Had a conversation with another contractor at work today. He made a comment about " going to be shut down soon, work while you can",  I asked what he meant because we are already on a " shut-down"..He replied " We are all going to get covid eventually and have to shut down..work while you can"...That REALLY made this virus sink in a bit more..

First, thank you for teaching. You're not compensated well enough for what you have to try and accomplish.

I watched Anderson Cooper last night and I have an issue with how you've framed this particular issue on reporting. I didn't hear him call her an "idiot," but rather what she was claiming as "idiocy," in light of the fact based evidence he was presenting to her. "Arguing that we need media to tell us what to think?" Hardly. Anderson was calling her out. You can still choose for yourself whether she's an "idiot," or what she was espousing was "idiocy." There's no finality to the debate. In how Anderson presented the evidence, and her claims of denial, yes, she's an idiot. And Anderson didn't tell me to think that. I witnessed it. Do you think the mayor's argument was valid, fact based? Or do you think we should be like Sweden? "Smart business people," are infectious disease experts, too? I didn't realize that was something they taught in business school, or the school of hard knocks, Pandemic Response Business Continuity 101?

"Let the market decide." Well, the fucking advocates for re-opening the economy and letting America go back to work, should practice what they preach and do what they advocate for. Like Randy Paul screeching about "going back to normal" but advocating for remote voting for himself. Or the dipshit mayor of Las Vegas who won't visit casinos because, "she doesn't gamble."  So, all those employers who tell their employees to return to work, and either A) don't have anything to do because there's no customers or B) get sick and cant work, what about them? Can they decide to stay home and collect unemployment?

Is Las Vegas open to everyone or just Americans? Seeing how the mayor wants her citizens to be a "control group?"

Hate to break it to you but get ready for the second wave of infections and deaths and see what that does for "business."

    (Edit: I didn't realize a B ) gets you a cool dude emoticon)
One of the inappropriate thoughts which I dare to speak out loud right now -- I'm totally okay with certain groups of people in this country volunteering to be our control group. No problem with that at all.

I just re-watched the complete interview Anderson Cooper had with that idiot Las Vegas Mayor. Guess what? He never called her an idiot. He called a statement that she made, "ignorant." Is it possible CNN edited the interview they posted on their website? Sure, I guess. I found it on my phone and can't find it on CNN's page. If you can find it, watch it. Then decide for yourself if the mayor of Las Vegas is an idiot. Don't think what Anderson Cooper wants you to.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/04/23/politics/carolyn-goodman-anderson-cooper-las-vegas/index.html
I also did not see him call her an idiot. That doesn't seem to be his style. It's obvious to the viewer that she is without him having to say it.

People are not literal enough with the word "ignorant." It's often not an insult but an observation.

I don't watch CNN or care to start watching it now, but it sounds like perhaps Anderson Cooper meant it quite literally and that the internet took it as an insult on the mayor.

I don't care enough to watch even 10 seconds of Anderson Cooper to clarify this, but for those of you who do watch, maybe bear in mind the literal meaning of the word ignorant before getting it twisted.
I think maybe I started this Anderson Cooper thing. It was an EXAMPLE in response to someone else's point that the media is out of control.

My concern is way larger than the "both side-ism" people like to engage in. I'm concerned that our democracy depends upon a responsibly functioning free press, and it's totally out of control. This is what I care about when I choose my news sources, courtesy of the late Jim Lehrer, one of the best role models out there (may he RIP). I've bolded the ones especially pertinent to some of the responses I've received to the AC 360 example I gave:

    Jim Lehrer's Rules for Journalism

    • Do nothing I cannot defend.
    • Cover, write and present every story with the care I would want if the story were about me.
    • Assume there is at least one other side or version to every story.
    • Assume the viewer is as smart and as caring and as good a person as I am. Assume the same about all people on whom I report.
    • Assume personal lives are a private matter until a legitimate turn in the story absolutely mandates otherwise.
    • Carefully separate opinion and analysis from straight news stories, and clearly label everything.
    • Do not use anonymous sources or blind quotes except on rare and monumental occasions. No one should be able to attack another anonymously.
    • Finally, I am not in the entertainment business.

And yet you’re claiming the press is totally out of control based upon a false report or post that Anderson Cooper called the mayor of Las Vegas an idiot. He didn’t.

I’m not a journalist so I don’t have to assume everyone is as smart as me. I’ve made the observation that there’s a lot of stupid viewers out there. Do you doubt that?

How has Anderson Cooper not lived up to Jim Lehrer’s ideals?

So you're saying AC doesn't need to assume his viewers are smart? Or that he's not in the entertainment business? Or that when he tells a mayor she is "ignorant" or an "idiot" (pick your synonym), he doesn't have a responsibility to just add the simple words, "in my opinion . . . " ? Okay. Thanks for sharing.

I was just thinking, while momentarily doing something else, that this forum actually is just a different form of what we see on the networks. Shifting attention spans, gotcha moments, using memes and soundbites to narrow ideas. Ugh. I've thought it before and I'll say it now -- I need a new hobby.
