    Happy Birthday Neil!

Listening to the "Harvest Moon" album on YouTube and I realized: I need more Neil. I have:

    After the Gold Rush
    Harvest
    Psychedelic Pill
    Greatest His

My dad has Gold Rush and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere on vinyl.

Looking to you Neil experts on some albums I should get on CD. I already plan on getting EKTIN when I have more money. "Harvest Moon" is also on my list.
    Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

    Whoa- yeah! Happy Birthday Neil!

Good start toward a Neil Young collect, Newch91. My suggestions for additions would be:

    "Must Haves":
    After the Gold Rush
    Everybody Knows...
(these first two assuming you want your won copies)
    Zuma
    Rust Never Sleeps
    Ragged Glory

More great Neil albums that are not as popular but excellent anyway (these, for me, are also must haves):
    On The Beach
    Tonight's the Night
    Comes a Time
    Sleeps With Angels
    Mirror Ball
    Broken Arrow
    Year of The Horse
    Living With War

    Others I like a lot:
    American Stars 'n Bars
    Live Rust
    Trans
    Freedom
    Weld
    Harvest Moon
    Silver and Gold
    Americana

And for me, everything else I can get my hands on and afford because they're all at least worth checking out and everything has something good on it.

Let us know what you find. :)

I do own After the Gold Rush myself on CD, along with Harvest Psychedelic Pill. Right now, I definitely plan to get EKTIN and Harvest Moon on CD. I've been hearing great things about Live at Massey Hall. May throw in that one, as well, along with On the Beach.

Pretty much spot on recommendations Brian, although it's always tempting to say "Get them all!" when it comes to Neil.

I'd say On The Beach is a definite must have, it's just a fantastic record. Live At Massey Hall is one of the best live albums you'll hear so it's good to see you've got your eyes on that one.

The one thing I will say about Tonight's The Night - I always recommend it as a must-have, but you need to make sure you're ready for it. It's certainly not something to get if you're really new to Neil, but if you've already got an appreciation and can afford the time to really immerse yourself in it (the music, the history, the backstory etc) it's an unbelievable album.

On the Beach is my favorite NY album and in my top 10 albums any artist all time. The only NY albums I do not enjoy are Everybody's Rockin and Reactor.

60s- His first album is okay and good to hear just to see where it started and his second album is a classic
70s- this material is phenomenal- every album is a must own
80s- I find at least some enjoyment from his other 80's albums that are not Everybody's Rockin and Reactor. You wouldnt miss much if you skipped everything but Freedom and Hawkes and Doves- I love both of them).
90s- Listen to Broken Arrow once and then store it away or return it to the library . The last track is an audience recording and pretty much un-listenable :? The rest is good
2000s- There are a few good scattered songs here and there but no great album released. I would suggest skipping it all and focusing on his other stuff.
2010's- get Le Noise and Psychedelic Pill- great solo album and great Crazy Horse album

Then just buy all his Live stuff and you're set :D

I ranked every NY and Bob Dylan albums about a year ago- I have to find those lists and share them here

I buy just about every used Neil album I find. I've got multiples of:

    Neil Young
    Harvest
    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    After The Gold Rush
    Time Fades Away
    On The Beach
    Tonight's The Night
    Comes A Time
    Decade

...so basically multiples of each of his albums up through Tonight's The Night. Some are in rough shape, but I buy them up for a "rock" and a "stock" copy. I'm sure I've got more than that too, somewhere. It's much harder to find stuff from the 80s (which, coincidentally, is his much less listenable stuff anyway).

I'd say every album up through Comes A Time is an absolute must.

On The Beach the album is fantastic, but the song on it's own outranks the album in comparative terms. Easily one of Neil's best, and one of my all-time favorites. A haunting, slow-burner if there ever was one...

I agree on most of the assessment, with a few tweaks: Ragged Glory was from 1990 I believe. That's a must-have. If you listen to that album in the context of it's being a precursor to much of what Pearl Jam and alternative music would be for the next 10 years, it's really critical.

