What about Ed's connection to nature, do those lyrics resonate hard with anyone else? Mr lux is on my team here il bet. When we are backpacking, paddling, climbing, or camping Ed's lyrics seem to reach directly into us. Songs like Swallowed Whole, Yellow Moon, Setting Forth take on a whole new importance when we listen to them on our adventures...I've heard of some folks not liking Swallowed Whole...plunk yourself down by the ocean, burn one down, and if that song doesnt resonate...you are loco!!
Matts is correct, the lyrics are subjective..we are using Thin Air as our theme song for the Euro Tour because we will be climbing at 9000 ft a few times and the air is pretty thin up there...clearly thats not what the song is about, and yet, if you listen to it with intent, you can almost imagine two eternal lovers standing together on an alpine precipice...Monkey Driven, Call this Living?0 -

Politics divide people so why put so much precedence on it? Although PJ is a political band, they're also very much about social and citizen related causes. How about, rather than focus on the differences, focus on the commonalities (which is where this thread has already turned).osteoblastic said:
I'm a long-time fan of PJ's music but a relative newcomer to PJ activism and the fanbase. I am also not a political Democrat, liberal, or progressive (though I used to be). I would say, though I haven't worked out all the "kinks" in my head, my philosophy is very strongly anti-force/violence, meaning the advocacy of voluntary association and protecting individual rights (I don't identify as conservative or Republican or anarchist- I suppose the closest would be Libertarianism [not tea party, people]). So my brain is wrestling with that confusion. Part of me wishes I could sit down with the band and be able to ask how they came to believe XYZ but not ABC. Just to make sense in my head of why they appeal to me so much, and how we agree on so many other things (based on interviews, concert commentary, and lyrics), but not political stance. Hell, maybe they could convince me to come back over to the other side!
How do other non-liberal/non-Democrat PJ fans feel about being major fans of a band who actively advocates for a different system than what you support? I know you're out there, but when I searched I didn't see a post that addressed this directly.
And if you're a liberal fan, feel free to comment, though I'm not looking to discuss whether my political beliefs are invalid/stupid/unrealistic/etc- seems like there are plenty of other threads for that already
Politics do not make anyone happy. Even Eddie is less political than he once was and look at his overall outlook - he is not the miserable, angry young man he used to be, he's much more at peace with himself. Is that not where we want to be, less conflicted and more at peace with ourselves? I look to him as an inspiration, someone who fought his demons and won.
Fuck the politics, and drop our personal stances. Focus on what unites, rather than divides. As for the ranting during the shows? He's the one with the mic; he can say anything he wants. Everyone has their opinions, and just because we don't share the same outlook doesn't mean we can't still just get along and look past the differences.
I still feel these forums can be toxic, but this thread is a breath of fresh air. I like.

I think everyone tends to mellow as they age. Maybe because we become more accepting? Of ourselves, our lot in life, realization life is getting shorter, prioritizing what's important? And like Unsung, I too sometimes wish I could buy 60 acres, build a cabin smack dab in the middle and watch nature a la Emerson or that guy who lived in Yosemite or Glacier all alone for 30 years (awesome PBS documentary on him) and just be chill. Maybe someday. One can dream, right? I totally recommend disconnecting every once in a while. No news, no tweets, Instagram, email, radio, TV, etc. You find that you can live and be happy without knowing all the bullshit. Be in the moment.

Agree with mellowing with age. I have no desire to argue or fight like I used to. Even here years ago I would get caught up. Now I'm interested in hearing opinions and points of view, and forming or changing my own perceptions, but I don't care much about trying to "win" arguments. I do love to read the posts here. I agree with the last two posts although It's funny because for me, along with that mellowness and let-it-go-ness has also come less toleration for certain things, certain traits.
