 I don’t think posting about the grant in this thread, and questioning how well that pipe/syringe aspect of it will work, is tantamount to being a conservative radio asshole blowing it out of proportion. But then again, I posted it here so I guess that’s the expected response. For reference’s sake, next time, just go with like Tucker Carlson or someone else people actually know rather some obscure radio guy that you listen to for your ”opposition research.”static111 said:

Won't those pipes and syringes become just as infected as the ones that are already out on the street? WASHINGTON (WTAJ) — To limit infections among drug users, the Biden administration is creating a $30 million grant program for non-profits to purchase ‘harm reduction materials’ including crack pipes and smoking kits. One of the aspects of the program will provide funds to local governments and non-profits to distribute clean pipes and smoking kits to help make drug use safer for addicts. The kits are just one aspect of a list of items that the funding can be used for under the FY 2022 Harm Reduction Program Grant (Harm Reduction). While the kits reportedly aim to reduce the risk of infections for people who smoke these substances with glass pipes, the Harm Reduction funding can also help with the following:- Infectious diseases testing kits (HIV, HBV, HCV, etc.);
- Medication lock boxes;
- FDA-approved overdose reversal medication(as well as higher dosages now approved by FDA);
- Safe sex kits, including PrEP resources and condoms;
- Safe smoking kits/supplies;
- Screening for infectious diseases (HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis);
- Sharps disposal and medication disposal kits;
- Substance test kits, including test strips for fentanyl and other synthetic drugs;
- Syringes to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases;
- Vaccination services (hepatitis A, hepatitis B vaccination); and
- Wound care management supplies.
 In addition, funding can also help with key personnel, education, and require things such as assembling a harm reduction advisory council that meets regularly to guide program activities and project implementation. You can read the entire 75-page Harm Reduction grant form by clicking here. Selling or distributing drug paraphernalia is against federal law, unless authorized by the government. Everything I’ve read points to the reasoning being that new clean pipes/syringes will reduce infections among users. But as I asked in my first post, won’t those just become infected too? I don’t think your typical drug-addicted person gets a new government-issued crack/heroin/meth pipe and thinks “Well I’m going to be careful with this one.”mickeyrat said:Ledbetterman10 said:

I read the article halifax posted. thats just one small component , pipes/needles, to the overall premise. seems weighted toward treatment and overdose prevention/mitagation.surely something needs done. this may be a good first step with some tweaks as results emerge._____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

 Palm Beach Post article explains the policy well. $30M over 3 years and the “crack pipe” distribution via “smoking kits” is just another dog whistle. 3/4 of overdose deaths are from opioid based products and the smoking kits are rubber tips for pipes, screens and alcohol wipes to try to prevent the spread of Hep A+B, among other things. Kit components are determined by community based drug treatment coalitions represented by counselors, former addicts, law enforcement and drug treatment medical representatives. You’d think those illegals with calves the size of cantaloupes were distributing crack pipes in a neighborhood near you. The horror.mickeyrat said:Ledbetterman10 said:

WASHINGTON (WTAJ) — To limit infections among drug users, the Biden administration is creating a $30 million grant program for non-profits to purchase ‘harm reduction materials’ including crack pipes and smoking kits. One of the aspects of the program will provide funds to local governments and non-profits to distribute clean pipes and smoking kits to help make drug use safer for addicts. The kits are just one aspect of a list of items that the funding can be used for under the FY 2022 Harm Reduction Program Grant (Harm Reduction). - Medication lock boxes;
- FDA-approved overdose reversal medication(as well as higher dosages now approved by FDA);
- Safe sex kits, including PrEP resources and condoms;
- Safe smoking kits/supplies;
- Screening for infectious diseases (HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis);
- Sharps disposal and medication disposal kits;
- Substance test kits, including test strips for fentanyl and other synthetic drugs;
- Syringes to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases;
- Vaccination services (hepatitis A, hepatitis B vaccination); and
- Wound care management supplies.
 In addition, funding can also help with key personnel, education, and require things such as assembling a harm reduction advisory council that meets regularly to guide program activities and project implementation. How do the repubs feel about treating the opioid crisis? Anyone? Fucker Carlson have any thoughts? Do the repubs have a plan to fight drug addiction or is out there with their health plan? Or they can describe it like Obamagate? Faux rage of the week.

