US military officials: Trump-ordered raid in Yemen that killed US Navy SEAL was approved 'without sufficient intelligence'

I will add this comment I found on reddit because it's interesting
It is being reported because some folks in the military and elsewhere are saying the raid was for a political show purpose.
In other words Trump wanted to illustrate why we are banning immigrants from particular countries. The assertion is that he ordered the raid not because it was important to attack this location at this time, but because it was a target in one of the countries in the EO, and planning was done. What was obviously missing is final updated site intelligence. How bad was it? Our guys went in under armed and outnumbered. The reports say they quickly got into a massive fire fight and had to call in gunships to shoot their way out.
How politically motivated was this raid? Well our newly minted Secty of Defense, Mattis, was informed of it while he was at the Alfalfa Dinner. He was not in the Situation Room and apparently did not know it was even on-going.

Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters today.
The operation had been planned for months, and was one in a series of aggressive actions against al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, he said.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/feb/02/trump-approved-yemen-raid-five-days-after-inauguration
Both the New York Times and Reuters carried quotes from unnamed military officials that seemed to shift blame for the mission to Trump and his inner team. It would be an extraordinary development for a president, who is commander-in-chief, to be briefed against in such detail.
The briefings suggested that one thing after another went wrong from the start of the mission, with the Yemen villagers seemingly alerted to the impending raid by drones flying lower than usual.
The special forces, apparently lacking full intelligence, were confronted by heavily-fortified positions, including landmines, and faced heavy gunfire from buildings all around during the 50-minute firefight. One of the US planes sent in to help had to be left behind and was deliberately destroyed.Post edited by JC29856 on0 -

According to the Pentagon valuable information was obtained from the raid.0 -
Yes, I'm sure they did but for the most part they may have used ALL the intelligence that was available to garner a successful mission. I'm surprised more Navy Seals weren't killed. Hopefully, the lesson to be learned here is make good used of all the Intel and be prepared from all sides as to what could go wrong.HughFreakingDillon said:to be fair, did no other presidents have "disasterous" military operations?

I would think that a politically motivated military raid for bragging purposes would have been conducted in Syria. The only country that Trump identified in the EO. That's the country that Trump could really pound his chest over. Yemen, is like picking on the short kid.0

Yet that short kid put up a good fight.....The commandos going into the raid knew they were screwed that should never be. In future missions let's hope our Navy Seals are more prepared for the giant or that short kid.JC29856 said:I would think that a politically motivated military raid for bragging purposes would have been conducted in Syria. Fitting since we have a middle school aged bully for a president. Trump is about making himself feel one way or another, and less about how his actions come across to others. He doesn't really care about other people or their perceptions. You're thinking he has some strategy, but narcissists don't need a strategy.JC29856 said:I would think that a politically motivated military raid for bragging purposes would have been conducted in Syria. I didn't say he has strategy, the redditor did, I was responding to a post about a politically motivated theory from reddit.

Military personnel don't question those who are in command, they will follow orders and support those who are in charge the commander in chief etc. All they ask is to be given the proper equipment, weaponry and intelligence to complete their mission. Without those essentials going into a foreign country on these missions lessons their success rate considerably.JC29856 said:

Yes I can certainly see Trump running a raid in a vassal state of Russia... seems likely that Putin would be all good with that.JC29856 said:I would think that a politically motivated military raid for bragging purposes would have been conducted in Syria.
