    um, there were 8 presidents who owned slaves while in office. so while Trump and co are surely disgusting, far from the worst in history.

    I'm not making excuses for slave ownership, but the eras are different. Trump stands out in the modern era far more for his obscenity given all we know.
    Agreed. Back then it was "normal" to own slaves (don't underestimate how sickening I find America's history because of slavery). It is not normal now, though, to support a wife-beater in the White House. These two things are not comparable. We are not talking about hindsight here. If slavery had been completely unacceptable at the time when those presidents had slaves, you'd be right. But it wasn't.
