I finally picked up Americana yesterday and it definitely sounds like NY and Crazy Horse. Highlights upon first listen include Oh Susanna, Clementine and God Save the Queen. Get a Job sounded a bit out of place, but I'll still accept it on the disc. Overall I'm giving it a 7.5/10 based on my initial spin of the disc.

    Clementine just blows me away.

    Really like Susannah, Jesus Chariot.

Can't get into Gallows Pole - maybe just have to get used to it and the idea that it doesn't sound like Led Zep's version. (yeah, I know Robert Plant didn't write it, of course)

God Save the Queen sounds good but also a little ridiculous.

Get a Job - I can't get through it - it really annoys me.

This Land Is Your Land - I don't know - it's not "Crazy Horse"d enough.

I do really enjoy the album despite all my complaints. It's a glorious mess, in the way that so many of Uncle Neil's albums are.

^ I agree with your view on This Land is Your Land, it really isn't Horsed up. And Gallows Pole, too, isn't what I was expecting from this band; I guess Zeppelin really did do it best.

Same as with all the other songs they "covered" 8-)

(Sorry Willie Dixon & Howlin' Wolf - it's the truth.)

The song "On The Beach" is the moodiest shit ever...so fucking good.

Every time Neil sings "I went to the radio interview...," I always interrupt with "tell 'em what happ'ned Neil, tell 'em"...which is followed by my wife in the passenger seat rolling her eyes. Haha.

    Such a great song/album.

My wife rolling her eyes in the passenger seat while Neil plays is a fairly common occurrence.

What's that radio interview line referring to, you know? Yeah that song is fucking awesome.

Hmm...that's a good question. My best effort: I picture this song as the background to the New York City that exists in a Woody Allen movie...the dingy, bustling scenes where Michael Caine is a sex symbol and everyone's depressed and medicated. The album and song was written in the early 70s and so much of what the 70s was grew out of what the 60s failed to be...maybe Neil wrote this as the ambiguous and tortured brooding of someone who hates what the world had become but still harbors that elemental need to be part of it. Every socially conscious person goes through that - you hate the world for the way it is, and instead of doing the logical thing and rejecting it altogether, you still want to change it - and the 70s was probably hyper-saturated with that feeling.

Ok...so maybe I've thought a lot about this song. But that's my best guess.

Check this out: interview with Cameron Crowe in 1975. He's talking about making Zuma and all kinds of shit - good stuff! I guess the appreciation for Tonight's the Night developed over time - neither party seems too fond of it at this point.

    Too Far Gone

    amazing tune...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wm0NhrLFc7Y

    Too Far Gone

When I woke up you were gone
And the sun was on the lawn
    Empty pillow with perfume on
    I smelled it.

Well, we met in my favorite bar
Took a ride in my old car
But I still don't know how
    We made it home.

    Was I too far gone
    Too far gone
    Too far gone
    For you.

We had drugs and we had booze
But we still had something to lose
    And by dawn I wanted
    To marry you.

    With our attitudes by day
And our secret dreams by night
Can we really live our lives
    That way.

    Am I too far gone
    Too far gone
    Too far gone
    For you.

    Was I too far gone
    Too far gone
    Too far gone
    For you.

    On The Beach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKgj1FNToWY

    Ambulance Blues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzkinJC5F78

Back in the old folky days
The air was magic when we played.
    The riverboat was rockin'
    in the rain
    Midnight was the time
    for the raid.

    Oh, Isabela, proud Isabela,
    They tore you down and
    plowed you under.
    You're only real
    with your make-up on
    How could I see you
    and stay too long?

    All along the Navajo Trail,
    Burn-outs stub their toes
    on garbage pails.
    Waitresses are cryin'
    in the rain
    Will their boyfriends
    pass this way again?

    Oh, Mother Goose,
    she's on the skids
    Coz' you ain't happy,
    neither are the kids.
    She needs someone
    that she can scream at
    And I'm such a heel
for makin' her feel so bad.

    I guess I'll call it
    sickness gone
    It's hard to say
    the meaning of this song.
    An ambulance can only
    go so fast
    It's easy to get buried
    in the past
    When you try to make
    a good thing last.

    I saw today
    in the entertainment section
    There's room at the top
    for private detection.
    To Mom and Dad
    this just doesn't matter,
    But it's either that
    or pay off the kidnapper.

So all you critics sit alone
    You're no better than me
    for what you've shown.
    With your stomach pump and
    your hook and ladder dreams
    We could get together
    for some scenes.

    I never knew a man
    could tell so many lies
    He had a different story
    for every set of eyes.
    How can he remember
    who he's talkin' to?
'Cause I know it ain't me,
and I hope it isn't you.

    Well, I'm up in T.O.
    keepin' jive alive,
    And out on the corner
    it's half past five.
    But the subways are empty
    And so are the cafes.

    Except for the Farmer's Market
And I still can hear him say:
    You're all just pissin'
    in the wind
You don't know it but you are.

    And there ain't nothin'
    like a friend
    Who can tell you
    you're just pissin'
    in the wind.

    I never knew a man
    could tell so many lies
    He had a different story
    for every set of eyes
    How can he remember
    who he's talking to?
Cause I know it ain't me,
    and hope it isn't you.

