Pearl Jam Cancels 4/20 Raleigh, NC Concert in Opposition to HB2; Official Band Statement

I think our point is while it's a terrible law, we in NC almost feel singled out all of a sudden. There are terrible laws and inhumanities happening in plenty of places where they play. This cancellation feels more like jumping on the bandwagon versus making a statement.

I just hope they don't cancel the Philly shows. Because in Philly, they boo Santa Claus. That is a pretty bad transgression.

NOTHING....they don't care...The people who do care of the honest business working people (some transgender??) who are now not going to make some money to provide for their family due to people coming into the state

So instead you piss off 20,000 people who you already had the support of to begin with to try and reach who exactly?? you think the average person who isn't a fan of Pearl Jam is going to care what Eddie Vedder says? Do you think cancelling this show brings any awareness to those not already in tune with this subject?? NO!

What they did is drive a wedge in their fan base by riding the coattails of Bruce

Lastly, cancel the rest of the tour...Lexington? see ya..some of the worst transgender laws on the books...every city has issues...take the cause to every city or look like your riding the "next cool thing" to be a part of

If the "next cool thing" is to stand up against discrimination, then I hope everyone starts trying to be cool. I did not know what was going on in NC until I heard about the Bruce cancellation. It's an unfortunate fact that when a band takes a stand it gets more media play, which is more effective than just a speech from a stage.

No, its a matter of showing that this wasn't a genuine action by them but mere grandstanding and riding Bruce's hard. If you are going to stand up for civil rights, then stand up for it. Don't just do what's trendy and don't be a hypocrite.

Agreed. Law or no law, some perv can go be a perv in any bathroom they choose. This is about basic rights.

I would certainly hope transgendered people wouldn'tbe harmed either. I would be almost certain that there are more perverse people then there are transgendered people

Clearly this isn't a simple issue. One statement suggests that one position is more important than the other. If a transgendered isn't allowed into a bathroom that is not the bathroom representative of their gender at birth, they risk assault. The other comment suggests it makes it easier for a perverted man to dress as a woman to enter the ladies room with the sole purpose of assaulting a woman in the restroom. Either the transgender is protected from assault or the woman is protected from assault. Can someone explain to me how we choose who to protect? I'm really not trying to be divisive, but trying to understand what and where the answer is.

then cancel the entire tour...if this is a true message then they need to do that because other states have just as bad laws, if not worse than NC

I get your point, seriously I do, but the Denver show with Ed wearing a Bush mask got more press than them cancelling this show did...so don't downplay the message on stage...also, why not hold a rally (like someone mentioned in a different thread) and raise money and then put on the concert and donate some of the proceeds?

It is lame that this ending segregation thing and giving women the right to vote got to be so trendy.

It is very different having this happen.

When Bruce cancelled, I felt pretty cavalier about it... thinking if they cancel, that is fine.
But once they did and I got the message yesterday, especially this close when I was packed, itinerary for the trip set, arrangements finalized, etc.... it was tough. A good deal of anger and disappointment that I didn't expect.

I have been watching and enjoying the shows thus far on periscope. Started watching last night and shut it off after a couple minutes, just not in the mood.

I really wouldn't have expected that.

So people coming to chime in with comments to poke people disappointed/venting with sticks, please consider the perspective.

Totally agree. Where was this cancellation when that law was enacted? Nope. Wait and see what liberals of greater renown do first and then follow suit.

It's a movement. Not a trend. Nothing wrong with following a movement, Pearl Jam doesn't have to be the leader.

I'm proud of the band, and this is the kind of thing that makes PJ special to me. I think it was a tough decision, for all reasons discussed. I think standing in solidarity with Bruce and others played a significant role in the decision. I was at Seattle when Ed came out and sang with Bruce, and when he was done, he gave Bruce and Patti a big hug. These are real friends who care about shared causes, and want to use their influence to make a difference. It is working too. On Sunday morning, the Governor for North Carolina was on Meet The Press, taking tough questions over the same issue, and then they had a roundtable discussing his interview. Glad PJ is keeping the heat on. There's an opportunity to make a difference.

They are making a statement that they are huge hypocrites by not taking a stand against all the explicit racial discrimination in America via the racist voter ID laws. They are making a huge statement by being hypocrites by playing Chile, which has some of the worst human rights violations and laws including no abortions even in the situation of rape.

That is true. Every country has problems, but when the home turf is being stupid and discriminatory, art can make a difference. I agree that they probably wouldn't have cancelled if Bruce hadn't, but it is what it is.
