    Beating victim faces charges in Manitoba

    HEATH Proden's troubles won't be left behind in Australia when he returns to Manitoba in May.

    Proden, the 35-year-old paraplegic who was viciously beaten earlier this week in Sydney, Australia by two teens while he waited for a late-night train, faces charges of uttering threats and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle for what his mother, Shellan Proden, said was an incident of road rage.

    "Yes, he uttered a threat," Shellan Proden said Friday afternoon from her Winnipeg Beach area home. "He's not perfect and I never claimed he was perfect but that has nothing to do with what happened to him (in Australia)."

    According to court records, Proden was involved in an incident on the night of Nov. 7 -- four days before he left for Australia -- where he's accused of ramming a small car from behind with his van on McPhillips Street.

    RCMP said Proden obviously hasn't appeared in court on his three previous court dates in January and February but police are not concerned.

    "We knew from the outset that (Proden) was going to Australia," RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said. "His lawyer appeared on his behalf. His being in Australia now is not a concern. He has strong ties to the community."

    Proden's next court date is May 21 in Selkirk, two weeks after his scheduled return from Australia, when he is expected to enter a plea to the charges.

    Proden's senseless beating made headlines far and wide, but the Sydney Morning Herald also reported that one of the accused's sisters claimed the attackers had been provoked by the Canadian in the wheel chair.

    ''[The police] didn't show the bit of the video recording where he punched my brother in the face twice before that happened,'' she was quoted as saying in the Australian newspaper. ''He's a really good bloke, he does anything his family tells him, this is something he wouldn't do.''

    However, Sydney police have said they believe the attack was unprovoked.
