1. Pearl Jam play rock, what do you espect: all the people not moving, just moving the thumbs to send texts to relay to message boards? Moshing pits have always been in front of the stage
2. so, if you don't like moshing, just stay a little back, out of the moshing pit
3. stop bitching about moshing people. They're more rock than you.

You don't have to mosh to rock! Unfortunately it's been proven that moshing is dangerous and can kill. Who goes to a rock concert to get killed? so the MINORITY can enjoy themselves. We're all as entitled to get close to the action as those feckin eejits. Just If you want to jump around like there's no-one else there, go to the back or the sides where there IS no-one else there.

If you don't know how to really enjoy a rock show without moshing, then you're missing out on a lot. You know, you can dance, jump, move, hug the persons next to you, sing a long, ... It's all possible you know...

You can go crazy as much as you want without moshing. Moshing is not a must at a rock concert - it takes away the enjoyment of many being pushed around, shoved, hit, etc. by a few....

I know that my favourite memory of any concert is the point where I black out from being hit in the head from behind by a combat boot of one of you tools. Did you ever think that people paid $ to watch the band & not to get thrown around. Why don't you just skip the show and go buy the bootleg once its done and start your own personal fight club to knock each other around so the majority of people can watch a concert for once.

I notice this is mostly a North American thing, if you watch bootlegs from SA/Europe the masses are actually jumping along to the music not trying to kick the crap out of each other. Pearl Jam is not a mosh band for the most part except for a few tunes off their first couple albums. Keep the moshing to the metal shows.

well, Smartmen, what about just going out of the moshpit if you don't like it?
PS: I would have avoided the "smartmen", but the "tool" called for it...

I actually think that American's don't mosh to PJ anymore. Europe does tend to which can be pretty rough in you stand in the right place. If you're front row though it's ok, as you have the barrier to hold you in place

i guess its a sign of my age and lack of patience of others that keeps me out of the moshpit these days. I dont like sounding like a geriatric, but at 31, i enjoy standing back and watching from the sides. It dosent detract from the enjoyment i have whlst watching the band. 5 shows this year have seen me all over the place in different venues, and like others i want to be right at the front, and understand the risks involved in doing so, but each to their own. I have no problem with the moshers, as long as they know where to do it.

If you mosh, then enjoy yourselves but be careful with each other, after all we should all be there for the same reasons.

If you are going to mosh around and be an idiot you have a duty to look out for your fellow concert goers and ensure their wellbeing... If you are causing someone distress or pain by hurting them because you want to have a good time, then you shouldn't be at a concert at all. May I suggest you holiday in a war torn country and try complaining when you get shot/hurt - then you'll see what all of us who want to enjoy ourselves in a safe manner are up against.
I have no issue with anyone dancing or enjoying themselves at any gig, but if it impacts on others then you should have due consideration to stop.

I roadie for a friends band, and had to jump in/direct security when things get out of hand... it's not fun for the band to see any of their fans in distress, and I suggest you consider that before you go inadvertantly belting seven bells out shit out of your fellow fans.

Pearl Jam show, I dont want to mosh, I want to watch. Some punk show, I expect to have the shit knocked out of me and I'm expecting to kick the shit out of someone else. Moshing has its time and place. Usually arena shows are bad places for pits just because of the amount of people. Its a lot tougher to go down and get lost in a 'sea' of 45 people

well, since the people moshing can't actually watch the show whilst doing it, why can't they do it at the back so that everyone else actually WATCHING can do so from the best viewpoint.

If there would be signs saying: " be aware, Moshpit!" or.. "You are entering a Moshpit!" you would have had a point...don't get me wrong.. there is nothing against jumping around to the music but not with the intention to injure or annoy other people... if you can't understand that then the 78 in your name is probably refering to your IQ.... ;-)

I'm 100% with you on this.

On the cusp of turning 30, I'd much rather stand back and enjoy a show from a distance. Sure. I'd love to be as up close as the barrier but I've only ever seen one band where you could stand on the barrier and not get crushed. As long as I can see, I'm not fussed for being up close these days.

I've had my fair share of mosh pit related injuries, swollen ankles, bruised lips and legs and 10 years ago, I wouldnt have thought twice about it.

I think it could just be something you grow out of though

Usually the pits in question happen behind me and end up encroaching on mine/others space as most pits are not in the first few rows. Like Pegasus mentioned, if you want to mosh, then go to the back where no one will be bothered with it but since moshing has been around for god knows how long now that ain't gonna happen. This is why I like the Pearl Jam NA setup. seats let people rock out to the music if they want..i see everybody havin a good time dancing/jumping/head banging to the tunes.

Like ediger said if I was at a punk show i would expect a pit as it fits the culture/style of the music but unfortunatly (i do not know you so this is not directed at you) the majority of the violent moshers at the pearl jam shows are the meathead frat boys who came to drink some beers, start a fight ,hear jeremy and leave. and they ruin it for everyone else trying to watch the concert. I don't think I should have to worry about who's about to clock me from behind at a show or have to stand at the back and have a worse view of the show so the minority can have there way when they aren't even paying attention to half of it.

As for the whole moshing and crowd surfing thing, I think it's alright to mosh but i think some consideration is due for others around you. And I don't think theres any point in flailing your arms wildly and pushing people on all sides. However, I do think rock concerts are rock concerts and some leevay should be given to people who wanna 'rock out'. Don't see the harm in it. But can't really stand the people who do it over and over and over again. And there were a few who just keep doing it.

At the end of the day, i think it's all about safety. If you wanna mosh, just take care of those around you. BE considerate. IF someone falls, help them up. If the people around you don't seem to be too happy about you moshing, then tone it down or move to an area where people seem more into the moshing. Different people go to gigs for different reasons and I'm sure if theres a little give and take, it'll be a fantastic eexperience for all.

In REALITY there were signs all over telling us that we CANNOT mosh. In various languages...

At Marseille there were signs on the pillars saying PEARL JAM ask that the audience neither slam nor surf for everyone's safety.

This isn't Minor Threat.
It's Pearl Jam, ie, not given to mosh.
