For me, and I haven't listened to the new album, but every other Radiohead album was given the same respect and once I see the material live it changes everything because of the presentation.
The live show makes all their albums to be brilliant.

I think this album won't get as many accolades as their previous ones, but I think it deserves them.
"Bloom" is such a weird opener that it took me by surprise on first listen. I had to stop the album after the first time I played this song and start it over again. It's definitely a "headphones" song; there's lots of layers to try to wrap your head around. It's one of their most experimental tracks that I've heard, and they have some, er, cajones opening the album with it. They clearly don't care much that people might be turned off by the first song, they're just putting themselves out there. I dig it.
"Morning Mr. Magpie" is a lot different than the acoustic versions that the band flirted with previously. It's got an incessant groove that makes you want to get up and dance. At the same time, there's a lot of atmosphere in this song to match its cryptic lyrics, it's almost like a mixture of "Where I End and You Begin" and "Harrowdown Hill" off of Thom's solo record.
"Little by Little" is not an Oasis cover, thank God (one of their worst tunes). It starts off with some really cut-up guitar before becoming a groovy electronic song. The chorus is actually pretty damn catchy. The bass-work on this record really needs to be commended, excellent job. Groovy stuff.
"Feral" is a dense electronic instrumental, and I could see this being the breaking point for some who may not have chosen to listen to the rest of the record. After a couple of plays, I think it's a really effective mood piece. I've seen someone make the complaint that an eight-song album has no room for an instrumental but it really fits in with the tone of the record. Don't let the sampled vocals fool you, there's no real lyrics to this one.
"Lotus Flower" is carried throughout by a very simple but effective drumbeat. Thom's vocals on this are great - fragile and seductive. Love the bass in this thing.
"Codex" is a pretty devastating piano piece, reminiscent of "Pyramid Song." Love the decision to include trumpet on this - it was the perfect touch. Every Radiohead album needs its heartbreaker and this is it. Could eventually be regarded as one of their best.
"Give Up the Ghost" has - holy shit - clean acoustic guitar! I love the way they structured this - it's built entirely on Thom's vocal, as they add layer upon layer until it seems that there's an entire chorus of Thom Yorke's singing together. This one has a bit of a bittersweet tone to it.
"Separator" is my favorite song on this record. The transition from "Give Up the Ghost" into this one is a little jarring, but I love the band's decision to end with this. Puts a positive spin on the tone of the album. It already contains one of my favorite Thom vocals, and this seriously might be the band's most upbeat song in a while (at least musically - I need to figure out the lyrics for pretty much this entire record). Love the repeated line "if you think this is over/then you're wrong" near the song's end. Maybe it's referring to more things to come?

Great review - I agree, it is the bass and the vocals which stand out for me most on this record. I think it is the bass work which has made me keep going into 'jazz' mode when listening. It is like listening to a prominent improvised bass at a live show for me

god i wish this was at least 2 songs longer... its been years since "in rainbows"... they have to have more to give us... i like whats there tho... "give up the ghost" is probably my favorite... wish there was a heavier one on there
i don't think i like it quite as much as i did "in rainbows" initially... but maybe it'll grow on me
This is Radiohead they are always going to piss someone off with their decision to release what they want and not what shifts units, they aren't Coldplay or U2 and thank fuck they aren't. I'm on my 2nd listen as I type and it's already sounding more intoxicating than the 1st, Morning MrMagpie has such a groove to it and Little By Little is already emerging as a favourite. Lotus Flower I amediately liked and Codex & Give Up The Ghost is another heartbrealker from the band, with a cracking closer in the shape of Seperator2.
I admit when Kid A appeared in 2000 I was a little taken back, OK Computer had totally blown my mind having followed up a storming rock album with just a work of sheer genius. It took a few listens but it wasn't long before I fell under it's spell. Amenesiac was actually easier to get into after living with Kid A for a number of months, for me a more than suitable accompanyment to it's predecessor. Pyramid Song, Knives Out, Dollars and Cents and the beguling closer Life in a Glasshouse. Hail was the album when I though RH had well and truly lost it, some tracks wowed me There There has to be one of my all time fav tracks of theirs up there with Paranoid Android but it was some while before I settled into the album and other tracks started to get under my skin.
In Rainbows was another grower and so it will be for Tree of Limbs but it's already sounding better on a 2nd listen, if you want the old Radiohead then I suggest you listen to those records but if love this band because they never deliver what is expected then I'm sure you'll enjoy this new album, I know I do.
Kid A is a landmark album, and it was the first Radiohead album that hit me as pure genius. I can see why people may not like it (I love guitars as much as anyone) but it's insulting to tell me that I "tried" to like it because it was critically acclaimed or some shit like that. I had no idea it was critically acclaimed - I just thought it was fucking awesome.
If you don't like it, so be it. But don't try to paint us Kid A lovers as some form of Radiohead sheep. Just say "I don't like it" without going the extra mile of insulting everyone who does.

