I think someone can disagree with someone's orientation without being a bigot. It can be a "just not my thing" without being malicious.

I'm not attracted to men, I like women. I don't see why a man would attract another man. But I also don't care if two guys love each other and want to get married. It does not affect me. I say go for it.

I have bigger fish to fry and other things to worry about. People simply need to mind their own business and not concern themselves with what others do as long as nobody is being harmed.

Those that cry about the religious aspect and it being a "sin" are in no position to judge. Ultimately, if you are a believer, judgement is not in your hands. Leave people alone.

Saying "I'm not gay" (or "it's just not my thing", as you put it), isn't the same as "disagreeing" with it. "Disagreeing" with someone's sexual orientation is like "disagreeing" with their skin colour.

I also believe it is better to have an open acceptance towards people and give them the benefit of proving themselves as individual humans, than to close the door on millions of people due to fears of stereo-typed characterizations of a whole class of humans.
So, i suppose, i would rather have someone be a homophobe and open about it... rather than a homophobe that is lying to me. It's nice to know who you are dealing with and where they are coming from.
    But, that's just me.

Well you have a point.... It's nice to know exactly what you're dealing with. But in the end I don't really care either way. A homophobe's a homophobe. I'm not going to give kudos to a bigot just because he admitted he is one.
    ...
Just to set the record straight... I do not agree with racism or biggotry. I have little or no respect for those types of viewpoints or opinions. And YES, it degrades my respect for the person who carries those beliefs.
I'm not saying I approve of racism or biggotry others harbor.. i'm just saying that it is better that the person is at least, honest with me in his/her racist and/or biggoted views. It allows me to process future comments closer to the truth.
For example, the next time someone tries to tell me what a great guy they are and how they care about everyone... I'll know that is not true.
So, it't not a matter of agreeing with the viewpoints or the opinions or the person... it is just appreciating the fact that they are making their racism/biggotry clear to me.... so i can react accordingly.

    ...
I just want to address this specific comment:
"gay's (men and women) are just not the circle of people I hang with or want to hang with and has nothing to do with fear it's a personal choice, are there people you don't have in your circle of friends for what ever reason that has nothing to do with fear ?"
    ...
See... here's the thing... you can't tell if a person is gay, just by looking at them. How well do you know your co-workers.... your circle of friends? You may have friends who have kids that are gay... or siblings that are gay. The reason why you don't know is because your friends and co-workers know your opinions on gays and lesbians and they don't tell you. They may be your friends... but, it does not mean they respect you.
    ...
Here's a story I've told here in the past. It's why I changed my views.
Back in high school, I hung out with a group of friends that I go out surfing with and get high with and cruise for chicks with. One of my friends was this really good looking guy that the chicks really loved. Total, stereotypical blonde haired, blue eyed surfer dude that was also on the gynnastics team, which made him a kick ass surfer. Plus, he was the nicest guy that would help you out without any hesitation. It was great... we probably met more girls on the beaches of Huntington and Newport because of him... not our stoned, ugly, sorry asses.
Anyway, we found out later that he was gay. It kind of made sense to me, years later. Although all the girls were attracted to him, he never really had a girlfriend. We didn't care at the time, we met girls because of him.
But, all of my friends immediately hated him. I was conflicted, being just a dumb kid. He was never anything but nice and kind to me... and i really loved the guy like a brother. I felt like an asshole for abandoning him... so, I decided to still be friends with him. I knew I wasn't gay. And we still did meet a lot of girls... because of him, not me. I never worried that he would try to make a pass at me... we were just friends.
My other friends gave me shit about it, calling me a fag, too. They were worried that he was checking them out... yeah, he's checking out fat, stupid, hairy, ugly ass stoners like them. But, you know what? Fuck those assholes. We were out of high school and I figured out that the only reason why we were friends was because we saw each other everyday.
Of course, like everything... we get involved with our own lives and move on seperate paths. i have no idea what any of those guys are doing these days.
But, I did learn from that. You can't tell who a person is, just by looking at them. But, eventually, they will show their true selves and it's up to you on how you react.
    ...
I'm glad all that shit happened to me at a fairly young age. i believe it has made me more tolerant as an adult. It helped me outgrow ignorance.

It doesn't make me feel better. It makes me sad. But it is what it is, so it's annoying that you have created some faulty idea of what the word homophobe means and then grasping to that as though it somehow makes your beliefs easier to swallow. That is really neither here nor there. I'm not married to the term. If you'd prefer to be called a plain old bigot or hater of gays or intolerant ignoramus, that's fine with me.

  • I was in 7th grade when my 20 year old cousin came out of the closet. Some of my family (the older adults) refused to accept it for a while, while the kids pretty much were okay with it. He played House with my sisters rather than play football. So it wasn't a huge surprise to us kids. But for some reason, it's the adults who couldn't handle the "deviant" lifestyle. They are the ones who are supposedly "smarter" than the kids. Yet completely unaccepting of anyone being different. Says a lot about grown ups in general who don't have experiences with "different" lifestyles when they're young.

And there is that saying that everyone who's even a little bit homophobic has a little bit of gayness inside of them that scares them to shit.

With all the new technology and how it's so much easier to connect with all kinds of people, it becomes more important, imho, to not paint groups/types of people with the same brush. Categorizing people based on a single characteristic is not a good thing. People are very complicated...this forum is an example. Yes you. :) It's something everyone should work on every single day...to not be judgmental, etc. Being tolerant is a very good thing to work on...again, imho.

My question as I was watching the press coverage of this veto is...who's bill was this? Who wrote it. Who co-signed on to it? I want names...specific names...not just "Republicans." Carry on. :)
