none of the big 4 are what would classically be classified as grunge. some argue that Nirvana's Bleach could be considered grunge, but nothing after that. Mudhoney. Bikini Kill, Tad, Green River, etc. all those "noiser" bands are grunge.

Thank you, HFD.
I apologize tempo.
TIL that I'm not a grunge fan.
it's funny, I was kind of surprised to "learn" (depending who you talk to) that I'm not really a grunge fan either. Everyone I know still thinks I am. lol

All of this is surprising to me, because I thought grunge had the sludgy sound that someone mentioned earlier. Grunge being "noisier" bands is like being told the sky is the ground.
Where did all the women go? PJ_Soul, JPPJ84, Asterisk on the Street, GlowGirl (voting only), West Coast Dreamgirl, who else is missing?
I am here lurking. I am hoping for a face off between REM and Tom Petty. That one will be an interesting one. I was also thinking of who I might have liked to have seen on this list. I agree with the post above, that most of my favorites were on the British list. But if I could have added two to this list I might have added Prince and the Revolution, and The Band.

Such good choices. Those two bands would've made great additions to the wild card rounds.

Of these remaining bands, it has to be Petty. There are 2 bands you can put on at a gathering that everyone in attendance will appreciate, no matter their age, race, or favorite style of music. Not saying that these are people's favorites, but that no one will complain about what is playing.
Those two artists are Tom Petty and John Mellencamp.
I say something similar. Really, how can anyone hate Tom Petty? Maybe you don't love him, fine, whatever. But to hate him means you have to pretty much hate any form of rock n roll.

I could get behind Prince and the Revolution but The Band are Canadian. Levon Helm is from Arkansas but he was in the Hawks (Ronnie Hawkins band) and moved to Toronto in1958 to become a full time member. All the other original members (Danko, Hudson, Manuel, Robertson) are Canadian.
If Mendozk ever conducted a weakest link Canadian bands edition, the Band should be included with, for example, Rush, Tragically Hip, Guess Who, Arcade Fire, Sloan, BTO, Blue Rodeo, Tea Party, etc.

Oops. You are right about The Band. I guess because of Dylan I associate them with Woodstock. Thanks for the reminder that most of them are Canadian. I would also maybe add Steppenwolf to your list. I think most of them are Canadian as well.

It’s an honest mistake! Helms and Hawkins being from Arkansas originally certainly contributed to the sound they cultivated. When I was a kid and learned they were Canadian it was puzzling to me because they sounded so American. I honestly remember having a hard time wrapping my head around it until learning those two fellas were from Arkansas originally.
