With Americana coming out in a few weeks and sounding rather promising based on the first two songs we've heard, I thought it was a good time to start a Neil Young thread. I haven't seen one on here.

What's everyone's favorite stuff by Uncle Neil?

Neil is the man as far as I'm concerned... Don't think there are any better.

Looking forward to Americana a lot, and hopeful that he & Crazy Horse will hit the UK/Europe on the tour that seems to be taking shape... Never seen him with CH, but I seriously, seriously need to! :D

Hmm - I'll do a top ten album list too. In no particular order...

    1. Freedom
    2. Mirrorball
    3. On the Beach
    4. Re*Ac*Tor
    5. After the Goldrush
    6. Harvest
    7. Silver & Gold
    8. Zuma
    9. Live Rust
    10. Tonights the Night

*Edited to add essential bootlegs to search out. Not going to get into individual shows, but for sheer quantity I'd recommend the following 2:
    1) A Perfect Echo - 10 CD boot of soundboard quality recordings. Had this set for years, and it is probably my most listened to boot. Great choice of live Neil throughout the years.
    2) Rarities - 5 CD set of unreleased/out of print studio tracks.

"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

Yep - That and Journey Through The Past are (I think) the only 2 albums that were never released on CD from Neil's catalog.

The source of the TFA CD is interesting, in that the source is a HDCD version, which means it was mastered for CD release, but Neil never chose to put it out.

I'd have to add TFA to my top ten too, although I don't want to drop anything. So I'll make it top 11.

Neil headlined my first PJ show in 93(Blind Melon opened)....I bring that show up every opportunity I have :P
Unfortunately, I thought of him as my parents music at the time....liked some of his music, but was more interested in making it to a beer store before they closed than I was in seeing his whole set  (to make matters worse; we never found one in time anyway. f'n BC liquor laws!)

But....I bought Decade around the time Mirrorball came out, and have been a fan ever since. Was disappointed by his very expensive ticket prices on his last tour....but I get to see him at Outside Lands this august, with a lot of other great bands over 3 days, for about the same price as one night with Neil on that last tour. He was the clincher in my decision to travel for that festival.....and now with rumours of a PJ show in SF around that time...I'm hopin I witness sometin special.

When I saw Neil w/ Booker T. & the MG's, Blind Melon and STP were the openers. Blind Melon were so much better than STP.

Just to clarify, I put them in release order. Definitely not in favorite order because Harvest would be much lower.

Love Neil Young - been listening to his music since I was about 16 yrs old... great thread. :D

  • I'm so envious of all those who got to see him in the 90's with those crazy openers! Must have been intense

Got to see Neil back in '09 at Hyde Park with Ben Harper, The Pretenders and Seasick Steve and a cameo from Paul McCartney during A Day in the Life - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6SSR3YY-rc which was one of the best all round days of my life, just hope i get to see him again soon!

After the Gold Rush is probably my favourite album of all time.

2010 - Belfast, London, Berlin, Arras, Werchter
    2012 - Manchester 1+2, Berlin 1+2, Stockholm, Oslo

I've seen Neil 3 times - with Crazy Horse in early 00s, which was a great show. I saw the Greendale show, and we had no idea that's what he was doing, so that wasn't really my favorite. Saw him last year at the Tower by himself and it was awesome. My uncle scored free tixx for all 3 shows. :D:lol:

My top ten albums as of now (I still have to get Time Fades Away, as mentioned above):

    Rust Never Sleeps
    Everybody Knows this is Nowhere
    Mirror Ball
    On the Beach
    After the Gold Rush
    Zuma
    Tonight's the Night
    Le Noise
    Harvest Moon
    Freedom

Also, Wield is awesome, but not original material so I didn't include it in my list.

Time Fades Away is a must. I have it on vinyl and if I put it on, I have to listen to it straight through. It is so awesome. Don't be Denied and Last Dance are my favourites from that one.

Neil young is a master at his craft and not to mention a complete badass. So happy I discovered the greatness of his music (thanks, PJ!). Was fortunate enough to see him live last year in Baltimore and it was a pleasure to be in the audience! Hearing After the Gold Rush on the organ was stunningly beautiful- brought tears to my eyes! His music is just legendary!

Just scored tickets for the Sunday night show at Red Rocks 8-).

I hope they announce NY dates soon! I caught NY by himself but would love to see him with the band as well.