(I think that last paragraph was written with Richard Nixon in mind).

Chrome Dreams is a great album. It's been 'available' online for quite a while now, I can't remember where I found it but it's definitely worth searching for. The version that I have is called the "Rust Edition" and it has had 6 bonus tracks added to it. I think this is the version that's easiest to find online (search for Chrome Dreams Rust and you should find it). Neil's website said in 2010 that Chrome Dreams, Homegrown and Oceanside-Countryside were being prepared for Archives 2.

    From Neil's site:
Made up mostly of songs recorded between September '75- November 1976 at Indigo Studios - Malibu Canyon, CA, the album starts off with an "alternate" version of "Pocahontas." This solo acoustic version is in fact the same take as on "Rust Never Sleeps" (July 1979) --minus the overdubs. "Will To Love"("American stars 'n bars"),"Star 0f Bethlehem"("Decade" October 1977) and "Like A Hurricane" ("stars 'n bars") sound much brighter, though they're all released takes.
Side 1 ends with a studio version of "Too Far Gone." At first it seems as if this is just a "warm-up" version before the tape rolled for the 1989 "Freedom" recording. In fact, the tempo is so similar that this take is only 10 seconds shorter than the released version! Unlike the released version, the sparse arrangement & hung-over performance that shuffles along under the lyrics with Neil reciting each line matter-of-factly, as if just-written.
Side two opens with an alternate version of "Hold Back The Tears," which was apparently recorded around the same date as"Too Far Gone." Unlike the "stars 'n bars" version, this take is considerably slower, and definitely more intense.
"Homegrown" follows, & even though this is the same take as the "stars 'n bars" LP, the mix is noticeably different. The guitars are pushed way up-front and have a "crisp distorted" sound. "Captain Kennedy" ("Hawks & Doves" 0ct. 1980) is next, with the well-known March 31, 1976 Hammersmith Odeon - London, U.K. version of "Stringman" right after. Often bootlegged, but just another famous unreleased song until 1993's "unplugged" album. This song was performed often during the 1976 U.K. tour, but never recorded in a studio (or performed again, until 1993).
An AMAZING example of TEXTBOOK "NEILYOUNG WITH CRAZY HORSE" follows with the STUDIO VERSION of "Sedan Delivery" that makes the "Rust" version sound like an "Old Ways" out-take! This plodding, ragged & LOUD performance would've fit just as well on "Times Square" or "Eldorado" as it does here.
It's a matter of personal opinion, but for me, the next track is the highlight of the album: the "Powderfinger" "studio demo." The stunningly-simple-but-brilliant acoustic performance defines "Neil the storyteller" at his very best. Additionally, this take isn't "better" than the "Rust" version; it simply stands apart as a completely different and, somehow, far-more-desperate & heart-breaking song, absolutely perfect from start to finish.
Even so, it'd be hard to find a better closing track to this set than"Look Out For My Love." Lost in the shuffle of the "Comes A Time" tapestry (October 1978), this haunting wordplay proves to be the perfect summary of the thunder & lightning that came before it.
Had it been released, "Chrome Dreams" might have stood today as one of Neil Young's best records ever. The bar-room characters amidst historical references & passionate love songs creates a magical atmosphere. But like most first drafts, the perception of what's important & what isn't must be left to the artist, and not to the record company bean counters or the whims of the artists' "biggest" fans. As near-perfect as "Chrome Dreams" might seem, it's release would've created un-fillable holes in other near-perfect albums like "American stars 'n bars," "Comes A Time" and "Rust Never Sleeps."
In any event, this "album" of rough sketches stands as a unique historical document, long-lost somewhere in the pages of Neil Young's amazingly-brilliant career; and at the top of the "ESSENTIAL Neil Young tapes" list.
The acoustic version of Powderfinger is fantastic and it's worth getting this album for this alone. Sedan Delivery sounds much better than the version on Rust Never Sleeps and Hold Back The Tears is really cool too.

    The 'bonus' tracks are:

    River Of Pride
    Campaigner
    No One Seems To Know
    Give Me Strength
    Peace Of Mind
    Human Highway

River of Pride is the original version of White Line, recorded in 1975 but not released until Ragged Glory. Campaigner is the full length version with an extra verse. No One Seems To Know is a ballad that Neil once called A Man Needs A Maid part 2. Give Me Strength is from the Homegrown album, Peace Of Mind is an electric version played with the Horse and very different from the version Neil released on Comes A Time.

Yep - Have the rust edition too. Stringman is (to me) the standout track. I get lost in it every time.
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.

I've only listened to the first 5 tracks, and like what I've heard so far. I'll give it a proper listen this weekend.

If you mean every commercially available album, along with stuff like 'Eldorado', 'Chrome Dreams' and 'Times Square', then I have. I'll listen to something of Neil's at least once a week, a few times I've played all of the albums in order from 'Neil Young' to 'Americana' (that takes a while, it's a good job I've got a long commute every day!). There's so much material that he's kept back or can only be found on obscure live bootlegs that I know there's a ton of stuff I haven't heard yet but that's part of the fun.

I've been into Neil since I was a little kid and he's one of a handful of artists that I'm genuinely excited about every new release (mainly because you never know which way he's headed next!)
