As the second spot holder I want to be clear..

Hugh hit the nail on the head. A few on Nirvanas B sides were droning and sludgy too and carry overs from the Bleach days.
Other bands that are considered part of that movement were the Melvins and Malfunkshin. I would tend to disagree w Bikini Kill though. They started their own Riot Grrrl movement that took on a life of it's own.
By the time the big 4 were popular I'm sure some big time music writer somewhere heard the term Grunge and Seattle and placed that term with anything coming out of there except Sir Mixalot w the moniker "Grunge". Hell it sold clothes on the Paris Runways it was such a movement.
As far as Soundgarden some songs are sludgy but when you have early songs like Fall on Kevs Mom, that ain't grunge.
Pearl Jam hated the term as much of the bands did. Writers needed to package a band's sound.
If you read Wiki you'll just get confused as they say STP are grunge. They weren't even from the friggin area...
Others feel free to add.
Between Hugh's answer and yours, I feel I have a better understanding of what grunge is actually supposed to be. Thank you both for your answers.
Screw wiki, these guys know what they're talking about.0 -

MetallicaGrunge started with Bam Bam, U-Men, Skin Yard, Green River not necessarily in that order. The influence of the Wipers cannot be denied. I recently saw an interview where Matt Cameron said he liked the term and he played in two of those aforementioned bands before SG or PJ.Is Warrant not a hair band because they came after Motley Crüe, Ratt and Quiet Riot?0

side note: don't tell Sebastian Bach on twitter that hair metal refers to 80's bands: he believes the term was retroactively, and doesn't refer to Skid Row, Warrant, The Crue, Cinderella, or any of those bands. he goes nuts about it.By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0 -

PJ I have always considered a rock band.
The band themselves hated the term grunge.
Also Warrant does NOT sound like Motley Crue…There is nothing that sounds like 32 pennies or Down Boys in the Crues discography.0 -

Also Warrant does NOT sound like Motley Crue…There is nothing that sounds like 32 pennies or Down Boys in the Crues discography.Of course PJ is a rock band. A sub-genre of rock is alternative and a sub-genre of that is grunge. It doesn’t really matter if back in the 90s the band hated the term, you are labelled. You can’t shake it.I was labelled a DINK for a lot of years (double income no kids). I got labelled this by my grandfather and it stuck. Lol. Can’t say I liked it a whole lot but I learned to live with it and now that he’s gone I sure do miss it.They are consistently called “longest lasting grunge band” which I find coincidentally does AIC quite a bit of disservice.0 -
Soundgardennever heard Maiden being called a hair band. that's ridiculous.
motley crue is a hair metal.
warrant is a hair metal.
ratt is a hair metal.
being a hair band isn't just about sound; it's also about look and lyrical content. yes, warrant is more "hair pop" than the other ones; like winger, slaughter, etc, but to me they are still all the same genre.
skid row was also hair metal with their first record. then slave to the grind came out and they became more just metal.By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0 -

MetallicaAre sub-genres really necessary? Let's just do away with those. Keep it simple.0

MetallicaI remember the first time I chose Neo Soul on Spotify. I thought "I should look that up after I'm done listening to find out what the hell this is." I still don't know.0

R.E.M.hihobibo said:Of these remaining bands, it has to be Petty. There are 2 bands you can put on at a gathering that everyone in attendance will appreciate, no matter their age, race, or favorite style of music. Not saying that these are people's favorites, but that no one will complain about what is playing.
Those two artists are Tom Petty and John Mellencamp.0
