I only saw clips, but while he spouts nonsense, that's his wheelhouse. He was also measured and didn't interrupt and act like a fool. So he didn't shit the bed, as far as I can tell.

He absolutely shit the bed, Hugh. There is no other way of saying it. I guess clips do not do it justice just because he looked like he lost from the moment he walked on the stage and it was all downhill from there. He did recover a little in the second half but.....man oh man. I support the guy and I am telling you it was bad. Very very bad.
Even from a substance standpoint--yes he easily beat Trump there as Trump lied the whole night and blatantly did not answer any questions....but Trump would inadvertently set issues up that Biden should have knocked out of the park-- but he repeatedly stumbled because he was so distracted by the utter nonsense coming out of Trump's mouth.
What I don't get is you had Biden half asleep at the debate and was rambling and making zero sense. The next day he's out at a rally and was a completely different guy....energetic, made sense, on point... CNN had a side by side on it just one day apart. I don't get it.

Maybe the debate was too far (4-5 hours) past his bedtime.

Well, didn’t his staff release a statement today saying something along the lines of he functions best between 10-4:00?

No, not a statement. Someone from the WH told a reporter.
Hunter gets it for him. That’s why he’s named Hunter. From southeast DC to the west side of Wilmington to North Scranton and the Cherry Hill section of Baltimore, Hunter’s on the trail.

I don't know what it means to "shit the bed", but I do know Biden had a bad night and most of the people I know and talk to, and most of the commentators I respect (like Dan Rather, for instance), fully admit it was a BAD night for Biden. All of the excuse making is coming from lame sources. I would advice into reading so much of the "we're in it for the money" media crap. Read intelligent commentators or AP news.
I also know this: Trump's appeared more controlled than usual at the debate (not as much word salad as usual), but his comments were nothing more than a string of rehearsed lies. There were other things he said that were totally despicable that we haven't talked about much here, like referring to immigrants taking black and Hispanic jobs, and he was referring to menial jobs. Here's what Heather Cox Richardson said about that:
Trump
said: “As sure as you’re sitting there, the fact is that his big kill
on the Black people is the millions of people that he’s allowed to come
in through the border. They're taking Black jobs now and it could be 18.
It could be 19 and even 20 million people. They’re taking Black jobs
and they’re taking Hispanic jobs and you haven’t seen it yet, but you’re
going to see something that’s going to be the worst in our history.”
Trump
was obviously falling back on the point he had prepared to rely on in
this election: that immigration is destroying our country. He
exaggerated the numbers of incoming migrants and warned that there is
worse to come.
But what jumped out is his phrase: “They’re taking Black jobs and they’re taking Hispanic jobs.”...
...Politicians have often tried to get votes by warning that outsiders
would draw from a pool of jobs that potential voters wanted themselves.
Trump’s comments the other night drew on that racism but reached back
much further to the idea that there are certain jobs that are “Black” or
“Hispanic.” ...
...One hundred and sixty-six years later, Black and Hispanic social media
users have answered Trump’s statement about “Black jobs” and “Hispanic
jobs” with photos of themselves in highly skilled professional
positions. But while they did so with good humor, they were illustrating
for the modern world the principle Lincoln articulated: in the United
States there should be no such thing as “Black jobs” or “Hispanic
jobs.”

