now, there's a guy at my work who was watching basketball in the employee lounge....one of the black players dunked the ball, and proceeded to hang and swing from the net. his comment was "and they wonder why people compare them to monkeys". THAT is a slam dunk racist remark. there is no room for misinterpretation on that level.

people can make linquistic mistakes and not actually be racist (especially most likely because he's a southern republican, right?)

depending on context and intent, of course it is. does this senator have previous racial gaffes on record?

Context/intent is everything, and people forget that WAY too much (I'm not sure the DeSantis comment was racist or not - like Hugh said, I'd like to know his history as far as racism goes ... but if it wasn't meant as a racist comment, he needs to learn better how on an "offended hair trigger" so many people are on right now. Not fair, but that's what's going on now.
Holy shit HFD, I can't believe your coworker - how'd that comment go over in the office?!?! I think if someone said that at mine that person would immediately become a total social outcast.

The guy wants to be governor of the state for crying out loud. Team Trump Treason’s ethos has really trickled down.

    Racist racist racist

Anyone making this point is obviously insane. Here's the context: "Let’s build off the success we’ve had... The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda with huge tax increases...”

I’ll just say this living here in S FL, if DeSantis says that monkey term to white political opponent then I can possibly let this offensive term slide. I seriously doubt that he will ever do such thing though.

no, it hasn't. I just don't happen to accuse everyone of one political persuasion a racist/misogynist/bigot/etc.

I'm not saying he's not a racist. But I'm also not willing to jump on the bandwagon and immediately accuse someone of something vile like that from one thing said that actually can be taken in a different way.

accusations like these have real consquences for real people, and all too often the left is way too liberal in doling them out. I'm getting kind of tired of it.

"Monkey" isnt a reach.  It is a pretty obvious standard in our society to not use that noun/adjective in reference to black people. If you cant help yourself, you are probably either a racist, an idiot, or both.

it was only he and I in the room, and regretably, I was too shocked to say anything. I have learned from that experience to immediately call it out for what it is.

it's pretty common knowledge this guy's character, yet he is still with the company, and was at one point promoted as well.

I agree with Hugh on initial reaction. Just because everyone is hyper sensative and looking to be offended.

Obviously it was a very stupid thing to say even if he didn’t mean it racist. And being in the situation he is (having trumps support and up against a black liberal)...I tend to think he meant to say it and knew it could be taken 2 ways. I think he wants white supporters to see the reaction to a phrase I’m sure lots have used and not meant as racist (lots of older white people). He wanted them to see people go crazy and call him a racist right off the bat.  Just my thought though. I think he played the people on this one.

it’s not done in a vacuum. Team Trump Treason and his administration is pretty openly racist. But hey, to each their own. From Team Trump Treason’s tweet regarding “socialists” to the repube governor candidate using “monkey up” with “socialist,” it’s pretty clear to me the comparison being made. He didn’t use any one of the following, “screw this up,” “fuck this up,” “F this up,” “mess this up,” or, “blow this up.” He said, “monkey this up.” Why do you think that was? When referencing the first black democrat candidate for governor of Florida?