One thing this album does is that it leaves me wanting more. That's pretty much true of any good record.
I have a feeling that Radiohead are going to release something pretty quick after this. I read on a message board that Radiohead are apparently not touring behind this but are instead recording more material (don't know how reliable the source is, so don't treat that as a fact). Some people think they're going to release a second disc or something tomorrow, which is probably just wishful thinking.

Some random ass dudes getting into an argument...don't know why people took it seriously.
Damn. I've seen mixed reviews. I didn't love In Rainbows; I have to admit it (Reckoner destroys me though). I do, however, love Kid A and Amnesiac. I feel that they are simply masterful albums that seem to say "fuck singles, fuck what anybody else thinks, this is what we are doing right now." They both follow OK Computer for me, of course, which is a flawless album. OK and Kid A told stories, there was a narrative. Amnesiac was more of a collection of offshoots, but it created an amazing mood; and I love the songs, simply put. Hail to the Thief wasn't as cohesive an album to me, although tit had some amazing songs. It feels like Riot Act to me: some great songs, but the album could benefit from shortening it a bit by 2 tracks; 3 or 4 for Riot Act.
Anyway, I don't care about "only" 8 songs, or the 37 minutes. I simply want a cohesive album that has some type of narrative. This is what I expect from one of the best bands of my generation (and all time? are they in that conversation?).

after 2 straight through listens i think it's absolutely incredible as usual. sure it is very different than in rainbows even though it has elements of it, but it is all just proof that radiohead constantly experiments and keeps their style evolving and blending. this album honestly just completely paints another world in my mind. the music is soo atmospheric, deep, and trippy. there are lots of sparkles of jazz with tripped out soul vocals in thom's classic falsetto. if you don't like this radiohead album because you had different expectations than shame on you. each one of their albums is totally different from the next and all amazing, just like pj. like someone else said...this album is steps ahead of most of its listeners. I think this album won't get as many accolades as their previous ones, but I think it deserves them.

I'm loving this album, just like IR each listen seems to intice me more, I've only heard it on the headphones so far but intend a full blown speaker experience very soon, I'm so tempted to hear it again, yes it does make you want more but listening to it again will no doubt yield more gems.
I think it is ridiculous to expect them to return to their older glories and the opinions that are saying that Johnny is seriously lacking in presence, bollocks Radiohead have always been so good because they work as a unit and this album is showing that, if you want guitar presence like the old RH listen to Muse.
I'm sure when they play live again Johnny will crank up that fabulous sound but for now Radiohead in the studio are not about that. Some will be underwhelmed but RH for me at least have that way of just moving me in ways other bands just can't and no other mainstream band challenge the expected like they do. I remember Courtney Love getting so angry when Kid A dropped and claimed that RH should have bought about a revolution after astounding the world with OK, did she expect more of the same? she clearly didn't get this band, from the beginning they've always been evolving and I hope they never stop, yeah Tree of Limbs is another cracker from Oxford's finest!

something about this album as it stands now just doesn't seem complete to me
and it strikes me as weird that there isn't an official tracklist on the order website

Great review - I agree, it is the bass and the vocals which stand out for me most on this record. I think it is the bass work which has made me keep going into 'jazz' mode when listening. It is like listening to a prominent improvised bass at a live show for me
Send my credentials to the house of detention
i don't think i like it quite as much as i did "in rainbows" initially... but maybe it'll grow on me

EV Solo: 7/11/11 11/12/12 11/13/12
Just had my 4th listen to the album, and each time it gets better and better
Somehow I think this is going to turn into a meme.
Edit: And here's an awesome gif of Thom: http://29.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lgt8o ... o1_500.gif
If you don't like it, so be it. But don't try to paint us Kid A lovers as some form of Radiohead sheep. Just say "I don't like it" without going the extra mile of insulting everyone who does.

Now the new Bright Eyes....that's a different ballgame.
source please
Looking forward to getting the album

I can't agree more. Listener's ears aren't quite ready for this yet. Radiohead always seem to be ten steps ahead of everyone else, and this is no exception.

The reference code in the confirmation emails was 'TKOL1'. Why the '1'?
The last track is called Separator. Hmmmm.
Separator itself contains the lyrics "if you think this is over, then you're wrong"
The release date was brought forward by a day. Could part 2 be made available today, possibly?
It's a pretty short album by Radiohead standards - especially given that it's been 4 years since In Rainbows.
Probably means nothing....we'll see...

I remember Courtney Love getting so angry when Kid A dropped and claimed that RH should have bought about a revolution after astounding the world with OK, did she expect more of the same? she clearly didn't get this band, from the beginning they've always been evolving and I hope they never stop, yeah Tree of Limbs is another cracker from Oxford's finest!
something about this album as it stands now just doesn't seem complete to me
and it strikes me as weird that there isn't an official tracklist on the order website

i'm with you on this one. new bright eyes is incredible. i can't stop listening to it. my ipod tells me i've played it entirely 38 times already. and that doesn't include all the times i've listened to the vinyl so far. great album.
