Correctional Service Canada (CSC) is looking into how an inmate escaped from the Mission Institution minimum security unit Saturday night.https://globalnews.ca/news/4423451/inmate-serving-time-for-manslaughter-escapes-missions-minimum-security-unit/
I wonder why he escaped from a minimum security facility ... hmmm .... lets think about. It could be because he is only serving a 14 year sentence for manslaughter, arson, escape, and other offences. Don't look into to hard.Give Peas A Chance…0 -

Yah.
I take a beating every now and then when I refer to murderers and rapists and pedophiles serving piddly amounts of time at a country club for their grievous offences. I've illustrated multiple times very similar situations that are bloody comical.
For the amount of time and effort we place into investigating, arresting, court proceedings, jury selection (100s of people every day for 2-3 cases), parole hearings, housing, etc. to culminate in these laughable sentences... I think we'd be better off just letting things happen.
If the old argument 'consequences are not a deterrent' is valid (and we can't stop crimes from happening given people are unconcerned with consequences)... and the pathetically weak sentences we continually dole out hardly resemble justice (not to mention that to some... they're just 'revenge' anyways)... what's the point?"My brain's a good brain!"0 -

My post was tongue in cheek. I would say I am fed up and have been fed up for quite some time.
We aren't soft. Our lawmakers are soft. Most Canadians- even the most liberal ones around these parts- have grown weary of our judicial system with regards to the 'punishment' aspect of it.

I can't recall anyone ever disagreeing with the fact that Canada's criminal justice system has a serious problem when it comes to sentencing. I don't understand why you continue to insist that you're some kind of lone wolf when it comes to this issue, when the opposite is true. You seem to think the DP conversation and this one are the same (and equally relevant in Canada), when of course they are not at all. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Snap election coming. Seems like the time is right. Conservatives still not a cohesive group. The NDP is coming apart with every word uttered by their leader. Trump plotting the "ruunation" of Canada. Something his base can feel good about. Trans Mountain in shambles. I think a mandate is logical and necessary at this point.
I say do it now. Get a mandate. Step away from the miscreants table and put some faith in Congress and the "adults" looking after things in the Whitehouse. At this point I see Trump imposing auto tariffs as inevitable and mostly because he can. This will be his benevolent outlet to distract from his miscreant behavior and the tightening cuffs a coming.
Any thoughts.I remember when, yeah. I swore I knew everything, oh yeah.0 -
Premier Ford (I hate stating that) is going to evoke the notwithstanding clause to ignore a Supreme Court of Ontario decision to strike his I'll conceived mangle job on Toronto city council elections.
What a jerk.
This blowhard know nothing at all wont be over ridden by the courts, the Country or the invisible man. He knows best right. He was elected with a mandate....to a non existant platform by an electorate grown tired of Liberal rule.
What an ass. Four years of this miscreant.
I need a drink.

Apparently the legal expert....you know the Supreme court judge begs to differ. It apparently is against the charter of rights.

By the way - if you are unhappy with the PC's you can vote them out in 4 years...
The NDP better find a more desirable leader. Because after the next election they'll be back to 3rd place where they rightfully belong...
It is odd, I do not remember seeing that judges name on the ballot.Give Peas A Chance…0 -
Legal scholars surprised by judge's reasoning in Toronto council cuts decision
https://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/legal-scholars-surprised-by-judge-s-reasoning-in-toronto-council-cuts-decision-1.4087964
Richard Moon, a University of Windsor law professor who focuses specially on freedom of expression rights, said on Twitter that “the court's reliance on the free expression rights of voters and candidates is problematic for several reasons. It distorts the idea of free expression - and runs contrary to existing SCC decisions.”“Free (expression) does not protect the right to run for office -- and in any event no one is prevented from running for office in this case. They may do so but in a larger riding,” Moon added.
“There is a plausible argument that free (expression) may sometimes protect a right to vote -- although several things complicate this (i) it is a so-called platform -- that is better seen as based on a right to vote in a democratic system (ii) the private nature of voting is a reminder that this is really about representation rather than expression (iii) voters have other ways to express themselves (iv) voters for council still have a right to vote - just in larger ridings,” Moon went on.
“Finally, it is difficult to contain the claim that voter free expression is compromised by diluting their vote,” Moon concluded. “Why is that not always a problem? Or more to the point how do we determine when dilution is a problem?”
