A little of my work in progress poster theory:

In a space where everyone will have different tastes with regard to style and coloring, Kong has a lot going for it: Recognizable subject matter that everyone can relate to, nice colouring, old enough to have been unavailable for quite a while, New York show at MSG - these things all keep it pretty top of mind. You don't even have to be a Pearl Jam fan or know anything about the world of poster collecting to say "wow, that's nice". (Many fans may not like the style, but what I'm saying is, even my dad could pick it out of a crowd as a well done, memorable poster).

In short, it's the kind of poster that even if you weren't there, might be desirable and even get hung. Perhaps more universally appealing than say Greenville or Charlotte that will have it's fans beyond those that were in attendance but have trouble breaking through to that next level of wider audiences.

Transformers has a bit of that going for it for sure, as well. Not sure if the availability of variants for that one will cause it to be more or less valuable over time (they are more limited yes but they also mean that hundreds more made it into the market than a non-variant enabled print).

    i couldn't agree more

That's by far my most desirable, and not because it's valuable. At least, it's been my most desirable since I bought the Cincy '03 one. My old holy grail, until I found it:
    image

I will finally be taking it to be framed in the next couple weeks! :)
(and now that I see that SG/PJ one next to the Cincy '03, I'm thinking they would look SO GOOD on the walls in the same room. I guess I like those colours, lol .... Sigh. Never going to happen. I would never spend that much on a poster)

There's one on eBay for ever. It's moldy and the guy painted it with glitter paint to cover water damage. Makes me sad when I think about what happened to that magnificent print.

I get that. I have a a regular AP and I love it. But I can see how people got fed up. I personally think they should have cancelled all the excess orders and let the gold print stay limited as intended.

I would take Cracker Jack or Pitt '13 over Donkey Kong.

Of those three shows, I went to Wrigley only. I think that if I hadn't been to any of the three, I would still feel the same as I just find the other two more aesthetically pleasing.

On the other hand, if I went to all three, I would far & away love the DK more for the sentimental value of being at that unbelievable show. (no knock on that Pitt show, I'm not familiar with it, but I know the MSG show is legendary)

I guess from an outright public demand standpoint, yes DK is one of if not the most desirable poster since 2000, but I don't agree that it's the best.

    That's why art is great.

As someone said earlier, it seems like many frequenters of this board enjoy hyping up a poster to artificially inflate the prices of a poster, and satisfy their own personal sense of material worth. If the Transformer print is so amazing from a purely artistic/image perspective, why were numerous people outraged when it appeared the creators had sold more than the 'planned' number of variant prints? If the art is truly great in an owner's eyes, the limitedness of it doesn't mean didley to the owner - that's just my take on it.
I feel that the people who engage in buying and selling PJ posters in this ridiculously inflated submarket are only competing against other equally minded people..... and so long as you're not hurting anyone then have it. However, in essence you're only driving up the prices for your next gotta-have-it poster.

I think you raise some interesting points. I hope people don't come on here with the intent to just hype up a poster they're looking to sell, or that they acquired in order to justify their purchases. To be honest I haven't seen much of that here. Nevertheless, I bought the SICKEST poster for Philly #1 2016. I mean it's so awesome and I'm looking to sell it for the low low price of $299.99....

But seriously, I think the demand is based all upon the art and subject matter. Perfect example, I think, the Bioworkz Owl for MSG #1. Awesome art. But it's an owl, with no connection to the band or venue. For that reason, I don't think this poster will ever be anything more than just a really nice poster but not worth more than $100 once the newness-hype dies down. On the other hand, the Welker for MSG #2 is about Chinatown, NYC. Anyone who has been to Chinatown can really appreciate this poster reflecting that part of the city. Or, like I said earlier, the Philly #2 from Emek with the subject being evolution, as in "do the evolution", and in my opinion maybe a little tie-in with the skulls/skeletons in the McFarland music video. That's what makes a great poster

I think the DK is easily the most sought after poster, not ever, but certainly in the last 6-7 years

I love the owl poster. In contrast, not really a fan of the emek. It looks like the cover of an Asia album from the 80s to me. And the Welker looks like a Far Side cartoon to me. But that's why art is great. Everyone can like something different.

I agree, definitely the most sought out over the last 7-8 years or so. A damaged one just went for $460 on eBay, I mean cmon, no other recent poster even touches that level

I bought one on ebay a few years back.

The guy shipped it inside of a broken down box via USPS. USPS proceeded to fold the box at various points through shipping. I opened it in horror as the print was creased once horizontally and once vertically. Took pictures, sent them to the guy. He refunded me, was dealing with the USPS, and he vanished, leaving me with a 'free' yield promo poster.

The damage isnt a killer. It is noticeable but not awful. I am still trying to determine if I want to get it restored.

I agree with this. Its the reason I had to have both Sperry's I referenced earlier. The artwork is simply amazing & beautiful. Could give a damn that both prints are runs of 212 & 280 respectively.

There is no answer to this, we all have personal tastes. This is art, and as an art teacher/artist, the only certainty is that people will never agree on what is good or not. Sure we may get it narrowed down, but we will never have a consensus on this. Agree not to agree, be open to all POV's, and understand great art does not need to always be aesthetically pleasing.