Biden denounces Supreme Court decision on presidential immunity By Matt Viser July 01, 2024 at 21:14 ET President Biden on Monday night issued a blistering attack on the U.S. Supreme Court for its decision earlier in the day declaring that Donald Trump was immune from prosecution for official acts he took during his presidency. In brief but forceful remarks that came in a late addition to his schedule, Biden said that the high court was setting a dangerous precedent that could fundamentally change the world’s most powerful office. “For all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do,” Biden said, adding that he pledges “to respect the limits of the presidential powers.” The president also noted that the decision means that it is “highly unlikely” that Trump would be prosecuted before the election in November, which he called “a terrible disservice to the people of this nation.” “So now, the American people have to do what the courts should have been willing to do, but will not,” Biden said. “The American people must decide whether Donald Trump’s assault on our democracy on January 6th makes him unfit for public office in the highest office in the land.” At a time when he is under scrutiny following a poor debate performance that has caused Democrats to question his stamina, Biden continued to focus on Trump and sought to crystallize the choice before the electorate. “The American people must decide if Trump’s embrace of violence to preserve his power is acceptable,” he said. “Perhaps most importantly, the American people must decide if they want to entrust the presidency once again to Donald Trump — now, knowing he’ll be more emboldened to do whatever he pleases, whenever he wants to do it.” The comments marked a rare rebuke of the justice system for Biden, who has sought to distinguish his presidency by attempting to restore faith in American institutions. But Biden — who, as a senator, was a longtime chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee overseeing Supreme Court nomination hearings — has also found himself at odds with some of its recent decisions, including most prominently the Dobbs decision that repealed Roe v. Wade and declared there is no constitutional right to an abortion. “This decision today has continued the court’s attack in recent years on a wide range of long-established legal principles in our nation, from gutting voting rights and civil rights to taking away a woman’s right to choose,” Biden said in his White House remarks. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) accused Biden of improperly attacking the judiciary. “What we’re seeing tonight is despicable and dangerous,” Johnson told Fox News. “The president has been trying to undermine our legal system.” At the start of his comments, Biden reflected on the potentially sweeping effects the decision could have on the conduct of future presidents. “The presidency is the most powerful office in the world,” he said. “It’s an office that not only tests your judgment — perhaps even more importantly, it’s an office that could test your character. Because you’re not only faced with moments where you need the courage to exercise the full power of the presidency, you also face moments where you need the wisdom to respect the limits of the power of the office of the presidency.” Toward the end of his remarks, Biden aimed to place the ruling in the context of history, reaching back to the founding of the nation. “At the outset of our nation, it was the character of George Washington, our first president, to define the presidency. He believed power was limited, not absolute, and that power always resides with the people — always,” Biden said. “Now, over 200 years later today, the Supreme Court decision means that once again, it will depend on the character of the men and women who hold the presidency … because the law will no longer do it.” He ended with a new line, saying, “May God bless you all. And may God help preserve our democracy.” Then, he added, “May God protect our troops.” He then left the room, ignoring the shouted questions about the state of his campaign.

It did to me immediately. These low skilled immigrants coming and and taking low skilled jobs away from current low skilled populace of blacks and Hispanics. His racism was 100% clear.
Even worse, the way he said it you know it was part of the MAGA team plan. He isn't smart enough to change the wording, so he used exactly as it was discussed. If he had just altered the wording it wouldn't have been as overtly racist.
It is a winning message to get blacks and Hispanics to worry about their jobs and vote for the MAGA candidate instead of Joe...until you come out and show your racism so overtly. There are many times when I feel like racism is invoked or used as an excuse, etc when I do not see it. But this was as clear as it could get for me.

Even a good freind, who is super big on following politics and who got together with friends to watch the debate, they chose to turn it off half way through to console each other.
There has never been a worse time (that I know of) in U.S. politics. With all that's going on- the presidential snail race, the SCOTUS being MAGA packed, idiots like Marjorie Taylor Greens actually being in a position as a lawmaker, the overturn of Roe/Wade, states making aspects of religion mandatory in public schools, on and on and on.
And that's just politics. Throw in the threat of AI (and if anyone does not think AI is a threat, I challenge you to ask AI how it would overthrow and wipe out humanity- I've seen the results someone published, it will make you sick). Throw in climate change.
On a personal level, throw in being at the leading edge of a possible record breaking heat wave here in Northern California, and my record and book business dropping like a stone.
All I can do is either laugh or scream...
...but that hurts my throat. Better to...

President Biden on Monday night issued a blistering attack on the U.S.
“For all practical purposes, today’s decision almost certainly means that there are virtually no limits on what the president can do,” Biden said, adding that he pledges “to respect the limits of the presidential powers.”
The president also noted that the decision means that it is “highly unlikely” that Trump would be prosecuted before the election in November, which he called “a terrible disservice to the people of this nation.”
“So now, the American people have to do what the courts should have been willing to do, but will not,” Biden said. “The American people must decide whether Donald Trump’s assault on our democracy on January 6th makes him unfit for public office in the highest office in the land.”
At a time when he is under scrutiny following a poor debate performance that has caused Democrats to question his stamina, Biden continued to focus on Trump and sought to crystallize the choice before the electorate.
“The American people must decide if Trump’s embrace of violence to preserve his power is acceptable,” he said. “Perhaps most importantly, the American people must decide if they want to entrust the presidency once again to Donald Trump — now, knowing he’ll be more emboldened to do whatever he pleases, whenever he wants to do it.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) accused Biden of improperly attacking the judiciary. “What we’re seeing tonight is despicable and dangerous,” Johnson told Fox News. “The president has been trying to undermine our legal system.”
At the start of his comments, Biden reflected on the potentially sweeping effects the decision could have on the conduct of future presidents.
“The presidency is the most powerful office in the world,” he said. “It’s an office that not only tests your judgment — perhaps even more importantly, it’s an office that could test your character. Because you’re not only faced with moments where you need the courage to exercise the full power of the presidency, you also face moments where you need the wisdom to respect the limits of the power of the office of the presidency.”
Toward the end of his remarks, Biden aimed to place the ruling in the context of history, reaching back to the founding of the nation.
