Well unfortunately for those four candidates, the "rules" of American politics applied. No rules applied to Trump in 2016. It was crazy to watch. Can you imagine if Mitt Romney wouldn't show his tax-returns? His candidacy would be over immediately. Or imagine if David Duke and the KKK endorsed Romney. When asked about the endorsement, Romney would have said "There's no place for racism in America. I completely disavow that endorsement." But ya know what? I bet Romney would say to a staff member behind closed doors "Man, wouldn't it be great if I could accept that endorsement get the racist vote?" Trump on the other hand? "Duh I'm not even sure who David Duke is. I'd have to research him." Now that's not exactly an "acceptance" of the endorsement. But even the most brain-dead hillbilly racists would understand and say "Well even Trump can't come out and just say he likes the KKK, but this was close enough."

I think the goofiness of Trump makes him popular. He's a cartoon. You can be free to be a racist and not even think too much about it because you are in the MAGA Toonville.

I'm sorry, the character of our president is representative of the character of our country. Trump seeks to divide the people with his rhetoric and creates policies to reward his supporters, not the country. Now maybe you can argue that those policies do actually reward the country (I would strenuously disagree), but the way he frames them is designed to separate them. In fact, ironic to your post, all of his rhetoric is emotion based, so I don't know how you can throw a stone when the president you support is the master of emotional manipulation.
