    Last night was amazing!!

    Most of what I enjoyed has already been mentioned, but some of it is worth repeating:

    --Liam and Ezra (sp?) Jane were incendiary and set the tone for the evening. That's a tough gig--opening for Eddie, but they succeeded. I think they succeeded in large part because they seemed to be having so much godamn fun themselves. That kind of energy is always infectious.

    --Eddie's swashbuckling entrance left me thinking, "How's he going to top that?"

    He did.

    --I loved the stories and the poem...especially the tale of Eddie talking to the Smut Peddling twelve year olds and letting it slip out that he stole a beginners guitar handbook from a church, "So kids," he lectured, "I guess what I'm saying is align yourself with Satan early on."

    --Eddie played songs from some of my favorite musicians (The Beatles, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Cat Stevens), wore the Police t-shirt, and referenced Devo in the UCSB poem ("...in Montecito where they don't listen to Devo..."; he later acknowledged that that may or may not be true about Montecito, but he needed something to rhyme with Devo.)

    --Singing along with "No More War"...that was sublime.

    As I told my friend, the casual nature of both Liam and Eddie's sets (a lot of bantering with the audience, the sporadic nature of the songs and the space between the songs, and the stage itself) reminded me of being in college in Tacoma circa 1990, hanging out in a friend's basement: half the people are playing instruments, everyone is singing, some are drunk, many are high, and everyone is digging it and each other.

    Eddie helped effect that sense memory, but I must say, you guys who were there generated most of that emotion.

    That somebody was professionally taping Hard Sun from one of the facade balconies....

    I don't want to get too excited or raise false hopes for a DVD, but a boy can dream, can't he?

    An amazing show, really glad I made the trek up from L.A. The theater was so cool, I'm happy I went to this show instead of the Wiltern, which I think will be a little more hectic and not as intimate. I was up in the Mezzanine (last row!), and my only complaint was there was a bald freak who was completely whacked out on drugs screaming for Eddie to play Black Diamond and cursing. He may have been autistic I don't know, but he would not shut the hell up.

    For me, Guaranteed (which Ed nailed I thought), I am Mine, Rise and Hide Your Love Away were the highlights, but Ed's stories were great too, he's such a cool down to earth guy and he's legitimately funny. Liam Finn is ridiculously talented, can't wait to get his CD.
    Change don't come at once, it's a wave, building before it breaks.

    Santa Barbara is a special place for me. I regard her as my pleasant neighbor to the North. She greeted us all with her warm Spring sunshine aside the brilliance that is the Pacific Ocean.
    The Arlington Theater is a restored movie house built in the granduer, reminicent of the old Hollywood style. Walking into the main theater, I think the best way to describe her is... if you've ever been on the 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' ride at Disneyland, that's what it's like. It looks like you are in the open air courtyard of a grand Spanish Villa. We were indoors, but the feel is that of an outdoor venue with the ceiling painted up as the warm Santa Barbarian sky. The side opera boxes are disguised as balcony rooms, where the house piano greets patrons as they settle into their seats. This was where the show opened.
    As the house lights dimmed, a lone piano player played a simple tune... turned to greet the audience and repelled down a rope like a swash buckling pirate and hopped onto the stage. Nice grand entrance, Ed.
    Ed's stage is sparse and open. Amps were not the usual Hi-Watt and Vox boxes you'd expect to see at a Pearl Jam gig, more like the vintage Fender boxes you'd normally see Neil Young set up at his acoustic shows of the 1970s. A stool, 3 guitar stands, a reel-to-reel tape player and an empty Cervesa Corona box with a kick pedal as a bass drum. For reasons beyond my control, I missed several of Ed's pre-set openers during the 2006 tour. This show caught me up, all in one shot.
    'Walking the Cow', 'Throw Your Arms Around Me', 'I Am Mine'... all of the Ed pre-set staples. The crowd, for the most part, was pleasant. There were the usual 'Look at Me' types in the audience, shouting out inaudible requests and other assorted moronic statements, but Ed (and his humour riddled attitude) pretty much got them under control. The set was a nice mix of his pre-set songs, the beautiful songs from the 'Into The Wild' soundtrack and some nice spins on covers, with a couple of Pearl Jam songs tossed into the mix.
    Now, I like big, loud electric rock shows as much as the next guy... but, there is something about one man acoustic shows that are special. I believe it is the fact that you cannot hide behind volume and distortion and the words of the songs ring out from the voice in their simple, scaled down truths. And this show (as with the other acoustic shows) showcased the voice that we all love to hear.
    Being Santa Barbara was special enough... when Ben Harper was 'pulled from the audience' to sing... it made it all the more, an exceptional evening. I had just seen Ben at Tom Morello's little show in Hollywood the night before. I was fortunate enough to see and talk to Ben that night, because at Tom's shows, there isn't an exclusive backstage... the aritsts are milling about the lobby and bar area with the rest of us reg'lur folk. It was really a great surprize to see and hear him pop up here.
    This was my first show of this mini-tour and it turned out to be a wonderful beginning to a week I have been looking forward to for a long, long time. As with other Pearl Jam shows... some my my favorite memories are seeing the faces of those people whom I only see when the band is in town. With my life growing longer, my memory grows shorter and I am sorry to admit that I forget the names. But, I know the faces and the happiness they must feel. That counts for something, right? I especially would like to thank Linda from New Orleans who let my frined upgrade his seat from Row U to Row D, so he could enjoy the show with us. Thank you... that was very kind of you and reminds me of how great fans of Pearl Jam are.
    To everyone that will be enjoying the rest of the tour... have a great time. For those of you who are not able to attend... I wish you were here.

    Ok, look... I really don't think I'm uptight.... if you weren't there, then I think you may not have perspective on what it was like.

    When by yelling and in this case drowning out Ed who was talking to the crowd... making it so surrounding fans can't hear what he's saying....

    Exactly. Especially the scream of "Play something fast!!!" Right before Porch. My ear is still ringing :)

    I'll write more of review when I get back to Philly, but last night's show was amazing. From the preparty - great work Vedhead27 & Soundgrunger, to meeting new friends and catching up with old friends and just being able to see Ed at such an amazing venue.

    It was just such a great experience to see him play whatever he felt like and he looked like he had a ball doing it.

    It made flying out at the crack of dawn and then driving up from LA all worth it. Can't wait for the next two shows.

    Super good show. Ed was on the top of his game. The cigarette tackle of the dude by security in the front row was a gag as the dude was wearing one of those lab coats. So it was kind of like the Obama timed setup, but nobody really got it and it went off as not very funny as most thought it was really somebody bothering Ed from up front. I was 2nd row dead center, thanks to KC!, and saw the whole thing go down.

    I'm looking for a Jill from LA who is a TA at an elementary school. She gave me her number but I F'ed up in saving it into my phone. We were gonna meet up at one of the MSG shows. So, Jill if you're out there, PM me. Not sure if anyone else may know her. She was with her freind Ally who was skinny with short bright pink hair.
