Brianlux, I was with you until you brought up hummus. Dang, I've tried it so many times but it just doesn't do it for me! Friends will be lost, relationships broken up, but queso will stand as the champion
Mashed garbanzo beans and olive oil. You'll find it at every fifty or sixty-something party in California. Oh, and don't forget the couscous, basmati rice casserole and Chai tea... followed by T'ai chi, of course. :-))

Hummus is one of the greatest things in the universe
Bright eyed kid: "Wow Typo Man, you're the best!"
Typo Man: "Thanks kidz, but remembir, stay in skool!"
am i crazy or does someone shout "hummus" several times during Red Dot?
What about Ed's connection to nature, do those lyrics resonate hard with anyone else? Mr lux is on my team here il bet. When we are backpacking, paddling, climbing, or camping Ed's lyrics seem to reach directly into us. Songs like Swallowed Whole, Yellow Moon, Setting Forth take on a whole new importance when we listen to them on our adventures...I've heard of some folks not liking Swallowed Whole...plunk yourself down by the ocean, burn one down, and if that song doesnt resonate...you are loco!! Matts is correct, the lyrics are subjective..we are using Thin Air as our theme song for the Euro Tour because we will be climbing at 9000 ft a few times and the air is pretty thin up there...clearly thats not what the song is about, and yet, if you listen to it with intent, you can almost imagine two eternal lovers standing together on an alpine precipice...
Oh it's so much more than that. My homemade hummus consists of:
Garbanzo Beans (chick peas) olive oil sesame tahini (optional and sparingly) lemon juice garlic salt pepper cumin red pepper flakes and/or a dash of hot sauce
After that it depends on what variety I want to made (roasted red pepper, 5 spice, spinach and artichoke, chipotle, etc)

I'm a long-time fan of PJ's music but a relative newcomer to PJ activism and the fanbase. I am also not a political Democrat, liberal, or progressive (though I used to be). I would say, though I haven't worked out all the "kinks" in my head, my philosophy is very strongly anti-force/violence, meaning the advocacy of voluntary association and protecting individual rights (I don't identify as conservative or Republican or anarchist- I suppose the closest would be Libertarianism [not tea party, people]). And yet, I still agree with PJ's stances on a lot of values & causes. I was raised in the same liberal metropolis as Eddie, I'm socially progressive, very concerned about environmental issues and peace, strong love of Nature... just can't get on board with turning to government every time we want something to change.
It's so weird to listen to a lot of PJ lyrics and think, "Seriously, you guys sound like such libertarians/anti-force proponents!" and yet they're not at all, politically. So my brain is wrestling with that confusion. Part of me wishes I could sit down with the band and be able to ask how they came to believe XYZ but not ABC. Just to make sense in my head of why they appeal to me so much, and how we agree on so many other things (based on interviews, concert commentary, and lyrics), but not political stance. Hell, maybe they could convince me to come back over to the other side!
How do other non-liberal/non-Democrat PJ fans feel about being major fans of a band who actively advocates for a different system than what you support? I know you're out there, but when I searched I didn't see a post that addressed this directly.
And if you're a liberal fan, feel free to comment, though I'm not looking to discuss whether my political beliefs are invalid/stupid/unrealistic/etc- seems like there are plenty of other threads for that already
Politics divide people so why put so much precedence on it? Although PJ is a political band, they're also very much about social and citizen related causes. How about, rather than focus on the differences, focus on the commonalities (which is where this thread has already turned).
Politics do not make anyone happy. Even Eddie is less political than he once was and look at his overall outlook - he is not the miserable, angry young man he used to be, he's much more at peace with himself. Is that not where we want to be, less conflicted and more at peace with ourselves? I look to him as an inspiration, someone who fought his demons and won.
Fuck the politics, and drop our personal stances. Focus on what unites, rather than divides. As for the ranting during the shows? He's the one with the mic; he can say anything he wants. Everyone has their opinions, and just because we don't share the same outlook doesn't mean we can't still just get along and look past the differences.
I still feel these forums can be toxic, but this thread is a breath of fresh air. I like.

With you on the hummus. Can go rest of my life and not have it again and have tried many times at different places but GF seams to like it so.......
on to thread topic I'd have hard time listening to band that was outwardly socially conservative.

