We need a brief history of grunge, please.

wiki has a pretty comprehensive  entry
Normally, I would go that route. I may still have to, but I like the way tempo explains things

    Wiki vs. World's #1 Asshole

I know which one I'm gonna consult.
Wait a minute - it is Ten Club #1 Asshole, not the World's.  Haha

As the second spot holder I want to be clear. .

none of the big 4 are what would classically be classified as grunge. some argue that Nirvana's Bleach could be considered grunge, but nothing after that. Mudhoney. Bikini Kill, Tad, Green River, etc. all those "noiser" bands are grunge.

    @Ho@Hobbes don't bother reading, lol.

Hugh hit the nail on the head.  A few on Nirvanas B sides were droning and sludgy too and carry overs from the Bleach days.

Other bands that are considered part of that movement were the Melvins and Malfunkshin.  I would tend to disagree w Bikini Kill though.  They started their own Riot Grrrl movement that took on a life of it's own.

By the time the big 4 were popular I'm sure some big time music writer somewhere heard the term Grunge and Seattle and placed that term with anything coming out of there except Sir Mixalot w the moniker "Grunge".  Hell it sold clothes on the Paris Runways it was such a movement.

As far as Soundgarden some songs are sludgy but when you have early songs like Fall on Kevs Mom, that ain't grunge.

Pearl Jam hated the term as much of the bands did.  Writers needed to package a band's sound.

If you read Wiki you'll just get confused as they say STP are grunge.  They weren't even from the friggin area...

    Others feel free to add.

First song I ever heard from them.  Instantly loved it.  Forgot about it until now...  Forgot the real name too it's been so long, lol.

I am here lurking. I am hoping for a face off between REM and Tom Petty. That one will be an interesting one. I was also thinking of who I might have liked to have seen on this list. I agree with the post above, that most of my favorites were on the British list. But if I could have added two to this list I might have added Prince and the Revolution, and The Band.

I could get behind Prince and the Revolution but The Band are Canadian.  Levon Helm is from Arkansas but he was in the Hawks (Ronnie Hawkins band) and moved to Toronto in1958 to become a full time member. All the other original members (Danko, Hudson, Manuel, Robertson) are Canadian.

If Mendozk ever conducted a weakest link Canadian bands edition, the Band should be included with, for example, Rush, Tragically Hip, Guess Who, Arcade Fire, Sloan, BTO, Blue Rodeo, Tea Party, etc.

    you missed one.

I've always called AIC and SG "Sludge Metal".

Always thought of them as Alternative.  Metal was different to me.

I like your definition of it though.

what happens in the event of a tie? sudden death (first vote after "regulation" decides the winner?)

I think it should go by seniority- oldest band gets the nod.
Oh, and Metallica was formed in 1981, R.E.M. in 1980.

me and a buddy used to stay up super late every weekend and request Breadfan and SCC to try to tape them, as we couldn't locate the cassette singles they were released on.

Record single was easier to locate.  We could NOT find it either.  Shortest Straw and Eye of The Beholder I think?
