Drugs played a huge part in the Grateful Dead shows and the vibe of the crowd. Not saying that’s a bad thing at all, but a PJ show is great sober or high as fuck.

phish and tool are just as good if not better in the live setting
  • pearljammr78pearljammr78 Posts: 1,613
Never seen Phish but seem like another band that drugs make a lot better.
Tool are phenomenal live but the fact that Maynard hides in the shadows now kinda gets me. Saw Tool in a small theater in 1997 and was one of the coolest experiences ever.

What makes PJ so much better to me is the banter from Ed. The variety of the set lists. The fuck up of lyrics or songs. The unity of the crowd. So many other things that I have never experienced at any other show and I’ve been to tons.

For my money. Give me PJ or give me death.
    Peace,Love and Pearl Jam.

the grateful dead were unbelievable. the 2 channels on sirius that i listen yo constantly are pj and the grateful dead. was lucky to have seen the dead at their peak in 76 and 77' and 80's and 90's too.  those early dead shows would be at least 3 hours of music with a half hour break in the middle. epic. but of all the shows i have seen since 73' eddie coming out to do those pre openers was epic as well. have never to this day seen anyone else do that. bring on a tour.

Never heard Phish, but while Tool is an incredible band, the same short set every night makes it a completely different experience than PJ.  The spontaneity of a PJ live show is what has made it worth traveling the world to see 100 shows.

I tend to agree but they are still waaaaaaaaay better and more varied than 90% of the current touring acts out there.

It did start to feel a little stale at times, yet they still manage to make every show feel special. Weird paradox.

It is like Law & Order.  Was a hit show for 10+ years even though every episode had the same arc.  Different but the same.

All they need to do is move around Porch, RVM, Alive and scrap RITFW and that would fix most of the stale talk.

Look at the Euro shows from 2018. How can anyone say that is stale? 2016 too. The format maybe stale but setlists have been on fire. Yes they can change their second encores last 3 songs more and their set closers but other than that we have it good imo.

Yeah agree that there is an obvious formula with where songs go, they have a list of openers, Even Flow mid main set, closers etc. Think there's like 10-15 huge songs, 10 deep cuts and the rest are whatever the fuck they want to play. I've seen them 9 times and am (slowly haha) coming to terms with having seen most of the songs in a gig live-the last few I caught 3 each gig that I hadn't heard. But the point is with such long sets and their wont to change things up makes it so rewarding following them on tour-way more so than a lot of other bands. Tool is my joint favourite and a mindfuck-due to the nature of the music and Adam's direction the light/video show is way better as it's more of a presentation but their sets are more rigid and I don't think you'd get the same value out of seeing Tool for 10 straight gigs as you would PJ or the Boss just due to the set variations.

Not thread-related but this seems like the most active thread and my post doesn't warrant it's own thread. PearlJamOnline posted a sweet video I've never seen before, and I don't know what show it's from. But it's a comedy skit with Mike, Dave Grohl, and Kim Thayil. '

Agreed. And to make it worse, it was mostly debates about Grateful Dead and Phish. That's worse than me having put "ugggghhh" in the subject line when I changed it to 2020 rumor thread.

The private distribution of PJ tickets driving up resale prices and limiting access is a tiny black mark on an otherwise stellar experience. (Way back when it used to happen).

  • Honest question, and not trying to stir this thread up anymore than it already has been buttttt:

why have we/did we not seen a PJ Amphitheater tour in the 2010's? It seems like its the thing for major bands to hit the ampi's every summer when they are open... It seems they prefer arenas. Anyone know why?

Saw them in amphitheaters in 2010 and 2011. I think it mostly has to do with them not playing many concerts in the summer the last decade

I was asking myself the same thing last week.  What was the last US shed show?  PJ20?

    Weather can't impact arena shows.

If/when they do tour, can they bring it like bruce for the 3 hours of craziness still, or will it be a few less songs?

With Bruce being old and all, they’re a few years on and it can’t be easy

Maybe I am missing a couple but we only got Seattle 2 and Rome last year for monster shows. They seemed to be trending the song numbers down last tour for sure. I am curious if this is where they go regularly from here which I would be bummed about especially with a new album taking up 1/3 of that show.

I would fully expect a decrease in songs. I would not be at all surprised if the postponed show last year due to Ed's voice is a key factor in the decrease in song quantity. Look for more slow songs to, as they will be less of a strain on his voice.
