  • Bugsy used to eat sticks when he was a puppy.
It was cute at first...but then it got to the point where you couldnt get far on a walk without him picking up and eating a million sticks along the way. Not to mention, we started to find them....later.... after digestion :|
it could probably do some damage. so we just did the whole "no" or "drop it/leave it" thing while on walks and he eventually grew out of it. This could be harder to accomplish if she's doing it while off leash...you dont have as much control over her. If she knows drop it/leave it, i'd try that. maybe keep some kibble in your pocket. give her a piece when she drops it. another alternative would be to give her an acceptable chew toy after you take away the stick. ive seen some kong toys that are shaped like sticks now. maybe one of those would do?

^^^^ exactly. she does it off leash, so it's hard to "control" her. on leash, it wouldn't be a problem but I like her to run and burn off energy. the past few days, I've put her "gentle leader" on....even off leash, it seems to have somewhat of a calming effect....so she's just a little less pyscho

^^^ those probably wouldn't cure her, but I'm sure she'd love to have indoor sticks as well

yah, i can understand that. not quite a good enough substitute.
but from all that ive read over the years
the proper way to stop them from chewing on something undesirable
is to tell them drop it/leave it, then give them something acceptable to chew on instead
then reward her for chewing on the right thing

maybe the treat method would work better then.
tell her drop it...wave a little treat around and then give it to her once the stick is gone
repeat accordingly (use pieces of her dry food, if thats what she eats, or get some of those small training treats so shes not getting a huge milkbone each time)

i know bugsy would do just about anything for food - no matter what it was.
shit, he even ate some raw broccoli the other day

trouble is, if I have a treat anywhere on my person she'll be all over me, trying to get it

Being that an obstruction can cause death.....this is what I'd use. You will only have to nick her a time or two and then there is a warning beep, and that will be enough to keep her from even picking them up. I use one for chasing wild animals like bears and deer.

    So my baby, love-of-my-life Gavin
    IMG_0065.jpg
has a lump removed from his back for testing today. The vet also gave me the option of waiting to see if it changed but I don't think I could have handled that, between the possibility that it could get worse if it was something and the probability that I would have been able to imagine changes and growth in my paranoid state.
Just picked him up from the vet and he's now curled up with his teddy sleeping it off,
bad news is we may have to wait up for a week for the test results to get back
Are hoping that it is just a cyst but really worried
Gavvy could really use everyones good thoughts... please! :D
I don't mean to offend anyone, a lot of what I say should be taken with a grain of salt... that said for most of you I'm a stranger on a computer on the other side of the world, don't give me that sort of power!

sorry to hear this, time to retrain her. Wait untill your feeling better, so she can be on a leash for tranning.

Good vibes going your way, Gavvy!

Various unlost dogs have had lumps removed over the years _ the Late, Great Seamus had a lipoma years ago, and Sailor had four growth excisions in 2011, and Sweet Pea had one. Lipomas, epitheliomas, and I forget what else.

You are in our thoughts, Gavvy!