Also, from 2002, Are You Passionate (while a slightly embarrassing title), is a really underrated album. On the whole, it's a little unbalanced, but there's some good stuff on there.

Ragged Glory is part of my good 90s list . I like everything from the 90s except Broken Arrow, which has it's moments. Too much jamming and not enough creativity for me.

Regarding Are You Passionate, I like a few songs and others I can live without. I will give it another listen within the next few days.

Love what I'm reading! You all rock! Thanks for the recommendations.

I think I narrowed it down to five (tough to do, considering it's Neil and from what all of you have said):

    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    On the Beach
    Harvest Moon
    Live at Massey Hall
Tonight's the Night/Ragged Glory/Rust Never Sleeps (one of those)
    Shows: 6.27.08 Hartford, CT/5.15.10 Hartford, CT/6.18.2011 Hartford, CT (EV Solo)/10.19.13 Brooklyn/10.25.13 Hartford

I think I narrowed it down to five (tough to do, considering it's Neil and from what all of you have said):

    Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
    On the Beach
    Harvest Moon
    Live at Massey Hall
Tonight's the Night/Ragged Glory/Rust Never Sleeps (one of those)

Ragged Glory for sure out of those last 3.

I'm going with Rust Never Sleeps- sorry Vant

Btw I listens to On the Beach again tonight. What the hell is wrong with me haha. I need to listen to happier music

I'm on a Neil Young roll lately because I'm reading Neil Young FAQ and it's being an awesome trip so much to discover. I have to agree with the recomendations that have been given awesome albums.

I've been listening to on the beach and tonight's the night a lot lately I find them both incredibly awesome.

For a starter I would recomend Rust never sleeps over the other two and also Buffalo springfields first album and also CSNY deja vu
    Manchester 1&2 2012

Waiting for the next PJ euro Tour

Hoping not to get drown in the wave of life

I recently ranked all of Neil's albums (except for live stuff and Decade and greatest hits collections) for another site. I'll post it here too...subject to change of course. (Yes I know TFA is from live recordings but it is typically considered a "normal" Neil album because all the songs were previously unreleased.)

I'm going to all 4 shows. I'm hoping he has some new songs to play for us and that he will play some rare old gems as well. As for the latter, these are on my wish list. I've never seen him do any of them in person.

Expecting To Fly (he played this a number of times during the '99 solo tour but not at the show I saw)
    Don't Be Denied
    On The Beach
Tired Eyes (he hasn't played this since 1973)
    Traces
    Stringman
Shots (he played this solo acoustic at the Boarding House in '78 and a Crazy Horse version came out on Re*Ac*Tor)
Someday (he played this last month at a benefit in Los Angeles...first time he's played it since '97 so it is somewhat realistic to think he may play it at Carnegie Hall)
I'm The Ocean (he has never played this solo before)

I'm going to give that album another listen this weekend. I remember it being very loud and muddle sounding, and it just drove me crazy. I could never really focus on the songs themselves because I hated the overall sound of the record. I've only listened to it once in the past 5 years so maybe I will think differently.

This seems like a strange one to release to me. 7 of the songs are already on Live at Massey hall, 3 are on Live at The Riverboat and 2 were on the Sugar Mountain record. Also, where does it fit in the series if it's a 1970 concert?

Volume 00: Sugar Mountain - Live at Canterbury House 1968
Volume 01: Live at the Riverboat 1969
Volume 02: Live at the Fillmore East 1970
Volume 03: Live at Massey Hall 1971

I know Neil has been choosing the Archive shows carefully - and none of the Archives releases have disappointed so far - I'm just surprised that he's releasing a 13 song album collected from recordings of six different shows and there aren't other songs that could have been included instead of repeats.

I'm not really complaining - I'll still buy it and I'm sure it'll be worth it. Like I said none of the Archives have disappointed so far. I guess I'm just impatient to hear want some Archives releases from the mid-70s. :)
The preorders are up for the Cellar Door album:
    http://neilyoung.warnerreprise.com/?eml=2013November26/1063349/6010961

Also, it's listed as Volume 2.5 on the label, so it slots in between the Fillmore and Massey Hall albums
