Here are some shots from last night. It was hard to take shots with ushers breathing down your neck, and with a huge headbanger sitting directly in front of you.
ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhh----i'm telling.
So I'll just lie down and wait for the dream Where I'm not ugly and you're lookin' at me
This may sound strange, but the highlight of the night for me was when Liam Finn covered fucking OLD MAN by Neil Young!!!!!! Damn he did that song well...nice normal verse, then stepped on this loud ass distortion pedal for that little riff before the chorus.
Amazing!
Doesnt sound strange at all. One of the greatest songs ever written!
Most of what I enjoyed has already been mentioned, but some of it is worth repeating:
--Liam and Ezra (sp?) Jane were incendiary and set the tone for the evening. That's a tough gig--opening for Eddie, but they succeeded. I think they succeeded in large part because they seemed to be having so much godamn fun themselves. That kind of energy is always infectious.
--Eddie's swashbuckling entrance left me thinking, "How's he going to top that?"
He did.
--I loved the stories and the poem...especially the tale of Eddie talking to the Smut Peddling twelve year olds and letting it slip out that he stole a beginners guitar handbook from a church, "So kids," he lectured, "I guess what I'm saying is align yourself with Satan early on."
--Eddie played songs from some of my favorite musicians (The Beatles, James Taylor, Tom Petty, Cat Stevens), wore the Police t-shirt, and referenced Devo in the UCSB poem ("...in Montecito where they don't listen to Devo..."; he later acknowledged that that may or may not be true about Montecito, but he needed something to rhyme with Devo.)
--Singing along with "No More War"...that was sublime.
As I told my friend, the casual nature of both Liam and Eddie's sets (a lot of bantering with the audience, the sporadic nature of the songs and the space between the songs, and the stage itself) reminded me of being in college in Tacoma circa 1990, hanging out in a friend's basement: half the people are playing instruments, everyone is singing, some are drunk, many are high, and everyone is digging it and each other.
Eddie helped effect that sense memory, but I must say, you guys who were there generated most of that emotion.
Thanks and see ya in L.A.

An amazing show, really glad I made the trek up from L.A. The theater was so cool, I'm happy I went to this show instead of the Wiltern, which I think will be a little more hectic and not as intimate. I was up in the Mezzanine (last row!), and my only complaint was there was a bald freak who was completely whacked out on drugs screaming for Eddie to play Black Diamond and cursing. He may have been autistic I don't know, but he would not shut the hell up.
For me, Guaranteed (which Ed nailed I thought), I am Mine, Rise and Hide Your Love Away were the highlights, but Ed's stories were great too, he's such a cool down to earth guy and he's legitimately funny. Liam Finn is ridiculously talented, can't wait to get his CD.
Change don't come at once, it's a wave, building before it breaks.
Ed had to tell some in the crowd to shut the fuck up (friendly Dave Grohl style voice) and that he wasn't negociating when it came to them being quiet in return for song requests. .
I have to say how much this bugs me.... I was sitting next to a couple of drunker-than-me guys that clearly were fans, as they knew the full catalogue of tunes and were ready to rock out.... but kept yelling SOON FORGET and PATRIOT and generally disrupting the mood of the mezz IMO.
We all have our favorites, but it's just not cool to continue to call out your personal "wishlist" when it was clear that re-writing Ed's setlist wasn't an option.
Enough grumbling.... still at peace with an amazing show even if I had to fly back to MN today and miss out on LA....

waaaaaaaaaaaaaah, stop yelling for songs, waaaaaaaah... everyone has setlists but who cares if you yell for other songs?.... do you need to hear Eddie breathing through his nostrils all the time or what? Lame.

Drunk fool identified! Yeah it was super annoying too.

