They are in fact human, not robots. I'm sure most military leaders do indeed care about their men surviving battles.

A squad's direct leader cares more for his guys' lives than his own.
His commander cares half as much, and so on up the line until you get to politicians like McCain who don't care at all in the big picture way, although face to face I'm sure he does.

I think they all CARE. I think what you're talking about is, as you say, simply knowing how to see the big picture. It isn't possible to carry out major military operations if you're constantly thinking about trying to save the lives of all your soldiers. You'd be frozen. So because of the necessities of war, you make decisions that aren't heavily based on that factor whether you like it or not. That doesn't mean they don't care. It just means that they know what their job is. It actually must be very difficult. Also, major big picture decisions are often still based on estimated casualties vs pay-off. That is actually a major consideration when battles plans are being made. How much of that is about saving the lives of soldiers vs saving resources to use at the next battle? On paper, it's all about the resources. But on a personal level, I don't think we have any reason to say that military leaders aren't still thinking about the value of the lives saved. It isn't part of the official assessments obviously, but it's still very likely a thing. I believe that high up leaders have feelings about this - they just know how to prioritize and know it's their duty to stay focused on the big picture in military terms. (I'm sure there are some exceptions to this because there are some sociopaths and psychopaths in the higher ranks of the military. I'm not talking about those people).

I figure the majority of them are simply brainwashed into thinking they are truly serving their country and defending freedom, and that brainwashing often starts when they're babies. Then the military gets a hold of them and finishes the job. And then pile on the excessive admiration and adulation and gratitude generally handed to them by the nation and the media and the flag waving masses .... that must make them feel like they are truly righteous. That doesn't mean they are void of emotion or don't value the lives of their soldiers (again, that doesn't include the sociopaths and psychopaths in the military).

Don't get me wrong guys - I know all about the warpig concept, and do agree that there is some extremely sinister shit going on when it comes to the military. I'm just trying to say that that doesn't actually exclude them from caring about soldiers dying. I basically just don't think these two concepts are mutually exclusive.

Objectives trump concern for soldiers' well being.

There is a level of concern for soldiers on the ground in that generals don't wish to suffer unnecessary casualties given there are more objectives requiring soldiers but let's be honest... the bigger picture always supercedes the fate of the individual soldier.

The rubber stamped letters home are not indications of authentic care.

RG was correct though. There is a lack of connection between generals seeking objectives and the personnel required to achieve that objective; therefore, levels of concern for the fates of individual soldiers are diminished in the war room compared to levels of care among 'brothers' who have actually developed relationships with one another.

Am I the only one who thinks Trump's hair suits him perfectly, and that he probably looks as good as he can look with it? Yes, it's fairly strange, and yes, the fact that it is a giant comb over is somewhat comical (and sort of amazing), but I don't think it's strange looking in a bad way. He would look worse if he cut it like a normal person, not better.
