I've never heard the phrase monkey up.  I have heard little monkey and monkeying around ... but not all were  in a racial context...

I have heard monkey around.  I can see how someone, even someone eloquent, could accidentally use that phrase in relation to black people...the thing is though, you'd need to be pretty stupid or racist not to realize what you'd done and correct yourself immediately in real time.
So this guy is an idiot at the least.

    Why did you censor "this"?

    Not censored, just a blank.
The quote in reference was "monkey things up" but it could easily be "this" "that" "it" or "shit"

Have you ever heard "monkeying around" said in a racial context??
I've personally never heard anyone ever come close to using "monkey" in a that context, period.... To be honest, I've never heard anyone use any racial slur against black people, like in real life, unless they were quoting someone they saw do it or something. I had a great grandmother who reportedly said, "Oh, look at the cute little (P-word)!" about a little black kid in an all white town, but that was back in 1958 or so.
(That said, yes, I am still fully aware of the racial problems going on, and have known black Americans who talked to me all about it - they were in Canada specifically to escape it. So I do know people do it).

I grew up surrounded by every racial slur you can imagine, porch monkeys was a big one.
"N***** rig it" was probably the most common.  Hell, I heard a middle school teacher say it once!
I was recently warned (by a retired home economics lady teacher) not to go to Kennywood Amusement Park because "the blacks have taken it over.  They push white people out of line and start fights"
Later, when we were gently mocking it's very dubious nature, she doubled down and said it was easy to believe because the same thing happened at Strolling N*****s Mall (Rolling Acres Mall)
That lady is someone I love dearly and she's a great person who would never actually mistreat a black person without reason.  That's what people don't understand about casual racism in America, it's not like we have tens of millions of evil people.  They aren't evil, just ignorant and stubborn.

This is why I laugh my ass off when the professor from Canada, Mr BS claims to know what an average Trump voter is, and better than any of us.  What a joke lol

If you haven't ever been told to "n***** rig it" or been accused upon late entry of living on "BPT" (black people time)...you don't know shit about the average Trump voter/supporter.

I think I understand Trump supporters about as well anyone - what you're saying is not surprising to me.
FWIW, I have absolutely known people like that, it's just that they hate East Indians and/or Chinese people rather than black people. Different slurs altogether. Luckily such people are very few and far between here though, and I gather that isn't the case in some communities in the US. Although I do hear that the racism towards First Nations is really, really horrid farther east. It's not so bad in BC, but I am told all kinds of heinous stories about it by people from Ontario and a lot of the prairies.

I  will not say I know for sure that it was a racial slur, but isn't it damn ironic hours after he learns he is facing an African American opponent, the monkey word comes out of his mouth?

What I will say, I'd bet in one of his late night celebrations, perhaps one of his long time pals over some drinks uttered a word or vague thought like that. I'm giving that 51% odds.

What I will say, a common racial slur was on his mind in his first national interview on fox on the day after his primary win, whether or not it was intended as a slur.

If you have an example of a republican candidate using a "monkeying around" type comment when facing an African American opponent, I'd be interested to read it.

I myself use the phrase little monkey, but I'm referring to my dog...she acts like a little monkey sometimes.
I still don't get it. I have no clue why any of you are just assuming it was a racial slur. 100 people could come and say the same thing, and I still wouldn't get why that's the immediate assumption, all things considered.
Looking at this whole thread at once, because I was too busy at work today to be on the forum at all, makes me think that those of us in Canada thankfully don't have the direct experience with the casual racism toward black people that is still prevalent in a lot of the US, like rgambs describes. We hear "monkey" and don't immediately hear it as a racial slur, because we don't have the same historical context. Not that we don't have racism and racial slurs, they're just different; this one doesn't resonate immediately with us.