 My point is that it is a talking point straight from a conservative radio host. Last night he literally said the Biden administration and democrats are giving away crack pipes, and here you are repeating it almost verbatim. Latching onto the safe smoking kit only serves to completely discredit and illegitimize what looks to be a program that is actually about helping people with severe drug problems. And based on the program it doesn't look like it is all about giving away crack pipes.Ledbetterman10 said:

 By saying that, you’re admitting the smoking kits “discredits and illegitimizes” an otherwise pretty good program. The smoking kit aspect is not gonna help people with severe drug issues. It just gives them new paraphernalia that will end up getting infected anyway.Post edited by Ledbetterman10 on2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. The other stuff on the list seems reasonable enough. Limiting infections is a good thing. But I'm not sure handing out crack pipes and syringes will do that. Won't those pipes and syringes become just as infected as the ones that are already out on the street? WASHINGTON (WTAJ) — To limit infections among drug users, the Biden administration is creating a $30 million grant program for non-profits to purchase ‘harm reduction materials’ including crack pipes and smoking kits. One of the aspects of the program will provide funds to local governments and non-profits to distribute clean pipes and smoking kits to help make drug use safer for addicts. The kits are just one aspect of a list of items that the funding can be used for under the FY 2022 Harm Reduction Program Grant (Harm Reduction). While the kits reportedly aim to reduce the risk of infections for people who smoke these substances with glass pipes, the Harm Reduction funding can also help with the following:- Infectious diseases testing kits (HIV, HBV, HCV, etc.);
- Medication lock boxes;
- FDA-approved overdose reversal medication(as well as higher dosages now approved by FDA);
- Safe sex kits, including PrEP resources and condoms;
- Safe smoking kits/supplies;
- Screening for infectious diseases (HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis);
- Sharps disposal and medication disposal kits;
- Substance test kits, including test strips for fentanyl and other synthetic drugs;
- Syringes to prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases;
Funding for the program comes from Democrat’s American Rescue Plan. And you say “ Latching onto the safe smoking kit only serves to completely discredit and illegitimize what looks to be a program that is actually about helping people with severe drug problems.”
 By saying that, you’re admitting the smoking kits “discredits and illegitimizes” an otherwise pretty good program. The smoking kit aspect is not gonna help people with severe drug issues. It just gives them new paraphernalia that will end up getting infected anyway.
 "it just gives them new paraphernalia that will end up getting infected anyway." I'm not sure what this means...Don't help at all because it isn't a permanent fix? This reasoning could be used to discredit anything...Why build new roads and bridges when they are just going to fall into disrepair anyway?
 My point is that the focusing on of the smoking kits is a right wing point that is meant to distract from the larger program that will help. It is framed and stated in a way that gets people that would otherwise be supportive of the program up in arms about the smoking kits.Scio me nihil scire

 "Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) is also flailing. Sunday, on Face the Nation, he said: “This commission is a partisan scam. They're going after—they're—the purpose of that commission is to try to embarrass and smear and harass as many Republicans as they can get their hands on.”
 Yesterday, he released a video saying “Biden is sending free meth & crack pipes to minority communities in the name of ‘racial equity’.... There is no end in sight for this lunacy.“
 This is a wild lie made up and spread by right-wing publications, referring to a drug harm reduction program inviting applications for grants in a 75-page call for proposals. Part of that harm reduction includes infectious disease testing kits, medication lock boxes, safe sex kits, vaccinations, and so on, including safe smoking kits, which do not include free meth or crack pipes but do include rubber mouthpieces for pipes to prevent burns, and disinfectant wipes.
 Drug harm reduction programs have been around in the U.S. since the 1980s, when the HIV epidemic made it clear that addressing drug addiction could stop that era’s epidemic.
 Exaggeration and demonization of their opponents has been part of politics for years, as Republicans tried to fire up their base by describing their opponents as socialists, lazy “takers,” baby-killers, and so on. Now, though, these over-the-top attacks on the committee and on the Democratic administration seem to be part of a new political project."

 Well if that's true, then I admit I was wrong. In the past in California, "safe smoking kits" have included pipes, and California has long had needle-exchange programs. But if that's not a part of this Biden grant, then I was wrong.static111 said:From Letter From An American
