I wouldnt really call it moshing anyway. People are just close together becasue they fush to the front to try get the best view which seems to happen naturally at the start. Then as ppl move to the music becasue its so cramped no one can control their movements.
now that was what it was in Reading for example..VERY tight and hard to handle..but it's just from many people wanting to be as close as possible.
Paris, and to some extend Barcelona, it was wankers just 'enjoying' themselves by pushing other people around.
not the same thing...it's the attitude behind it...like you can have the best concert on an average setlist..just because the atmosphere is right.
I find it depressing that so many people here defend their right to 'enjoy' themselves at the expense of everyone around them.
I can handle the rough parts...wouldn't have been front row every time otherwise..but it spoils your enjoyment when you have to constantly think about your own safety...
next off to Bologna..not even a ticket yet apart from maybe in the sides...but that'll be interesting to see a gig where I might not be so close (and I bloody love to be able to actually have eye contact with the guys..always have at gigs or theatre shows) but where I don't have to constantly think about how I stand, how I breath, etc... and stupid me is trying to think about people around as well..diving down to fish out someone else's bag for example...thinking back on it I must be crazy because it was soo dangerous..
for 1 show..I'll be back in the pit in no time and will, from my 5'6" (1.65), fend off any idiots trying to force himself into my hard-hearned spot...
just wish that every gig could be like Lisbon, or even Ben Harper @ Hammersmith Apollo...great atmosphere yet roome to move and dance without having to worry.
some of the guys defending moshng should get girlfriends and see how they enjoy the mosh pit..
What i was glad in paris is that i was able to force myself to the front as there was some movement crowd surfing......and what i disn't like in Antwerp, is the fact that people were standing up, drinking their beer while Pearl Jam was playing Hail Hail or Even Flow for example, and i was stuck behind some stupid blocks who didn't feel like jumping up and down....
Reading was a good compromise, and as stated above, people wanted to get to the front, bu there were no means of hurting someone, maybe in paris, some people went to far...but to make my point, i'd rather see people jumping up and down crowdsurfing than just standing up....especailly at a rock concert....
I want to see the bandmembers up close for once in my life..hope to get that chance in berlin, want to experience the energy coming from that stage see the guys having a blast....but my body cannot handle(i have infections in the soft bones in my spine and hand and feet..don't know the english word for it)I am stil able to jump up and down have a good time dance and sing along(ok i'l be honest ...i only can with some help from a certain plant;) ),but i wil break something if someone's boot is in my back because they do not have any consitheration for other peoples welbeing. So even though i would have love to have a chance (not to be dramatic but it is really one of the top things i want to be able to do before ending up in a wheelchair)i think i have to settle with a standing ticket and stay further back...Seat tickets i did that in arnhem....so when i was standing and singing along some girls behind me that stayd glued to their seats were not to happy about that....so that is not something i want either. The two people i am going to berlin with are a lot smaller then me(i am 1.80)so not much they can do to assist if something goes wrong. So what some of you are really saing is that i should settle for less because you where never tought to keep other peoples safety as something important.Because even when your not having medical problems ...the way i see some of you act even the strongest pj fan would get injured.
edit i obviously am refering to some people here that say it's ok to kick a girl or something like that...not to al the people here that look out for other peoples welbeing...you are one of the reasons i love pj so much...the feeling of loving the music together adds al lot to a show i think.
I love how ppl think thse shows have been rough. Go to a heavy metal gig and see what moshing is really all about. This doesnt even come close to the kaos seen in those pits.
See if I were into moshing I WOULD go to a heavy metal gig  . I'm NOT so I won't. And as for your other post referring to the natural movement towards the front, that's not moshing. I really don't think you, in all your mosh wisdom, actually know what moshing is. That movement towards the front is normal in ANY concert and I love the feeling when the whole crowd is making you jump with them without you even having to do anything. I think that's a laugh. You CANNOT go throwing yourself around in a big group of people however or running into people for 'the fun of it' cos, simply put, it's fucking dangerous, immature and stupid

the genre of music doesn't matter... you can just as easily mosh at a prodigy gig... people who mosh don't even listen to the fucking music anyway 'cos they are too busy kicking the shit out of each other.
Moshing is not enjoyment... moshing is moronic.

