I read It in the summer of 96 when I was 14 and it scared the ever living shit out of me. I remember seeing the mini series first and thinking it was lame so I figured I would read the book. Holy Shit. I haven't read it since but it definately freaked me out. I also liked what he did with Desperation and the Regulators with the same character names in different settings. Very cool. A few of his short stories stuck with me like the Sun Dog. The kid gets a polariod camera for a present and every picture he takes is a dog in a yard. Each subsequent pic the dog gets closer and closer, filling up the picture until it finally gets out of the picture and goes on a killing spree. I think it's in Four Past Midnight. Survivors Tale about the doctor stranded on a deserted island who cuts his own body parts off to eat in order to survive. King is one of a kind. Great stuff.

I read a few months ago that the Stephens Spielburg and King had agreed to work on it and it would be on HBO.

Actually if you google some of that you will find a whole lot of speculation.

different seasons was by far my favorite
the dead zone, carrie, cujo, christine, and pet semetary were also good.

I stopped reading king books when IT came out. No reason, just got tired of his prose.

Funny you should mention 'survivor type'. It was always the short story that stuck in my mind, maybe because it reminds me of 'Tremor Christ's first verse...wounded is the organ he left bloodied on the shore.

Why was Pet Sematary spelled with an S. Was there a reason?

Different Seasons is really great and Four Past Midnight has The Langoliers - ew, so creepy. I read that just before I had to fly somewhere. Big mistake.

Carrie and 'Salems Lot (why does it have the apostrophe?) and Under the Dome are my other favorites and I still have to read Insomnia.

    hmm short stories...

The Mist was good. Also Night Flier. I thought that The Mist was done very well as a movie until the ending.

    Chattering Teeth

    The Moving Finger

    Autopsy Room Floor

    Battleground

and the one with the terrifying bat-people that only certain people could see and if they knew you could see their true faces they would kill/eat you. forgot the name of that one. edit: Here it is "The Ten O Clock People http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ten_O%27Clock_People

'Salems Lot has the apostrophe because the towns full name in the book is Jerusalem's Lot. Still wondering why Sematary is spelled with an S

I read 15-20 King books when I was in High School. Haven't read any for about 20 years. But my memory had my favorites in this order.

    It
    Pet Semetery
    Misery
    The Tommyknockers

    Oh yeah forgot to add:

    The Long Walk
    The Dark Half

    and Thinner

    The Long Walk!!!

    The Wolves of Calla

    The Talisman

    The Black House

    Salems Lot

The Long Walk is easily one of my favorites, and I am surprised anytime I see anyone else give it credit. It looks like I may finally get my wish of a movie...

    http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mist/ne ... _long_walk

The article is from a few years back, but they mention Darabont had to do Farenheit 451 before he got around to it. His adaptations of Shawshank, Green Mile, and The Mist have easily been 3 of the best King movies ever made, and I am excited to see what he can do with The Long Walk. I'm not sure how much they may have to change (age of the walkers?) to make it something that wouldn't scare off main stream audiences, but I would hope he would stay as faithful to the book as he did the others.

Because the cemetary was built by children. They misspelled the word.

The ten o'clock people was a great read, so was the long walk. One of my favourite short stories was Dolan's Cadillac and also You know they got a hell of a band. What does everyone think of the Pearl Jam reference in Dreamcatcher?

The reference to PJ in 'Dreamcatcher' is chapter 10 parts 4 and 5; the 'squad anthem' is pearl jam (pt 4), and in pt 5 '...instead of pearl jam or Jar of Flies or Rage Against The Machine...'. Also Pt 5 '...they knew Eddie Vedder; Walter Cronkite was a different deal...'

Can I say though......that without a doubt the WORST Steven King book is Gerald's Game? Such a shocker....really.

    Insomnia
    The Stand
    Dark Tower Series
    Talisman/Black House

Also, if you haven't checked out the graphic novel/comics for Dark Tower and the Stand, you should. The artwork alone is amazing. The Dark Tower starts off true to the story (the Roland/Susan backstory) and takes off from there filling in. The Stand is more of a literal translation of the book, but very enjoyable thus far in the series. There is a Talisman one too, but I haven't gotten that into it yet.

Count me as someone who was very disappointed in Under the Dome. First 3/4 were spectacular, classic King. But the ending... without spoiling/getting into a discussion of it, I'll just say that I thought it sucked.

Just as I finished writing this, Pet Sematary by the Ramones came on the ipod... coincidence?
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