no, I wasn't there... and I don't yell for songs... I'm just making fun of uptight fans... hahahahaha. if you let stuff like that bother you, you are just as bad as people yelling.... settle down
Santa Barbara is a special place for me. I regard her as my pleasant neighbor to the North. She greeted us all with her warm Spring sunshine aside the brilliance that is the Pacific Ocean.
The Arlington Theater is a restored movie house built in the granduer, reminicent of the old Hollywood style. Walking into the main theater, I think the best way to describe her is... if you've ever been on the 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' ride at Disneyland, that's what it's like. It looks like you are in the open air courtyard of a grand Spanish Villa. We were indoors, but the feel is that of an outdoor venue with the ceiling painted up as the warm Santa Barbarian sky. The side opera boxes are disguised as balcony rooms, where the house piano greets patrons as they settle into their seats. This was where the show opened.
As the house lights dimmed, a lone piano player played a simple tune... turned to greet the audience and repelled down a rope like a swash buckling pirate and hopped onto the stage. Nice grand entrance, Ed.
Ed's stage is sparse and open. Amps were not the usual Hi-Watt and Vox boxes you'd expect to see at a Pearl Jam gig, more like the vintage Fender boxes you'd normally see Neil Young set up at his acoustic shows of the 1970s. A stool, 3 guitar stands, a reel-to-reel tape player and an empty Cervesa Corona box with a kick pedal as a bass drum. For reasons beyond my control, I missed several of Ed's pre-set openers during the 2006 tour. This show caught me up, all in one shot.
'Walking the Cow', 'Throw Your Arms Around Me', 'I Am Mine'... all of the Ed pre-set staples. The crowd, for the most part, was pleasant. There were the usual 'Look at Me' types in the audience, shouting out inaudible requests and other assorted moronic statements, but Ed (and his humour riddled attitude) pretty much got them under control. The set was a nice mix of his pre-set songs, the beautiful songs from the 'Into The Wild' soundtrack and some nice spins on covers, with a couple of Pearl Jam songs tossed into the mix.
Now, I like big, loud electric rock shows as much as the next guy... but, there is something about one man acoustic shows that are special. I believe it is the fact that you cannot hide behind volume and distortion and the words of the songs ring out from the voice in their simple, scaled down truths. And this show (as with the other acoustic shows) showcased the voice that we all love to hear.
Being Santa Barbara was special enough... when Ben Harper was 'pulled from the audience' to sing... it made it all the more, an exceptional evening. I had just seen Ben at Tom Morello's little show in Hollywood the night before. I was fortunate enough to see and talk to Ben that night, because at Tom's shows, there isn't an exclusive backstage... the aritsts are milling about the lobby and bar area with the rest of us reg'lur folk. It was really a great surprize to see and hear him pop up here.
This was my first show of this mini-tour and it turned out to be a wonderful beginning to a week I have been looking forward to for a long, long time. As with other Pearl Jam shows... some my my favorite memories are seeing the faces of those people whom I only see when the band is in town. With my life growing longer, my memory grows shorter and I am sorry to admit that I forget the names. But, I know the faces and the happiness they must feel. That counts for something, right? I especially would like to thank Linda from New Orleans who let my frined upgrade his seat from Row U to Row D, so he could enjoy the show with us. Thank you... that was very kind of you and reminds me of how great fans of Pearl Jam are.
To everyone that will be enjoying the rest of the tour... have a great time. For those of you who are not able to attend... I wish you were here.
peace... love... surf...

Ok, look... I really don't think I'm uptight.... if you weren't there, then I think you may not have perspective on what it was like.
When by yelling and in this case drowning out Ed who was talking to the crowd... making it so surrounding fans can't hear what he's saying....
made the drive back to LAX and sitting in the hotel jacked up on such a good show. Despite the best efforts of idiots around me in the Mezz to yell, cuss excessively, and the worst -- talk when Ed was trying to talk... and just be general buffoons, I had a great time.
PROPS to:
Andrew, Summer, and Kirk for sharing a ticket with this traveling fool from MN who couldn't score his own 10c seats....
Jared and Jason, Chief and Bronco, for living in somewhat peace before the show.
Philly Joe and Nicole -- hope to see you in Camden! Fun to hang out with you tonight.
NukemJoe (sp?) -- thanks for the Stella dude.... travel safe back home and watch the hhiking.
Lydia & Dolly -- great pre-party. Thanks tons for your efforts.
And most of all...
Thanks Ed and friends for giving back again to the best fans in the world. Hope we didn't let you down!
Just signed on. Thanks for the shout out. I still have to let everything sink in from last night but that was amazing. I still can't believe Ed climbed down the rope right next to me. (Had 4th row aisle seats Stone's side thrigh the fan club.)
I'll write more of review when I get back to Philly, but last night's show was amazing. From the preparty - great work Vedhead27 & Soundgrunger, to meeting new friends and catching up with old friends and just being able to see Ed at such an amazing venue.
It was just such a great experience to see him play whatever he felt like and he looked like he had a ball doing it.
It made flying out at the crack of dawn and then driving up from LA all worth it. Can't wait for the next two shows.
Super good show. Ed was on the top of his game. The cigarette tackle of the dude by security in the front row was a gag as the dude was wearing one of those lab coats. So it was kind of like the Obama timed setup, but nobody really got it and it went off as not very funny as most thought it was really somebody bothering Ed from up front. I was 2nd row dead center, thanks to KC!, and saw the whole thing go down.
I'm looking for a Jill from LA who is a TA at an elementary school. She gave me her number but I F'ed up in saving it into my phone. We were gonna meet up at one of the MSG shows. So, Jill if you're out there, PM me. Not sure if anyone else may know her. She was with her freind Ally who was skinny with short bright pink hair.