Yeah I'm sure you internet hard cunt. You cant even handle a rock concert. Come to Australia where is all seating you little girl. Don't go to the front if u cant handle it, its so simple.
nah i've been to oz and once was enough. preferred NZ.
oh and im no internet "hard cunt", all i'm saying is that if you ever moshed into me at a gig, i would force you to stop...politely or otherwise.
I agree - moshing is great, i love mapping out the networks of bruises the following day-love the look of panic in some people faces when they realise they cant handle the immense pressure of losing their stance and being flung 10feet in the other direction only to get sucked back again and the breath squashed out of them - crowdsurfing is also excellent especially when some fat fuck lands on the back of your head and knocks you to the the ground while a gang of oblivious moronic moshers trample on you while youre down.
Yeah its great I highly reccomend it.
Moshers=fuckin spanners.

I expect respect. That's what I expect being in a place in which I have the same right to be as anyone else.
you're so called "freedom to do whatever I want cuz it's a rock'n'roll concert and I'm a hard rocker" ends where my freedom to do whatever I want starts.. and so on, and so on.
there's not a moshing pit so you'll have to take it to a place where you won't bother anyone else.
I don't care how you choose to enjoy the show as long as you don't prevent me to enjoy it as well.
U guys did get the sarcasm in my post didnt ye ... damn the irish humour anyway.

Pearl Jam doesn't make "moshing" music anyway. If you wanna mosh to Pearl Jam you're kinda lame. Go to a hardcore show or something. That's where moshing takes place. The so-called moshing at Pearl Jam (or crap like Slipknot or Family Values tour for that matter) is just a bunch or retards running into each other to see who's the bigger tough guy. Moshing isn't about running into people that are standing there minding their own business. That lameness.
But Christ, some Pearl Jam fans are such pussies. If you go to any show with the floor being GA, expect to be pushed around a bit. Like the one dude said, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen. Don't cry about a little shoving around. If I'm at a show and I don't feel like being around some ruckusness, I get the fuck away from it. Like another dude said, up front is where that shit happens, want to stand there and observe, do it at a seat from the sides.
Pearl Jam have songs that there will always be moshing at! They have many songs that dont. I was at Dublin and Leeds and about 5 or 6 rows back each time. Yes its a bit cramped, and a bit of swaying due to people jumping up and down singing. YOU EXPECT THIS - YOU ARE AT THE FRONT.
It is not really moshing and certainly nor hardcore dancing. I had no complaints at either concert, and certainly am prepared to deal with it. If not stand back a few rows further - your realistically only gonna be a metre or two further away.
The people at concerts who do piss me off though - are the dicks that form chain lines and proceed to walk (or push!) their way through holding on to each other and knock several people flying. An excuse me here and there would be great. They are the true wankers.
And a bit of crowd surfing is ok too. I personally dont do it, but people are free to express themselves however they desire at concerts.
Thats the beauty of a PJ show - so many different types of music fans all there for the same reason - a love of Pearl Jam (Im pretty sure PJ dont get many casual fans nowadays, unless you count those who didnt bu/listen to the albums since Vitalogy) and thats the way I like it!
Do fans of PJ still mosh in the Americas? Or is this just a European GA thing?
I know moshing happens at metal shows (and PJ is NOT metal), but I didn't see any moshing in Denver nor at either Gorge shows. Was there any moshing at any of the GA SF shows?
people arent moaning about being banged into and whatnot, thats expected (i was in the the 2nd row at leeds for fecks sake) BUT that is not related to objections about moshing
tightly packed crowd having fun= fine
moshing= shite
No, moshing went out of style more than 10 years ago. Plus, in the NA venues the floor will have assigned seating with folding chairs.
I can't believe people here would defend their right to be complete pricks at the exspense of someone else'slivelihood. People go to the shows to enjoy the music not be run over by immature assholes.
EDIT- "tightly packed crowd having fun= fine"
I was run into a few times on the lawn at the Gorge, that's fine, I know incidental contact is inevitable, if you're bouncin' around having fun eventually you're going to bump into someone-- and the people who did so were aplogetic.
But Christ, some Pearl Jam fans are such pussies. If you go to any show with the floor being GA, expect to be pushed around a bit. I'm not talking about a little shoving. I'm talking about people climbing up my back, using elbows to push me back so they can get in front of me. Of having to leave because I was afraid to fall down and get trampled. Of choosing between havign a physical fight with someone to prevent them from pushing me down or back.
What gives you the right to push yourself into my spot that I waited 10 hours to get? Why do I have to move? Why don't I have the right to stay right where I am? I dance, I jump, I sing. I would have like to have done it from the front of the venue.
You cannot observe very much from the back of the venue - just listen which is what I had to do.
