Yesterday I was listening to Metallica's "One" (the new S&M2 is awesome) and I wondered if this song was metals "Free Bird." The slow burn that climaxes into an otherworldly carnage of guitar and drum. Check it out with that in mind.

I've been spreading my musical wings and I'm ready to give a shot to some rap/hip hop with Paul's Boutique and The Blueprint. I've heard songs but I don't think I've ever dug in album wise and in my opinion the hallmark of greatness is the album.

I love the "vote" component the band has put on this web site. I get how people can be rankled when their band gets involved but what I'm seeing these days are people with all the power doing jack and the people with a voice are sometimes doing what those in power should. Why does a band have to advocate for this? Well because the voices that should be aren't.

It's sad that an event like 9/11 is a foot note in the news at this point. Our media cycle is so saturated and so set upon the moment that history is mostly ignored. 19 years isn't really that long ago but still....

Lovecraft Country is hands down the most fascinating show on tv but last night's episode was also one of the strangest. It's a show that I have to wrap my head around all week before I get to another one. It's nuanced and layered in ways only David Lynch has tried.

There are few bands I'll pay for the full package other than Pearl Jam - actually no band. But I find myself considering 200 dollar deluxe vinyl sets more now ever (so much great music being released)....Thankfully I always make an excuse or just go for the lower release (I'm looking at you Wild Flowers).

Busted out The Fugees yesterday and talk about a musically talented group. Too bad they couldn't or won't make more music.

It's interesting when looking at the second half of the 90's I always just assumed the boy bands and pop took over but if you look at rap and hip/hop there's a shift away from the early 90's that really focuses on sampling, melody and there is some incredibly great stuff. Just look at Jay-Z's shift and focus. The dude evolved so much - The Blueprint is amazing and ahead of its time or right on time depending on how you look at it.

This forum has been a wonderful place the last few months. I never have complaints but I just come to browse the conversations and I see so much kindness and generosity. The negativity we sometimes see seems to have simmered a lot. It's nice. Thanks all.

Been trying some Kendrick Lamar. To Pimp a Butterfly is challenging, mostly cause I don't get it quite yet. Musically textured and fascinating; lyrically and storywise I'm pretty lost but still digging.

A buddy recommended to me Samantha Fish's album Kill or Be Kind - it's awesome. Blues, rock, country.....it's one of my favorites I've heard in quite some time.

I wish more people would talk about Ruth Bader Ginsburg's legacy than a Court seat. No person is above the court, but why are we above the kindness and respect the deceased deserve?

I remember getting Rolling Stones first edition of their 500 greatest albums. It was divided up by decade and the 90's had a scant few. Now we're some 20 plus years since this and I'm interested to see what they've done.

There are definitely some albums I'm not familiar enough with in the top tier of Rolling Stone's list and while "What's Going On" is shockingly relevant I don't know if it's number 1. When I got the original list it was listed by decade and no rankings. I loved going through the decades just to see what the best had to offer. I'm not sure you can put Marvin Gaye and The Beatles side by side and decide what's "better." I don't know if you can put a greatest hits or anthology next to an album and say a collective is better than a stand alone piece. I don't know what the greatest album of all time is and Gaye is definitely in the top tier and once you get into the top ten does it matter? I love lists. Always have. Even before High Fidelity I've been trying to come up with my top ten albums of all time for years now. I know Blood on the Tracks is there and that's about it.

Best part of massive music lists and streaming services is that I just dig into things I wouldn't otherwise think to listen to. The Stone Roses are up next. I remember that as an album Rolling Stone talked about in their original list....I'm excited.

Amy Winehouse is my choice of the day. Maybe this is cruel, and I don't mean it to be but if she hadn't passed away would she be like a Melissa Ethridge or Sarah McLaughlin....is she just hte female Jeff Buckley...nice artist but really top 500 album? I don't know.
98: St. Louis. 2000: Alpine. 2003: Chicago. 2006: Chicago Night 2, Milwaukee Night 1. 2007: Chicago (Lolla). 2009: Chicago 1 & 2. 2011: Alpine 1 & 2. 2013: Chicago & LA Night 1. 2016: Chicago 1 & 2. 2018: Chicago 1 & 2.
Amy Winehouse is dope. Top 500 for certain, not top 100 but it's great. Patti Smith's "Horses" is another that I can't believe no one told me about before. So good. And and and, The Stone Roses had Oasis beat by quite a few years.

Today's listen - Prince: Sign O' the Times. Prince is hit or miss for me, but when he hits - it's gold.
98: St. Louis. 2000: Alpine. 2003: Chicago. 2006: Chicago Night 2, Milwaukee Night 1. 2007: Chicago (Lolla). 2009: Chicago 1 & 2. 2011: Alpine 1 & 2. 2013: Chicago & LA Night 1. 2016: Chicago 1 & 2. 2018: Chicago 1 & 2.
Sign O' the Times has "Starfish and Coffee" a song I first discovered during a Matt Nathanson concert (yes, you know him for bad pop rock) but the dude is an entertainer and an all time fave for me to see live. I always thought it was a random Prince song but it's got funk and allure and what else do you need in the end?

NFL is getting hit with Covid. I wondered when, not if. It'll be interesting to see how they handle it. Whether they can manage it.

Looks like I'm entering in my Purple phase - Prince is fascinating.

Do yourself a favor and listen to Prince's "I Will Never Take the Place of Your Man." It's awesome. Pop but guitar. Layered. Yes, Prince is a new passion.
