We can argue about the reasoning and morals behind it—for instance, I understand the why but don't buy his explanation (see: every medical professional has known for centuries that wearing face masks of any kind that cover your nose and mouth help to mitigate spreading infectious respiratory illnesses)—but some folks are bending over backwards to say that he didn't know the facts because of the evolving nature of the disease and science, etc.

TBH I've been both impressed with and upset with Biden's handling of this pandemic. Not as bad as trump for sure...but Biden through his entire game plan into Vaccines..... not a great idea. Was a good push but shoulda had other plans. I do support his push to use OSHA to have companies require vaccines....that was a good and smart move in my opinion. Unfortunately the SCOTUS messed that up. That would have been a big win.

Despite bitching about testing from the early days, Biden waits until what is likely the end of the 2nd major variants move through the country to figure out how to make tests readily available.

And allowing 400 million of the country's stockpile of N95's be available is just for show. That's literally about 1 mask per person...lasts about 5 days. And will be available after the latest surge. That is purely a political move. I bought a box of 3M N95's off amazon very easily for like $20.

The team has created an online calculator that allows you to enter a person’s age, vaccination status, height and weight, as well as major Covid risk factors. A typical 65-year-old American woman — to take one example — is five foot three inches tall and weighs 166 pounds. If she had been vaccinated and did not have a major Covid risk factor, like an organ transplant, her chance of dying after contracting Covid would be 1 in 872, according to the calculator. One sign of Omicron’s relative mildness: Among vaccinated people in Utah (a state that publishes detailed data), the percentage of cases leading to hospitalization has been only about half as high in recent weeks as it was last summer.

For now, the available evidence suggests that Omicron is less threatening to a vaccinated person than a normal flu. Obviously, the Omicron wave has still been damaging, because the variant is so contagious that it has infected tens of millions of Americans in a matter of weeks. Small individual risks have added up to large societal damage.

3. Effective boosters

The final major piece of encouraging news involves booster shots: They are highly effective at preventing severe illness from Omicron. The protection is “remarkably high,” as Dr. Eric Topol of Scripps Research wrote.

Switzerland has begun reporting Covid deaths among three different groups of people: the unvaccinated; the vaccinated who have not received a booster shot; and the vaccinated who have been boosted (typically with a third shot). The first two shots still provide a lot of protection, but the booster makes a meaningful difference, as Edouard Mathieu and Max Roser of Our World in Data have noted:

The next stage

The Covid situation in the U.S. remains fairly grim, with overwhelmed hospitals and nearly 2,000 deaths a day. It’s likely to remain grim into early February. Caseloads are still high in many communities, and death trends typically lag case trends by three weeks.

But the full picture is less grim than the current moment.

Omicron appears to be in retreat, even if the official national data doesn’t yet reflect that reality. Omicron also appears to be mild in a vast majority of cases, especially for the vaccinated. This combination means that the U.S. may be only a few weeks away from the most encouraging Covid situation since early last summer, before the Delta variant emerged.

birx offered to be on the same page as trump though. her emails became public after trump left office. she betrayed her duties as a physician by doing that. she was going to go along with whatever narrative the administration wanted to put forth rather than advise the president to the best of her abilities. thank god fauci did not do that or we would be where we were in mid 2020.

I lost all respect for Birx when she made the faces and squirmed after POOTWH looked at her and suggested that we shine a light up our ass or ingest disinfectants and didn't resign. And POOTWH said those things knowing how infectious and deadly covid was, what potential prevention/treatment methods were and for the sole purpose of embarrassing and intimidating a woman way more smarter than he is. And the outrage, 2 years on, due to the sewer of a resurrected Instagram/twitter post regarding "face diapers," is directed at Dr. Ouchie. What was that about critical thinking skills again? Good lord this nation is so fucked.

Wearing face masks of any kind that cover your nose and mouth help to mitigate spreading infectious respiratory (and other) illnesses. Every medical professional knows that -- certainly one who's been in the racket as long as he has. He knew he was lying. Why else add that little nugget about it stopping a droplet?

We can argue about the reasoning and morals behind it -- for instance, I understand the why but don't buy his explanation -- but some folks are bending over backwards to say that he didn't know the truth.

That willful ignorance is not a good look.
