    another one that seems to be linked to 1066... pretty cool... i'm quite interested in all this names business... doing my family tree over the last year and i have got back to 1730 and the lazy fuckers have never strayed more than 20 miles from my home town... which is handy for grave visits and research stuff right enough... :)

    my Grampa is a McCreadie... he's from Stranraer, but i think his grandparents came from Ayrshire... (Troon i think.. not sure though)!!!!

    On my dad's side (the Italian side!), a cousin spent two years looking into our family. Traced the American Boggiano's way back to the beginning of immigration to the US! Traced the italian side of the family to 1017 (first reference of the name he could find). Got the coat of arms, etc. He did put all of the history together in a book but I don't have a copy (my sister does) and also, it's in Italian!

    sure thing..

    first off, get some paper and draw yourself in a box (or your kids) and then branch off upwards from there... putting your mum and dad into boxes above you on a pedigree chart...

    once you have things like your mum and dad in... and grandparents... then you already have 8 names to work on!!! and guessing by averages then your grandparents were probably born in 1900-1920's... thats you got back 100 years already...

    after this kind of thing (dates are vitally important... i.e. death, birth and marriage) use the dates you have to access:-

    census records (some years are free others are payable)
    church records of that parish they were in.

    places like http://www.rootsweb.com and http://www.ancestry.co.uk are very handy with some payment required... one of the best ones (and free!!!) is http://www.familysearch.org/ which is run by Church of Latter Day Saints and has America in it and everything... and its free!!!

    the census data is brilliant as it normally gives occupation, siblings, their ages, the street they lived in and the house number... :eek:

    get as far back as you can using info from living relatives, colect photos, birth certificates, etc... it can get frustrating at times but then it can also be fantastically exciting... my wife did hers for years and discovered her ancestor was the royal physician to Tsar Nicholas I or somehting... pretty cool!!!
