  • I know it's not strictly speaking a book but more a collection of random short stories published over a while, but Everythings Eventual. Some of the stories in there Like All That You Love Will Be Carried Away, Riding the Bullet and Luckey Quarter are quite well written. That and the book It. Absolute Gold.

    Many choices, but
The Shining actually made me scream aloud.
Only two books have ever made me do that, the other was Poe's the black cat.

    The Stand
    The Shining
    The Dead Zone
    The Dark Tower Series
    Pet Semetary

Pet Semetary affected me the most. When I read it, I was just getting into King. I hadn't seen the stupid movie so I was blind going in. But my son was only two at the time that I read the book. Well, if you've read it, you can imagine the impact that story has. I couldn't shake those images for awhile.

Out of all the lame King movie adaptations, that is the one that deserves a remake the most. If you go back and read that story and pretend you don't know anything about it, it is pretty terrifying and truly disturbing. No wonder he put it away in a drawer after finishing it and refused to publish it for awhile. Pretty fucked up stuff.

It is more old school King, where the town is sort of the main character instead of any one person. I liked it.

I couldn't quite decide which 'apocolyptic' one to choose, so I went with The Dead Zone, only because I first read it when I was younger. The Stand I only read two years ago (complete & uncut), without ever watching the mini-series. Cell revists the same themes, From a Buick 8, Needful things, Insomnia, Duma Key etc do also.
Is Under the Dome as good as everyone rates it?

yes, I really liked Under the Dome.... A LOT.

It is so long, but its such an easy read. There is almost no "down time"... very smooth story and it is going to make a GREAT mini-series on HBO.

The only King fans I have seen who are disappointed are the ones that want the insane amount of character development and profiling we saw in The Stand. In UTD, the story just takes off and the characters are filled in as you go along for the ride.
  • Many to choose from for sure

Cant believe I haven't seen this one up more in the thread

    1 Salem's Lot
    2 Green Mile
    3 Misery
    4 Christine
    5 The Shining
For every tool they lend us, a loss of independence

I read It in the summer of 96 when I was 14 and it scared the ever living shit out of me. I remember seeing the mini series first and thinking it was lame so I figured I would read the book. Holy Shit. I haven't read it since but it definately freaked me out. I also liked what he did with Desperation and the Regulators with the same character names in different settings. Very cool. A few of his short stories stuck with me like the Sun Dog. The kid gets a polariod camera for a present and every picture he takes is a dog in a yard. Each subsequent pic the dog gets closer and closer, filling up the picture until it finally gets out of the picture and goes on a killing spree. I think it's in Four Past Midnight. Survivors Tale about the doctor stranded on a deserted island who cuts his own body parts off to eat in order to survive. King is one of a kind. Great stuff.
He who forgets will be destined to remember.

I read a few months ago that the Stephens Spielburg and King had agreed to work on it and it would be on HBO.

Actually if you google some of that you will find a whole lot of speculation.

different seasons was by far my favorite
the dead zone, carrie, cujo, christine, and pet semetary were also good.

I stopped reading king books when IT came out. No reason, just got tired of his prose.

Funny you should mention 'survivor type'. It was always the short story that stuck in my mind, maybe because it reminds me of 'Tremor Christ's first verse...wounded is the organ he left bloodied on the shore.

Why was Pet Sematary spelled with an S. Was there a reason?

Different Seasons is really great and Four Past Midnight has The Langoliers - ew, so creepy. I read that just before I had to fly somewhere. Big mistake.

Carrie and 'Salems Lot (why does it have the apostrophe?) and Under the Dome are my other favorites and I still have to read Insomnia.

    hmm short stories...

The Mist was good. Also Night Flier. I thought that The Mist was done very well as a movie until the ending.

    Chattering Teeth

    The Moving Finger

    Autopsy Room Floor

    Battleground

and the one with the terrifying bat-people that only certain people could see and if they knew you could see their true faces they would kill/eat you. forgot the name of that one. edit: Here it is "The Ten O Clock People http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ten_O%27Clock_People

'Salems Lot has the apostrophe because the towns full name in the book is Jerusalem's Lot. Still wondering why Sematary is spelled with an S
