I've never been a 4th of July person. Not that America's independence isn't fascinating. But adults in flag shirts and hats make me cringe. Not sure why. I know I'm an odd duck.

Maybe it's all my time inside this year but the heat has been so oppressive to me. I love summer and  never had a problem before. Am I getting old? Is my body just this adjusted to the inside. Running in my basement instead of outside has become a zone out habit.

I'm not usually a musical guy but Hamilton is amazing. Emotional. Enlightening. Rapturous. Inspiring. Smooth. Diverse....it's everything you want in entertainment. Well in anything.

Been listening to a lot of Springsteen lately, the dude has  such a deep catalogue and digging through 45 years of live offerings is great. He's got a song for everything.

I think all this is teaching me that a day off work, or losing a night of sleep to see a band or be around people is something I'm going to take way more chances on. Post Vaccine I'm going to become a new man.

War on Drugs, Vampire Weekend, Phish, Metallica, Elton John, The Killers (I've got a weak spot)...all on my list of must sees when COVID ends. Springsteen and PJ are givens. I will say that I think I'll make more traveling to concerts a thing. I was watching some videos and realized I need to see Glastonbury at least once. No desire for Burning Man or Cochella. Bonaroo was cool but there's something fascinating about Glastonbury.

I love the Springsteen vault bootlegs that come out at the beginning of every month. I don't purchase them all but I've been binging recently and I just picked up Philly 99 and it's amazing. One of the best setlists and shows I've ever heard. What is it about Philly crowds? They're amazing.

I think I've listened to U2's "Every Breaking Wave" as much as their major songs and the lyrics finally came through the other night. I love when a song you just know turns into something else. Beauty of music. Or Bob Dylan's "Hurricane" taking on a disturbing and relevant meaning in the wake of George Floyd's murder. Music is indeed experience and human history.

Since I feel like I'm living Groundhog Day it was nice to have a distraction in a movie that's like it; check out Palm Springs. Awesome and hilarious and free on Hulu. Should be a cheap imitation but somehow pulled off a vibe unto itself.

I love playing music when the kids are around. It's interesting how my 2 year old loves bass and drums. My daughter (6) loves melody and rhyme. It doesn't matter the genre, those aspects catch their attention. It's fun just seeing what clicks - right now it's The Killers. Lots of beats for my boy.

Had a talk with a friend yesterday and it's fascinating and difficult when life long friends begin to change as adulthood continues to evolve. Views, beliefs, hopes and fears slowly erode what that friendship was. I think a lot of friendships when we are young are based on circumstance and continue to hold due to nostalgia. It's oftentimes difficult when you realize if you met a friend for the first time today you wouldn't be friends. It's weird. It's sad.

I have loved U2 my entire life but I haven't actively listened to them in quite some time. I leave the Stones, Beatles, Who and a few others for long periods but they were soundtracks to the world at large. U2 was something else, it felt like mine and I rarely go back. Maybe a track or two but never full blown. If I listen it's Achtung Baby. But even then it's been quite awhile.

One interesting thing to come out of Covid for me is that I'm reading again. I've always been a voracious reader but kids really take away my ability to dig in...this is the most I've read in 6 years. Not a bad feeling.

Can't remember the last time I had some good garage tv to binge watch. Marvel's Agents of Shield is no masterpiece but it's sci-fi glory

I like The Foo Fighters, probably love em. Haven't seen them live since they opened up for The Red Hot Chili Peppers and blew them out of the water. When an opening band makes that impression I don't abandon them (My Morning Jacket is another). I don't listen to them that often but I've been digging into their stripped live album Skin & Bones and those songs have legs in the barest setting. That's the hallmark of an excellent band.

Been lucky in all this time that my kids and my wife and I for that matter haven't gotten sick. Today my little guy did some solid vomiting. Pretty sure it's just a bug but the fear is so different now. On another note my aunt is pretty sure she has Covid but her doctor said she doesn't have enough symptoms to get a test. I heard of this happening in April/May but we're in July. It's pretty nuts that they aren't readily available.

I don't know why I'm always surprised by random acts of kindness but I am. I'm also forever grateful. Some people are just beyond generous. What if we all tried one act of selflessness a day? Would it be that hard? Could the world be that much better?

Talk about a wonderful surprise. I know Euro dates aren't a guarantee of life back to normal in 2021 but it gives me hope. Just seeing tour dates, even if they're a year out is wonderful. It could be any band and it would feel special but this is truly amazing. I'm guessing we all sorely missed live music and being around people.

Taylor Swift's new album was co-written and produced by a member of The National. Fascinating sound and the influences are definitely there. Strong song with Bon Iver. It's fairly haunting.

Europe is safely opening and we are now shutting down more. If people could get a clue that would be really nice. I'm as frustrated as anyone but come on, it's upsetting.

This reminds me of people who say stuff like this on twitter and then get told then they should just move to Europe.
But you can't move to Europe. They wont let you in cause we've fumble the handling of this situation so poorly here in the US.

That's the thing man, I'm proud of my heritage. My family has been here since before the Revolutionary War and while I love Europe I don't want to leave. I just lament the fact that we see the world handling things and we're not. I don't think that's anti-American, nor do I feel like it's an aggressive belief, I try not to be antagonistic - it's just reality as I see it.

Dave Grohl gets it, why can't people who enforce things? He wrote a very nice article for The Atlantic on schools in the pandemic.

NBA came back last night and I liked the look. I can't say that I care about pro basketball anymore but they did it right. It wasn't weird. I'll tune in some more just to see how things shake out. And let's face it, baseball probably isn't going to last. Fingers crossed it does.

Like most on the board I grew up loving Radiohead but it's interesting as I've gotten older I just don't listen to as much. When I do, it doesn't stick. Except for OK Computer I'm just not as invested. It's not to say the music doesn't have legs - it does. It's still fresh and groundbreaking. I can't quite explain it but that's when I look at Pearl Jam's staying power and love the band even more.
