    That depends on what you think getting through means. Short term (relatively), sure, probably. Long term? I doubt it ... All of this shit going on in the US seems to be a pretty clear indication that the USA is on its last legs as it stands. These things are all historically and inevitably harbingers of the decline and eventual fall of societies. Maybe somehow the US can pull its shit together to prevent that, but I don't really see any reasons to just assume that, especially not when you add all the problems that climate change is going to be creating over the next 50 years.

    I don't really think that makes a difference. Times change. That's kind of like apples and oranges. Back in the times you're talking about, the creation of the middle class was still in the future, manufacturing was still growing in the US, the country was still expanding, climate change and everything that comes with it wasn't a factor, the economy wasn't global, the gap between rich and poor has grown exponentially since then, technology hadn't taken over. There weren't fascists at the highest levels of government. Just because things worked out (in ways) in the past it doesn't mean they will just continue to work out forever. All societies fall eventually.

    There may not have been fascists at high levels of government back in the 1860's but there were ruthless racists who wanted to enslave human beings based on their skin color and they tried to secede from the union because of it, which lead to over 600,000 dead Americans. lol. Things have been bad before!

    I get everything you are saying. My point is everyone has recency bias and it's hard to imagine what things were like back in those days. Apples to oranges, sure. But I'm willing to bet people had similar thoughts about the decline of the country back then too.

    it depends what you consider "failed". one could argue it's already failed, with all the bullshit that's going on now, and has gone on, in the last 4 years. if trump were a smarter man, he would have exposed even more of how broken it is.

    I guess you could say that. I never thought of that as decline though. More like an implosion. it probably would have collapsed quickly if the Confederates had won, so that was a really close call, and it would have been a really short game!

    I do agree that it looks like we are in a decline though. You might be able to say that about other democracies across the globe with the rise of nationalism. But I also think millions voting Trump out of office was a welcome sign in the right direction, though. Hopefully Georgia comes through tonight.