"Hummus" is the hidden track on Yield...in it, the word is shouted several times
Love that little ditty. I believe both that and Red Dot are Jack's work.
And yes, subjectivity is a huge part of it - thankfully so.
That sounds like a good recipe, BinFrog. I actually like hummis just fine.
Yes, rgambs, Ed's lyrics do often connect with nature. That's one of the things I like about Riot Act- lots of nature references like:
Cropduster:
Light green to green, dark green, brown.. Every life is falling down Brown to black, it's coming back Dies to be part of the ground Seed to seedling, root to stem
Eyes, no eyes, there's no difference,... Every life is looking in Swallowing seeds on the deathbed,... Dig a hole in,... the garden.
Green Disease:
And like weeds,.. with big leaves Stealing light from what's beneath Where they have more,... Still they take more
And backseatLover12- great to see you here still. Yes- PJ is a very socially conscious band. How many bands have so broad and active an "activism" section on their web site? And, yeah, great to see a good thread here on the train. Like it as well!

Mead? Seriously? Whats next? Grog in a tankard with a fried turkey leg served by a wench at the ren fest??!!
Oh the humanity!!!! :O)
This made me laugh heartily! One of the reasons I come on the forums everyday. There's always a good laugh to be had!
I think everyone tends to mellow as they age. Maybe because we become more accepting? Of ourselves, our lot in life, realization life is getting shorter, prioritizing what's important? And like Unsung, I too sometimes wish I could buy 60 acres, build a cabin smack dab in the middle and watch nature a la Emerson or that guy who lived in Yosemite or Glacier all alone for 30 years (awesome PBS documentary on him) and just be chill. Maybe someday. One can dream, right? I totally recommend disconnecting every once in a while. No news, no tweets, Instagram, email, radio, TV, etc. You find that you can live and be happy without knowing all the bullshit. Be in the moment.

Agree with mellowing with age. I have no desire to argue or fight like I used to. Even here years ago I would get caught up. Now I'm interested in hearing opinions and points of view, and forming or changing my own perceptions, but I don't care much about trying to "win" arguments. I do love to read the posts here. Some are thought-provoking, some frustrating, some funny. But they all help provide perspective and context. So thanks to everyone who posts here.
And Halifax, Dick Proenneke is the PBS guy you were mentioning. One of my heros! If anyone hasn't seen his Alone in the Wilderness films you owe it to yourself.
"I'll use the magic word - let's just shut the fuck up, please." EV, 04/13/08
I agree with the last two posts although It's funny because for me, along with that mellowness and let-it-go-ness has also come less toleration for certain things, certain traits.
I guess my (little) battles are chosen more wisely now.

Thanks for posting the link and letting me know who it was. The whole documentary is amazing and I would love to spend a week or two in that cabin he built. What a craftsman that guy was as well. Just amazing. Thanks again!
At their core, it seems the values of the band members are to promote a sense of community among people. A sense of duty to those who have some kind of inability to take care of themselves and to fight against those that take advantage of that desperation. I believe in the same thing, just seems like I believe in a different ways of solving it. When all you want is a better world, discussion and listening with an open mind is always a better path.
that’s right! Can’t we all just get together and focus on our real enemies: monogamous gays and stem cells… - Ned Flanders
It is terrifying when you are too stupid to know who is dumb

Its interesting to look at how people do what they do in terms solutions and making the world a better place. My wife told me yesterday that she believes most people do what they do things and think they way they do because they believe they are doing what is best. We were talking about some of our county supervisors who are more in favor of supporting developers that they are supporting our dwindling small farmers because they believe that the result of developing will bring in more money to the county than farming. The problem, she says, is in not seeing the logical consequences of actions- short term gain vs long term. I'm not as convinced that everyone does what they do for the common good, but I think she is right on about the importance of looking at long-term consequences.
I also agree with you, mikepegg, that discussion and listening with an open mind are very important. That's one of the things I like about AMT.

Non liberal fans cannot afford to be conflicted, the number of substantially Conservative rock bands is dwarfed by the number of liberally slanted acts. The whole entertainment industry has a massive bias towards liberal politics.
Of course it doesn't help that the most noticeably conservative musicians are also total fucking whackjobs, like Ted Nugent.
I can 100% get onboard with the nature /Natural spirit aspect of PJ/Ed. Bits of it show up in even the most unlikely of songs. And I love it. I wonder sometimes whether Ed isn't secretly a pagan or druid, for how much inspiration and spiritual guidance he seems to get from the natural world and the Earth at large.
For me, that actually outweighs any political support I may disagree with (and what most often unites me with those of other political gradations).
I gotta say it now, better loud than too late.

Same here. I really dig the nature connection of PJ- and not just Ed either. Stone is very environmentally focused. I'm guessing the other guys have a lot of nature/Natural spirit as well. It's no wonder they've gravitated toward Neil Young over the years.
As for hypocrites- we all are to some extent. If we were totally nature oriented we would not have computers and would live tribally. But as long as we live in an electronic world I'm ok with being a part of this Electric Tribe.
