and so many bands mentioned on here I've never even heard a song of:

    Phish
    Grateful Dead
    Mumford and Sons

and I have to say I'm utterly shocked that anyone would say Soundgarden. And no, them being friends with PJ has nothing to do with it. SG and PJ sound nothing alike, but at the same time, I find it odd that someone could love one and not even like the other.

Alright, since I was one of the folks that listed Soundgarden, I'll ask.... if it's not their association and we all agree they sound nothing alike, why would it be shocking to like one and not the other? What links them anymore than any other two bands from similar times/roots?

absolutely, you make a great point. I honestly can't say. I just don't know many/any people who like one and not the other. It's really nothing more than that.

I hear you, and trust me, intuitively it does just feel like I "should" like them, but I've tried and for whatever reason, it's just not my thing. Admittedly, I'm not a huge music person outside of PJ and if not for them I'd probably listen to music a lot less.

Only one band there I would want to see. Soundgarden would be it for me. Wouldn't want to see them bad enough to sit through the rest of them though.

I'm only now, in my 40's, able to appreciate a handful of Led Zep songs. Perhaps it was overexposure: I grew up in a place where the local rock station played Led Zep 2x/hour (probably still does, since time seems to stand still there), Hendrix every hour, and "Aqualung" at least twice per day. It was hell.

The Yardbirds, though, they were awesome.

I've had a hard time listening to Soundgarden. The problem, for me, is "Black Hole Sun." I hate that song with the fire of a thousand suns. No, it's more than that -- the song quite literally induces nausea in me; it's like fingernails on a blackboard, I have a physical reaction to it. I cringe and cannot turn it off quickly enough. I don't even like thinking about it. I feel about "Black Hole Sun" the same way I feel about Carrot Top and okra. ::shudder::

Given that, I've had to force myself to listen to any other songs by Soundgarden. The few I've heard are pretty good; but Black Hole Sun is a big obstacle in the path of my liking Soundgarden.

    Rush.

agreed on that. I have many friends who are wild about them. Went to a show last year and was pretty underwhelmed.

Foo Fighters and Gaslight Anthem. Way too generic for me. I would rather hate a band than feel indifferent towards them.

I agree 100% about the generic comment. I don't hate either of them but generic is a great way to put it

What are some bands you have given an honest try but for some reason or another don't grab you the way they do other people?
For me the top two are:
    Radiohead and Arcade Fire

Interestingly enough... I love both those bands!! :)

Radiohead is top five for me. Arcade Fire top fifteen let's say. New album is excellent.

great topic. one of the few threads I took that time to read through.

Most of the bands/artists mentioned I really enjoy.

Can't say I've ever listened to Phish.. so i have no opinion there.

Only band I honestly tried to get into was Brad / Stone Gossard but... that music really doesn't do it for me.

I suppose perhaps The Offspring and Green Day sort of fell off the wagon for me too.

I absolutely love both of their first 2-3 albums. After that... downhill. IMHO.

    And Nickelback.... they're just awful.

The Offspring's first 3 albums are all killer no filler. Pretty Fly For A White Guy is about the single biggest disaster of a song in the history of "we used to be punk rock and now we're MTV radio shit" music.

Brad's first 2 albums are great (and the 3rd is almost great), and Stone's "Bayleaf" rocks.