Just wondering if anybody got to meet Eddie at any point of this show. I read that he said during the show that he met some kids and hung out with them a bit. That's awesome, those kids must've been totally stoked!!
just got back from santa barbara what a show!!!!!! got SECOND ROW CENTER STAGE then met great fans and got a poster signed to my autistic son who 4 and loves music..... took til almost three am but worth it. thanks to the ten club and ed for the show. much love

It seems like EV has been meeting up with fans during the 2 o'clock hour, after he has had a lot of Corona's. Be carefull though, he might try to hit in the arm if you're not carefull.
"Underneath this smile lies everything - all my hopes, anger, pride and shame."
maybe i'm way off base, but ed didn't seem to really mess us any lyrics at all. 25 or 26 songs......i don't recall him drinkin' any wine. i was wondering what that drink was, but he seemed pretty sober. either way i couldn't care less. the show was absolutely amazing.
ed was playing the piano for about 15 to 20 seconds before the lights went down, or anyone noticed. throw your arms around me was played for the fake sky we were sitting under, and a segway to get us into the nature feel so he could play some into the wild songs.
after asking for a cigarette, a labcoat broght him one and that as he smoked he was just playing the part. he's reading the script, and the script simply calls for the singer to smoke a cigarette.
somepoint he stated that he f'd up by doing the most entertaining thing of the night by coming down a rope before he even played a song.....and that he couldn't top that.
my favorite quote was after mentioning how the crowd was boisterous, when he asked who was from sb, then who was born, raised, and still lives in santa barbara......then said he wasn't sure how much those people traveled or even got out of the house, but he thought they should know, the rest of the world doesn't look like this......its a cold, dark scary place outside of sb.... (and then in a little kid mimicky type voice) no wonder you're all so f'n happy.
ed said sb was the best singing so far, but did say night 2 at berkely was close.....another sort of jab at berkely night 1.
oh, and the people who set up dargans, i didn't get a chance to meet you, i don't think, i was the tall guy, black shirt, huge red beard drinking 5 guinesses, that was really a great get together. thanks for putting that all together. it was really the best time i've had before a show. so thanks.
i knew i recognized the lady in the black beret and huge posse.... just couldn't put my finger on it.
"there's no lights by the stairs? oh, they'll be fine..."-ed, 11/4/95 san jose
I just got home around midnight last night from my trip out to SB. My friend Jolene and I had an amazing time. We flew in on Tuesday so we could have a few days of enjoying the beach and doing the tourist thing. SB is a beautiful town, and we did a ton of sightseeing.
We arrived at The Arlington around 4:30 on Thursday and could hear some of the sound check from the back of the building. We talked to other fans and I met some really great people. Ed came out but just waved to us and told us he had to rest before jumping into the tour bus. We had hoped he'd come over but alas, no such luck. We figured we'd try again after the show.
I got to meet some guys from the RM forum and we talked about all the great shows we've attended in the past while standing in line for our tickets. When we were handed that little white envelope we literally jumped for joy as Jolene and I had just scored seats sixth row center.
We preceded to get in line for the venue, where we got to talk to other fans. My goal was to get a poster and a zippo once the doors opened. Security made the gals form a separate line to check purses and that actually got us into the building sooner. I scored both after battling my way through a wall of guys. I can be a tough gal when I need to be.
The Arlington is absolutely beautiful inside. I won't go into detail about that as others have already described it quite well. Our seats were as amazing as we thought. One of my favorite things is heading into a venue for a concert and walking closer and closer to the stage knowing that my seats are right in front of it. Instantly, the show felt much more intimate than it already was when there are only five rows of seats ahead of me.
Liam Finn impressed the hell out me. That kid can play the heck out a drum kit. I'm definitely picking up his new CD.
Ed was amazing. The show has already been described so I won't bother but WOW.... from his grand entrance descending from the balcony by a rope to the last note of Hard Sun... I was in heaven.
After the show, we decided to head around back again to try our luck meeting Ed. I've never bothered to wait after a show before but I don't know, there was something about this particular night that had us both wanting to give it a try. There were about 30 other people waiting when we got back and we made small talk with most everyone. We were all very well behaved and as the night progressed, the crowd didn't seem to dissolve too much. One security guy told a few people that Ed had already left, a few people left at that point but we knew he was trying to thin the crowd. He actually joked with us about it later.
At around 1:30am, Ed did come out but made a bee line for the tour bus with Laura Dern and Ben Harper in tow. A few more people left, and the crowd was down to about 15 of us. A few drunken assholes appeared and we thought they were going to ruin any chance of Ed coming out. One of them stole a girls program but came back later to give it back to her. The other drunk guy was hunkering down behind the rental car Jolene and I had. We told security and he walked around to check it out but the drunk guy then took off. Luckily he didn't do anything to our car.
At this point in the night, my toes were frozen as I'd had the common sense to where open-toe shoes and the guys around me started to feel kind of bad cause they were freezing too. LOL
At 2:30am, Ben and Laura left the tour bus and the driver started the engine. We feared the bus was going to pull away but security came over and told us Ed was coming out. No hugs, no photos, and that he'd autograph one item each. One security guy gave us props for waiting it out.
We all got to speak with Ed briefly, and I had him autograph my program. It was worth the wait. That is the only time I'll ever wait to meet Ed or the band after a show but it was a fun experience. If anyone on here was waiting outside with us, I was the girl standing next to the guy who kept telling everyone his wife was going to kill him for not coming right home. He wasn't really a PJ fan, just an autograph collector. That guy never shut up the whole night so everyone who was there will know who I'm talking about. LOL
All in all, it was a great trip and I'm SO happy we ended up in SB. Pearl Jam fans are the best people in the world, and I love having the chance to get to hang out and talk with each and every one I meet. Good times.

