I think Pete and Warren would mop the floor with Trump in a debate. Can you say with confidence that Biden would?mrussel1 said:

When you are right, you’re right. I’ll vote for him over Warren any day. Not because I like the guy, but because his policies aren’t all that threatening or extreme.dignin said:

How often does a president have to debate? How often does he riff? Not very often. His/her decisions are informed by a team of advisers that deliberate before making a decision. Speeches are written in advance. While I wish he didn't gaffe, he has done so his entire career, even when he was a young man. It's so irrelevant in the grand scheme of a president's duties.gimmesometruth27 said:mrussel1 i disagree. we are a laughingstock on the world stage right now. we do not need biden going in there and continuing the clown show. i love fighting joe, but he is not the guy to follow trump in my opinion. it will just be the same thing, gaffe after gaffe. maybe not as often as dumbass trump, but joe will make a lot of mistakes, and we can't have that.I have sometimes half jokingly/ half seriously proposed the idea that we don't need a president but rather someone to represent us like a king or queen or "Country's Person of Importance". I say that because in so many cases, a president does exactly what you are basically saying here: they read a speech someone else wrote, make decisions based on what advisors say they should do, and cave in to pressure from others with a lot of money and power. If that is the case, what we really need is someone cool and suave to represent us. Maybe someone cool, smart and sophisticated like Denzel Washington or Ethan Hawke. Don't give them any real power (since the president doesn't really have all that much autonomous power anyway), just let them represent us in a way we can be proud of.But since no one on the face of the planet has taken my suggestion and run with it, how about we elect a president who isn't a dick, doesn't come off like a buffoon, isn't a bigot or sexist pig, who is smart, diplomatic, well spoken, compassionate, resourceful, and at least decent looking. Is there not one person in politics at least a little bit that anymore? I fear not.

Debates don't win presidencies and debates are not judged by a panel on the merits. I think the whole debate thing is rather silly. I don't even watch them anymore. It used to bre more meaningful when people got their information from the nightly news and newspapers.dignin said:

I disagree. To think that a debate can't win or lose a presidency ignores history. Especially in a historical period where elections have been decided by only thousands of votes.mrussel1 said:

Historically, you are correct. Certainly Kennedy's performance against Nixon in 60 was pivotal, as was Mondale/Reagan, Regan/Carter. However, I don't think that's the case anymore, considering the constant news cycle, people choosing their news sources/angles, etc. That's why I said it used to be more meaningful.dignin said:

This is why I like Biden. She cost him 10 points in the polls with that ridiculous busing comment, yet he is still able to put that aside and recognize that they're on the same fundamental team, and compliment her twice in two days. Not many pols would do such a thing. He appeals to Americans' betters side.Halifax2TheMax said:0

Nope. I'm not saying that. I'm just saying for me, the debates aren't particularly instructive in understanding how a president will govern. A debate is about how well someone thinks on their feet, positions an argument to corner their opponent, etc. That's not really how a presidency works. I can get more information from reading their policy positions on their websites, something unavailable in 1960. Now there is value in hearing a candidate deal with counterpoints, and that's why I like watching a candidate in a one on one with Chris Wallace, George, Chuck Todd, etc. Those conversations are valuable to me.Halifax2TheMax said:
