil this year, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In a bid to lower gas prices, President Joe Biden authorized releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in March.

Since then, the US has sold 180 million barrels of crude at an average price of $96.25 a barrel.

The US government has pocketed a roughly $4 billion windfall from sales of crude this year out of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

In the week ending December 9, the US released about 4.7 million barrels of crude, and the Energy Department has said it will conclude deliveries this month.

Since President Joe Biden tapped into the reserves in March — just after Russia's invasion of Ukraine — the US has sold 180 million barrels of crude at an average price of $96.25 per barrel, per The Wall Street Journal

Brent crude, the international benchmark, is hovering around $80 a barrel, as of Monday. West Texas Intermediate is trading at roughly $75 a barrel.

The White House has said that it plans to start buying oil for the SPR when US crude price hit $70-$75 per barrel.

Last week, the Energy Department solicited bids for 3 million barrels to be delivered in February to its Texas storage facility.

Yet officials also said that the administration isn't rushing to completely top off crude reserves, which are now at about 382 million barrels, because current levels remain high enough to endure any supply shocks.

A senior administration official told the Journal that the Energy Department has the latitude to wait for lower market prices before it begins buying up oil to refill the SPR, and said that the process could take years.

At its peak in 2009, the Strategic Petroleum Reserves held 727 million barrels, data from the Energy Department shows. At the start of this year, those were at about 593 million barrels.

i still see those stickers on local gas pumps of biden saying "i did that" pointing at the price, it's not terrible now. even though he has nothing to do with it.

the wording is also important. he didn't say "I brought down inflation". all he said was "inflation is down". take that as you will. republicans will take that as him taking credit; others will take it as it came down on his watch, and he's mentioning it. either way, he's got plausible deniability if anyone criticizes him for taking credit.

    I'm ok with that strategy.

5 years ago I would have traveled to Russia to check out the tourist stuff.  Now, I'd be more concerned they'd make up some bogus thing to charge me with or throw something in my bag to get caught with.  I wouldn't be some prized target and unlikely, but not worth the risk.

Remember, I didn’t go five years ago.  250k Americans traveled to Russia for tourism in 2017.  685 people a day.  Not the millions each year that  go to Italy but odds would strongly have been in your favor, and would suspect pretty good if part of a travel group.  Rick Steves would probably protect us all.

I guess I just don't understand your point. Are you saying you don't feel safe traveling there now because of the hostage exchange? I would think it would waaaaaaay more to do with them currently engaged in an unjustified war with a neighboring country, but, hey, that's just me.