That's cool... it's all good.

Full disclosure, I've called out for "No Way" before (but only once, and never over Ed: )

It seems like EV has been meeting up with fans during the 2 o'clock hour, after he has had a lot of Corona's. Be carefull though, he might try to hit in the arm if you're not carefull.
Yes you're right. I got the story from him.
BTW - I thought you were going to see DirtyFrank tonight.
Yep, that was me. Such an awesome show.
Just back from hanging out and playing pool with some college friends. Bring on LA tomorrow.

ed was playing the piano for about 15 to 20 seconds before the lights went down, or anyone noticed. throw your arms around me was played for the fake sky we were sitting under, and a segway to get us into the nature feel so he could play some into the wild songs.
after asking for a cigarette, a labcoat broght him one and that as he smoked he was just playing the part. he's reading the script, and the script simply calls for the singer to smoke a cigarette.
somepoint he stated that he f'd up by doing the most entertaining thing of the night by coming down a rope before he even played a song.....and that he couldn't top that.
my favorite quote was after mentioning how the crowd was boisterous, when he asked who was from sb, then who was born, raised, and still lives in santa barbara......then said he wasn't sure how much those people traveled or even got out of the house, but he thought they should know, the rest of the world doesn't look like this......its a cold, dark scary place outside of sb.... (and then in a little kid mimicky type voice) no wonder you're all so f'n happy.
ed said sb was the best singing so far, but did say night 2 at berkely was close.....another sort of jab at berkely night 1.
oh, and the people who set up dargans, i didn't get a chance to meet you, i don't think, i was the tall guy, black shirt, huge red beard drinking 5 guinesses, that was really a great get together. thanks for putting that all together. it was really the best time i've had before a show. so thanks.
i knew i recognized the lady in the black beret and huge posse.... just couldn't put my finger on it.
gorgeous song.
good for those who got to hear it live, what a treat.
Good times.
