We will try to comfort child murderers as the poor poor killers are forced (gawd we should just get over it already... right PM Purple Socks?) to serve time and hastily admit violent refugees without proper vetting... but we take a strong stance against a family that owns property, run small businesses, and volunteer in the community.

I don't think it makes sense to connect these two issues.
But I do hate it when Immigration Canada does this kind of thing to productive people who want to be citizens, while it gives way too many chances to certain other immigrants who are bad from the country. I think Immigration Canada and many of its policies and procedures need a MASSIVE overhaul. I've been saying so for years.

I just had to toss that one in there because it bugs the shit out of me.

The family can stay.

I think that tax should be more connected to income combined with property value. I do know that a LOT of those homeowners can easily afford that tax (including my bro-in-law and sister) and, considering how they are all treated like royalty otherwise in those areas, I don't mind the tax in principle. But i also know that some people with average incomes or retired people are just sitting in a house that was totally cheap when they bought it and it simply appreciated by millions and millions while they lived there for years and years. These are teachers and trades workers and small business owners and people on pensions and shit, and they are already struggling with the massively inflated property taxes reflecting the real estate boom/crisis. Those with incomes under a certain a level should absolutely be exempt.

But don't let some of these people fool you. Many are fat cats who play the system like mad, are fully reaping the benefits if being the special people in the rich neighborhoods who are served better by tax funded institutions in general, including schools, and they can and should put a little more in.

Yes, that is true. If you have been in your home for 30 plus years might make your home worth millions, but if you are retired nurse, the teacher pension certainly does not reflect the value of the house. So maybe property taxes should be on household income. We can not assume every homeowner is wealthy. Even though as you said, "there are many who are wealthy.

so starting today, cops can pull you over and force you to have a breathalyzer, with absolutely zero cause. before today, they had to have reasonable suspicion you were under the influence. people are freaking out that this is a slippery slope and totally unconstitutional.

I would have rather have seen harsher penalties, especially for 1st-time offenders. I am sure it will be challenged at SC.

Yeah, I am not comfortable with this at all, to say the least. I have seen many people go off about how we shouldn't care unless we're drinking and driving. Obviously those folks are missing the point, lol. In any case, I think this will be challenged in the courts almost immediately, and I can't imagine it will hold up at the end of the day.

yeah, i saw a post on twitter saying that very thing. I'm thinking ok, but I have nothing to hide in my house either, doesn't mean I think it should be legal for cops to demand entrance without cause.

how about a cavity search with no cause? how about being handcuffed and being thrown in jail with no cause?

You are right people who don't drink and drive should care. We all should care, it's slippery slope they are walking on.

Yes. Disappointing.

The main negative feedback I heard from people was (1) the question was too complicated, and (2) there were too many unknowns with a Yes vote for people to feel they knew what they would get.

And now it's off the table for the foreseeable future.

It's also very possible the no rejected is because they do no want fringe parties propping up the government. Even though I do not consider the green party of BC as a fringe party (they got 17% of the vote), but my guess most people are only looking at a party with 3 seats essentially propping up the government. Looks like the issue will not be revisited anytime soon.
