If I walk around town wearing a 49ers hat and hoody... I’m advertising where my loyalties are.

If I show up to a conservative rally wearing a MAGA hat on... I’m advertising where my values rest.

You are completely wrong Del.  Just because you have a MAGA hat doesn’t mean you support all of trump’s policies. I voted for Obama twice and had his election stickers on my truck. Does that automatically mean that I was for gun control?  Obviously the answer is no. Don’t paint everyone with a broad stroke because if you do then you are just like the president you despise.
Okay well tell me this then: what Trump policies does a MAGA hat wearing guy support that I can or should respect?

I’m willing to retract my statement if there is something there of substance.

I pretty much agree with everything you said her, Thirty.  But maybe a good question to ask is, What will more likely change the perspective of someone who wears a MAGA hat- ridiculing someone you don't know much about other than a quick glimpse on social media or educating them about the reality of the fact that Trump and his supporters are generally making America worse, not great?

Don't get me wrong, I have the save gut reaction to anyone wearing a MAGA hat- "You're an idiot!"  But telling them that might not be the best way to change their mind or reverse the tide of what many of us see as an ever worsening of America.  It's easy to do the former, damn hard to do the latter.  I'm sometimes guilty of making the wrong choice that way.

Honestly Brian... I don't think there is any changing a MAGA guy. I think their character has been forged from day one and they are as set in their ways as anyone could be.

I think the real question is how do you keep someone from becoming a MAGA guy before they become a MAGA guy (even if upbringing is somewhat damning)?

So what is a guy wearing a MAGA hat doing wearing it? Was it simply a random selection between that one, the John Deere one, or the Winchester one? There's maybe a few random selections out there, but for the majority of MAGA hat wearers... they're flaunting their value sets embodied by the orange one and his rhetoric.

It's not apples to oranges. It's exactly the same thing. Unlike every other era... US politics is not that complicated at the moment.

Edit: Not that complicated with regards to how people should view their president.

  • The thing about wearing a MAGA hat for me is that the wearer is endorsing a POTUS who lies 15 times a day on average, who’s policies are not grounded in reality and are based on lies, who has denigrated every aspect of our democratic republic, only cares about himself and who has colluded with a foreign power to undermine and steal an election, among many other transgressions (good people on both sides, etc.) There is no peeling away single issues, like gun control or tax policy, from what that hat represents. Furthermore, I highly doubt that facts, reasoning or any kind of attempt at trying to persuade them with reason is going to change their viewpoint. The only thing left is ridicule, scorn, contempt and shunning. They’re lost.

these kids come from an area thats fairly republican, growing up in households that are republican, go to a catholic high school that by definition is conservative(in spite of the jesus part) in DC  for a pro life march. AND they are teenage boys, which by most definitions make them assholes, born in a time where trolling is sport.

we choose to make the focus on them and the native dude(one whos history has been sugarcpated a bit) but largely ignore the instigators here. 4 men, excersizing free speech. rude uncivilized speech, at the memorial site for the man who oversaw the ending of slavery on MLK weekend. spewing garbage at passers by, for seemingly no other purpose than they could.

What have I missed about McDonald that I should respect?

    Anyone?

Can anyone list two items of relative significance that we can credit Trump for so that I might be able to respect a MAGA hat wearer? Exactly what is the upside to this guy and why should I respect him and his followers?

Halifax listed a bunch of items that lend credit to my initial assertion. Is there anything to the contrary (outside of Hillary) that speaks to the value of Trump?

Give us a try. Put out one or two of Team Trump Treason’s policy positions and the reasons why a non-MAGA hat wearer should respect the MAGA hat.

Were you with the prison sentencing reform bill during the crack epidemic? And why now? Because a whole slew of white folk in suburbia are opioid addicts, like Rushbo? Ever wonder why the African American population percentage has been static during your life time? Of course not.

Yes.  Mandatory sentences for crack (way higher than powder coke) were obviously racist.  But that’s not the point.  The point is that I’ll give Trump credit on those rare occasions it’s due.  But it doesn’t make him a great (or even adequate) president or person.  It’s in response to the “if he cured cancer” stuff.  And if he did, he’d still be a terrible president.

But my gosh, there’s some truth to the theme.  I gave Trump about the only nod I could think of and you essentially called me a racist.

But for a repub congress during 8 years of Obama and Jared Dear Boy’s dad being locked up, as well as some very close Team Trump Treason associates about to be locked up and voila, you have prison sentencing reform. I don’t think you’re racist as much as giving too much credit to Team Trump Treason. Without Jared Dear Boy he’d still be playing fireman. It’ll be interesting who gets to take advantage of said change in the law.

I’m not really giving him lots of credit.  All he really did was sign a rare bipartisan bill.  The only other positive thing I can think of is his cameo on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Again the point is you can give him credit and still be horrified by the whole treasonous circus.

I hear what you’re saying but the criminal justice reform bill already had massive bi/partisan support. All Team Trump Treason did was sign it. It’s not like he brought two opposing sides together, cajoled members of both parties to see his way and then built a consensus to get a bill passed. And if you asked him today what the bill does, he’d spout off about the wall.

I can agree that prison reform is sorely needed. I haven’t read this whole bill so I can’t comment on specifics, but if it is as portrayed its a good thing.

I wonder if even a single MAGA hat wearing individual would list “prison reform” as feature of Trump’s platform that they like, though.

When desperately trying to concede TWO significant items so that I might resist stereotyping MAGAs... there is this point when generously conceding this item.

Still waiting on another. It won’t be coming. I think the point has been made: you can make some pretty safe assumptions about MAGAs.

To clarify... I don’t think it would be fair to say one can safely stereotype any Trump supporter- just the really enthusiastic ones that wear the team gear.

    On to the next topic.
